One of TV’s seminal gone-too-soon dramas could be back-after-a-long-while.
Adrian Pasdar told TVLine that a “reboot” of Profit — which was famously pulled from Fox’s schedule after just four airings in April 1996 — is being developed by director/producer Tawnia McKiernan, daughter of Stephen J. Cannell (an EP on the original series).
A rep for McKiernan did not respond to TVLine’s requests for comment on the status of the project.
“The time is right,” Pasdar said during a recent interview, reflecting on his title role as a ruthless businessman who preceded such TV antiheroes as Tony Soprano, Dexter Morgan and Walter White. “We’re in an era where it would be much more well-received by John Q. Public than it was however many years ago.”
Co-created by David Greenwalt (Grimm) and John McNamara (The Magicians), Profit starred Pasdar as Jim Profit, a junior executive at the multinational conglomerate Gracen & Gracen, where he was perceived as a “golden boy” all the while concealing a dark side that wasn’t above using any means necessary to get ahead — including bribery, blackmail, intimidation, extortion and even murder.
Oh, and Profit slept in a cardboard G&G shipping box.
“It was the progenitor” of shows such as The Sopranos and Dexter, Pasdar noted. “It didn’t give birth to the antihero, but brought it to the television medium.”
McKiernan, who as a director most recently has worked on Black Lightning, Supergirl and Criminal Minds, was previously attached to a contemporary remake of Cannell’s 1980s action series The A-Team, but that is no longer in development.
“We’re trying to put this together,” said Pasdar, “and I look forward to where that might lead.” As for the decades gone by and how that affects his status as the possible lead, Pasdar assured, “We’ve got that factored in.”
The original Profit‘s production company, 20th Century Fox TV, had no comment on the potential reboot.
One of my all time favorite shows. Would love to see a continuation.
This would be awesome!!! Such a great show
A reboot or continuation that I would like to see would be the series The Pretender, which was exhibited in the period of (1996-2000) with Michael T. Weiss and Andrea Parker in the main roles, this couple had chemistry, but unfortunately never really became canon, despite all the signs and the series was very good.
Watching The Pretender & Profiler was some quality television for me. I need to do a marathon of those shows with my DVDs. There is still more that can be done with The Pretender. I know they didn’t tie everything up in those TV movies.
This!!! I saw this article and remembered how cool Profit was and was thinking that it was around the same time as one of my all-time favorites… The Pretender! I’m not crazy about reboots, and loved all the original actors’ portrayals… but if done right, a Pretender remake would be so much fun to watch. The 2nd movie after the series was a bit wonky though.
No…..way…..!
I like the idea of rebooting shows that barely got a chance to live so long as they have as least a good connection to the original. A full on revival of gone too soon shows would be even better. I suggest Pushing Daisies, Life, and if NBC isn’t going to renew Timeless, then I want them to bring back Journeyman. Heck, even if they do finally renew Timeless, I want them to bring back Journeyman.
Journeyman <3 Didn’t even realize anyone else remembered it!
Journeyman was fantastic! Seriously, there were so many good shows that got axed because of Jay Leno moving to 10p that year! Personally, I wish they’d try again with Wonderfalls, Better Off Ted and Go On.
If they do a reboot of Wonderfalls I hope it’s better than the last time with the pilot and storyline.
I freaking LOVE Wonderfalls! I still watch it pretty regularly. I’m so thankful it got a dvd release.
Journeyman was just the best! One of the first cancellations that really hurt.
Life was another show that I absolutely loved and couldn’t fathom why they’d end it. Donal Logue and Sarah Shahi!
Yes, I am hoping for a Pushing Daises revival.
I *loved* ‘Profit’! It’s the first show I was really into that then got cancelled after only a few episodes (and there have sadly been many since). I still remember the cardboard box!
I remember the cardboard box too it was my favorite too but you know FOX they always cancelled great shows I’m still mad they took off Werewolf.
This was such a weird, awesome show. It truly was ahead of its time.
I agree.
Every time I see Pasdar I think of the box. Unfortunately, I don’t remember much else from that show.
Huge fan of Profit. I have it on dvd. Can not wait for revival.
Please please do something with The Pretender. It needs a revival not a reboot. It was never tied up with the movies. Jared and Ms. Parker had off the chart chemistry.
it was a travesty when that show was ripped off the airwaves. one of my all time favorites. I bought the DVD just so i could see all the episodes
Not sure about another reboot, but Profit was an excellent show. I remember the director had explained in an interview that Profit in a season 2 would have followed a Gracen into the world of politics, sounded a really good idea at the time.
Fox is rebooting a show that was canned in 1996 after 4 episodes? – they could have gotten the right for Forever instead (had 22 episodes) and reboot / continue with recast that!
Yes bring this back and bring back Journeyman and Sliders(different cast)
One of my all-time favorite shows…I still watch the DVD from time to time
Just wondering if this Profit reboot is still a thing. I really hope so. This show was such a gem back in 1995 dealing with everything from mix race couples, lgbtq, advanced technology and a solid anti hero. Truly a diamond in the sea of tv shows in the 90’s
