Ariel and her fishy friends are about to become part of your (real) world.
ABC is planning The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live!, which is described as a “live action/animation hybrid television experience.” The event is slated for the fall.
A release for the two-hour event says it will “intertwine” Disney’s animated take on the Hans Christian Andersen classic with live musical performances “via cutting-edge technology.” (Did anyone else’s mind just flash to those Disney nights on Dancing With the Stars?)
Celebrity performers will be announced at a later time.
Look for the sardine to begin the beguine on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
A live musical adaptation of The Little Mermaid, featuring the movie’s Academy Award-winning songs by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, ran on Broadway from 2008 to 2009.
Are you looking forward to seeing if, indeed, each little clam here knows how to jam here? Sound off in the comments!
Yes!
Under The Sea. Darling it’s better down where it wetter….
Why don’t they bring back the wonderful world of disney and rerun all the old specials
That would be nice. But no, why do something that makes sense?
That would awesome! The ones that were on in the 90s/00s were really good (I’m biased because that was appointment viewing for my little kid self but still).
I’m so excited for this!!!
They should try to get Tituss Burgess to reprise the role he played on Broadway,Sebastian. His performance of Kiss the Girl is just divine.
Omg yes
is to early to ask for Matt Bomer for Prince Eric??
He would be awesome! But maybe a bit too old for that role now.
They’d have to cast the right woman for Ariel to get Bomer (which would be awesome)
He’s not too old for me. Cast Ariel a bit older maybe and it’d be fine. The man is gorgeous and pretty much a real-life Prince Eric doppleganger. Plus he can sing too. Never saw the broadway musical, so I don’t know if Eric sings in it, but I’d never pass up an opportunity to hear Matt Bomer sing again.
That’s awesome! ABC should also do the Frozen musical live while the show is still popular with kids..it’ll be ratings gold!
Considering how long Little Mermaid has been a hit with the kiddies, I don’t think Frozen is any danger of “cooling off” any time soon.

I don’t think they can. They won’t cannibalize themselves. It’s going to be on Broadway (I think) next season – maybe opening in 2018?? They won’t touch Frozen on TV until then.
Yes Frozen is slated to open on Broadway in 2018.
Thers a Frozen holiday special on tv on abc this Christmas and OUAT did a Frozen arc
Oooooooo!
I’m thrilled that all of these musicals are coming to TV, but I sincerely hope that the networks give them the treatment they deserve. We don’t need more Rocky Horror train wrecks. If they’re well done, this is a great new outlet for the theater!
Interesting. I’ll be tuning in.
Melissa Benoist for Ariel, please.
