Sherlock Season 4

For all you Sherlock fans waiting impatiently for the show to return next year, savor those episodes. Because they may be the last ones you get.

Benedict Cumberbatch, who stars as the titular sleuth in PBS’s modern-day reboot, tells the UK edition of GQ magazine that the upcoming fourth season of the show might be the final one.

“It feels like the end of an era, to be honest,” he says, adding that Season 4 “goes to a place where it will be pretty hard to follow on immediately.”

This isn’t completely unexpected: With both Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman starring in big-budget blockbusters and showrunner Steven Moffat busy with a little show called Doctor Who, it’s always been tough to find time to film Sherlock. The last regular episode, not counting January’s holiday special “The Abominable Bride,” aired nearly three years ago.

But before you burst into tears and start burning your Sherlock scarves in anger, know that Cumberbatch hasn’t completely closed the door on the role: “We never say never on the show. I’d love to keep revisiting it. But in the immediate future, we all have things that we want to crack on with, and we’ve made something very complete as it is, so I think we’ll just wait and see.”

You hear that, Sherlock fans? Just wait. You’re used to that by now, right?

Are you shattered to hear Sherlock might be ending? Or is it time for him to hang up his deerstalker cap? Hit the comments and share your thoughts.
