When it comes to Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson, the jokes pretty much write themselves.
Stephen Colbert on Thursday took a deep dive into the presidential hopeful’s most recent campaign flubs, which have included his inability to identify Aleppo, the epicenter of the Syrian refugee crisis, or name a single international leader he admires who is currently living.
“Libertarians have long been waiting for a smart, respectable candidate to represent their values — and the wait continues,” Colbert concluded.
Referring to New Mexico’s former governor as an “aging clown without makeup,” the Late Show host let his clip packages do most of the work, which featured Johnson’s kooky explanation of global warming and a bizarre interview where he answered a question while biting his tongue. And while the polls aren’t in Johnson’s favor, Colbert argued that the third-party nominee is only the second craziest candidate in the running.
Watch the complete Late Show segment above, then tell us how you’re feeling about Johnson following some of his most recent campaign faux pas.
Remember to vote in November….as long as you vote the way we tell you to.
Many Americans can’t name the Vice-President. He expects a stoner candidate to name a living international leader he admires!?!? Heck, I can name several international leaders, but I have a hard time finding one I admire.
You honestly don’t think that a president should be conversant in international politics?
“A living international leader he admires”…A President must be fluent in international poitics, of course. Admire denotes a bit of fandom. CLosest I can come personally is Netanyahu, though I consider his a bit brash and bombastic.
Funny how the mainstream media has suddenly decided to go after Johnson. I guess they finally realized his candidacy is hurting Clinton, not Trump.
Nope they are pointing out he is clueless on a lot of important key issues. Gee people please listen to what comes out of these Candidate’s mouth. We cannot afford to elect someone who is fish out of water. Nobody is asking you to be Einstein but please use some common sense.
Actually in 4-way polling it’s evident that Trump loses more support than Clinton from the same people being polled head-to-head. Pure fact. What the media has realized is that Johnson is gold as far as face palming sound bytes go. Maybe that’s irresponsible, but Gary Johnson would be an irresponsible choice to lead the free world, so fair’s fair.
Issues? Temporarily blanking on a name isn’t an issue unless you’re running for the position of Jeopardy contestant. Endless wars, destabilizing Libya and the growth of Isis, growing debt, release of classified information, thinking a wall is workable immigration policy, ignorance of the economic principles of trade… these are issues. There is no serious discussion of issues that matter on television anymore; now it’s all either partisan bickering or snark and mockery in quick, misleading clips on late night shows.
Well, he’s making it pretty darn easy to “go after” him. Every time he opens his mouth, he proves he’s not even remotely qualified to be President. And don’t get me started on his terrible policy ideas.
He is not going to get any electoral college votes so he isn’t really hurting anyone. His core base voters aren’t going to vote for Clinton or Trump anyways.
I’m voting for Gary. But just to show you how stupid your comment is….. let me explain it to you in simple words: If there are 10 votes and Killary gets 6 and Dumph gets 4. Killary gets all the Electorial votes. IF.. 3 of the 10 voted for Gary, then maybe Killary gets only 3, Dumph still gets 4, and wins all the Electorial Votes. That is why all these Liberal TV networks and Websites are so worried about Gary. Including this site.
Why do you bother? The self-blinding is real. Because the man was not a Governor, so he must be new to politics. It’s right he is exposed by gotcha quasi-comedy.
It’s just cause he’s said some funny things recently. A good joke is almost as important to the news cycle as a good scandal.
And the lunatics on the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune just endorsed Mr. What’s Aleppo. Go figure.
It’s relatively concerning to me that every time the media actually gives Gary Johnson a microphone, he squanders the opportunity by illustrating complete unreadiness to lead a children’s birthday party, rather than give anyone a good reason to vote for him to be president (as opposed to against Trump or Clinton). Even America’s third-party options are atrocious!
They certainly aren’t good 3rd party candidates…but I can vote 3rd party without feeling like I supported either of the big 2.
Well voting 3rd party is like supporting one of the big 2, because it takes away a vote from them.
You can’t take something away from somebody who doesn’t own it. No one’s vote belongs to “the big two,” it belongs to the individual voter who is free to do with it what they want.
Not really, because neither of those candidates would get my vote either way
I thought he was having a stroke…..Was it a joke?
Indeed Gary Johnson CAN NOT be president because he can’t name international politicians. That is a far greater sin than Clinton’s war mongering, dishonesty, criminal activity, and complete and utter failure to keep safe state secrets. It’s also a far greater sin than Rump’s…well…everything. I used to like you Colbert but you can eat a giant bag of dicks on this one. Johnson is the only real, decent human being in this circus, your gal Hillary is a god forsaken butcher but that’s brown people so that’s ok to you I guess. She wears a blue button so that makes it ok that she has taken tens of millions of dollars from nations who throw homosexuals off of roofs because they don’t rate bullets and who believe women to be so fundamentally retarded that they can’t be allowed to drive. I guess whatever markers she owes those nations is OK with you, Colbert. I’d rather have Johnson in there and let his people brief him when it’s diplomacy time. And remember, Clinton couldn’t name anybody in 2008 either and shortly before that she was one of the strongest voices for building a wall between us and Mexico the racist pig!
A little stronger language that I would have used, but I like your message. Oh, and he Can name foreign Leaders, just not one he “admires”. Which is exactly how I feel about them. Go Gary!
Clinton starts spending $millions to bash third party candidates, and the media job on board (e.g. covering this story rather than myriad other Colbert bits). Everyone has memory glitches, in contrast to the delusional fantasies of those that pretend major party candidates somehow never do. People ignore the many claims Clinton has made to not recall basic things about her email server issue and security briefings, and makes a big deal of a couple of memory glitches by Johnson. I have little doubt that Clinton and Trump have memory glitches, likely far more often than Johnson (as do the journalists and commenters that mock Johnson). Out of myriad hours of substantive discourse from Johnson, the media ignore that and focus on the occasional gaffe.I suspect the odds are Johnson is so busy he isn’t sleeping enough, and most people who have ever operated on too little sleep realize their memory can glitch, and its not a big deal, you look the info up or in the case of a president they ask staff. The media is biased towards the major parties, and Clinton is spending millions to bash 3rd parties so the media is going along.
There are no Libertarian foreign leaders, it isn’t surprising that a Libertarian would have trouble thinking of one he admires. Libertarian foreign policy is essentially to stop meddling around the world so there isn’t a need for him to have every detail of other countries fresh in mind at all times. He is proposing to govern this country, not Mexico or Syria.
I couldn’t have said it better myself, sir! Thank You!
