The tamale train has pulled back into the station.
The rest of the world won’t get its first glimpse at So You Think You Can Dance‘s upcoming Season 14 until a promo aired during Sunday’s Miss USA pageant, but we’ve got an exclusive sneak peek at the first footage from the show’s back-to-basics (read: no more kids!) cycle.
The video above offers many of the SYTYCD staples: returning judges Nigel Lythgoe and Mary “Tamale Train” Murphy (who was absent from Season 13), earnest young artists hoping for a chance at fame, limber dancers doing moves that make our hamstrings hurt, a sexy ballroom audition (that ends in an actual liplock!) and the obligatory shots of successful hoofers holding their golden tickets to the next round of competition.
What’s new: Vanessa Hudgens (Grease: Live), who seems like an ebullient and enthusiastic temporary addition to the judges’ table.
“You just shine on that stage,” she tells one hopeful entrant.
SYTYCD returns Monday, June 12, at 8/7c on Fox. Press PLAY on the video at the top of the post to get your first look at SYTYCD‘s Season 14, then hit the comments with your thoughts!
My love for the show has waned but I’m excited Mary is back and that the stupid kid experience is over. The only thing I wish for is the old stage. Maybe then old school magic could be restored. That huge stage swallows the performers especially during solo or two person performances. I hate it. The original stage was so much more intimate.
SYTYCD is back after a couple of disastrous missteps! Yay!
Well the stage might change as it progresses. We will see. Before they’d film the finals in the Kodiak Theatre in Hollywood but maybe they changed locations to downtown now? Not sure, but we will see and you are so right that kid experience was unwatchable I’m happy to finally have it back to normal.
Agreed on the stage.
Lola…. I couldn’t have said it better myself! Truly excited Mary is back.. and kids are gone! I used to watch religiously until all the craziness. Now I’ll try again. Can’t wait!
I miss the old stage, and I miss the old camera work. The last few seasons I feel like the cameras were either too close or too far, and never focused on the right moment – maybe that’s related to having to work with the newer stage.
Did not watch the last season but will definitely check out this one. As long as there are no unnecessary Justin Bieber (or whatever) connections, Jason Derulo, or kids, and we get what made SYTYCD great in the first place back, I will be happy.
We used to get eps from late May and we had double eps for many years. I wish we saw more auditions and more Vegas week.
SO glad Mary is back where she belongs! SHAME on Nigel!
Unfortunately Nigel is still there to perv out,lol
The female dancers who audition are young, fit and beautiful. I miss the days when someone could acknowledge that publicly without being labeled a perv.
Does this mean Derulo is officially out? I don’t know if I heard anything official aside from no kids and Paula leaving (plus Mary returning)
Yes, Derulo is out. It was announced fairly quietly as Paula Abdul’s departure got more attention. They likely wanted to avoid the screams of happiness when they announced he was leaving.
That makes sense. I mean they can only take so much right?
I watch this show from first season until now it is an amazing show didn’t see anything wrong with Jason and the kids. Loved it
Pleased…very pleased that it will be back. I’d say that this will likely be its swan song, but it has managed to defy expectations a few times. That said, it does need to be freshened up. It’s clear the powers that be don’t know how to do that though. The attempt to do it with kids was just a incredibly poor judgement. Like so many sports teams that keep changing the players, but the actual problem lies at the top, SYTYCD is in the same situation. Why they never did an all-stars season is beyond me.
I skipped last season and struggled with the Street vs Stage concept which ran against the grain of all the previous seasons.
Mary was really getting on my nerves for awhile but what followed was a disaster. I never thought I would miss Mary being on the show. Was I wrong. No kids and Mary’s back. Now, maybe things will be on track.
Never missed any of the season’s. Love the show. Hope to season 14 on our TV’s soon in South Africa.
Since I skipped last season, and no mention of Kat, is she still with the show? One of the best hosts a show could hope for.
I’d also like to see them bring back guest judges like Christina Applegate, who I thought held her own quite well, Kenny Ortega, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. I enjoyed their critiques.
Misty Copeland!!
Happy SYTYCD is back, happy Mary is back, and happy the gimmicks (stage vs street and the kids) are gone. Looking forward to watching again.
Please don’t mess it up this time Nigel, with your gimmicks.
I think It’s great that Mary’s back.don’t know her,but I’ve heard she’s great.
I think the SYTYCD Next Generation was INCREDIBLE. So much more talent than the “oldies” who make up the final 20!
I love Mary love her dancing
Not happy with Mary’s return. All that screaming detracts from the show. Wished she was gone.
It was the show devolving that turned most of the judging into catchphrases, overpraise and yes, screaming. Go back to season 1-3 and the difference in the judging is so pronounced. They actually gave criticism for dances, instead of all the judges agreeing, praising the choreo and being vague and untechnical in their commets.
Anyone but Jason Derulo.
wait, guest judge? does that mean she;ll be there all season? i like her. glad to she her here, or is derulo back?
Where is my Paula?
So glad to see the original SYTYCD back!!!!
I have the last season still on my DVR – have never watched it, and figured I’d wait until I could just marathon it. Maybe now I won’t, after some of the comments. Well, at least I can fast forward and just watch the actual dancers. GLAD Mary is back. I love her humor and enthusiasm, but mostly love how spot-on her critiques are. I’ve been disappointed over several of the “guest” judges over the years. Also, from the other comments, I agree – the size of the stage and the filming just is lacking the intimacy the old stage had. I’m sure part of the problem with the filming is having to follow the dancers across such a large area. Fingers crossed we get back to the original feeling!
so glad they got the kids out of the show. Now we can watch this fantastic show again. Really looking forward to it
So glad you’re back to your regular show. It was unwatchable with the kids. We were really disappointed but so thrilled you are making a come back
