The Gilded Age has earned an early vote of confidence from HBO.
The cabler on Monday announced that it has ordered a second season of Julian Fellowes’ period drama. The renewal comes just three episodes into the series’ inaugural season. Episode 4 of the nine-episode season airs tonight.
“Julian and the entire Gilded Age family have thoroughly captivated us with their tale of late 19th century New York City extravagance,” declared Francesca Orsi, EVP of HBO Programming, in a statement. “Along with our partners at Universal Television, we couldn’t be prouder to embark on a season two journey with this extraordinarily talented team.”
Added Erin Underhill, President of Universal Television: “The first season of The Gilded Age is the beginning of an epic story that introduced a fascinating world full of intriguing characters. The scope of Julian’s vision is ambitious, and we’re thrilled to continue to explore the depths of this fascinating era with HBO.”
The cast includes Carrie Coon, Morgan Spector, Louisa Jacobson, Denée Benton, Taissa Farmiga, Blake Ritson, Simon Jones, Harry Richardson, Thomas Cocquerel, Jack Gilpin, with Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski.
The Gilded Age‘s Season 1 finale airs March 21.
Good news. I enjoyed the first three episodes, and I’m hoping the rest of the season improves on the foundation. Hoping the Russells’ staff prove their worth any day now.
Not surprised…I think it’s BETTER than “Downton Abby” (although it has a few of the “tropes” the other show had…)
…now what about season 2 of “…and just like that.”
Yes! I’m absolutely loving this show. I’m definitely hoping we’ll get Marian/Larry as the main ship though.
Only watched episode 1 (on pause due to Olympics viewing) but didn’t see a single character that was likeable, in contrast with Downton Abbey.
I gave it 2 episodes and found certain characters more likeable in the second, i had been ready to pass after the first.
I gave it one and a half episodes before I gave up. So dull! Downton Abbey never felt that boring. I couldn’t believe they could waste someone like Christine Baranski that way.
Do we know if Belgravia will get another season… this news made me think of it…
I think they just left that show as is and never announced anything. For that reason its probably a 50/50 situation whether it comes back or not.
It was advertised as a limited series.
Belgravia was based on Fellowes’s novel. I don’t believe it’ll be back, but Fellowes admitted he is willing to go for a second season if the network asked for it.
I’ll wait until all the episodes have aired to give it a try.
I think the show is seen to be HBOs Downton Abbey. If it continues to grow in audience it could probably last just as long.
I love The Gilded Age!
So this show got renewed but not Lovecraft. I guess some things never change
Yes. Television still depends on ratings.
Would love The Gilded Age more if they did not adhere quite so tightly to the HBO Writer’s Checklist of required elements that must take place in all productions thing. The old shoes in the bag part last night was especially egregious. Sigh.
