ABC is strengthening its Modern Family ties.
After months of painstaking negotiations with 20th Century Fox TV, the Alphabet net has finalized a new two-season renewal deal that will keep the Emmy-winning comedy on the air through Season 10.
The series’ six core adult actors — Ed O’Neill, Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet — were reportedly seeking significant pay-hikes in exchange for a two-year commitment. Each had been pocketing $350K an episode. Per Deadline, they will now each be making $500K an episode.
“Modern Family has been the centerpiece of our comedy brand for eight seasons and we are thrilled to have it on our schedule for two more years,” said ABC president Channing Dungey in a statement.
Added EP Steve Levitan: “We are beyond thrilled that we get to spend more time with these characters, these amazing actors, our ridiculously-talented writers and our incredible crew — all of whom are like family to us. And the good kind of family, not the kind that argues with you all the time.”
With the two-season, 44-episode order, Modern Family‘s episode tally will reach at least 232.
Haven’t watched in two seasons but I’ve heard this show has plummeted even further creatively.
I’m meh about Modern Family at this point. It definitely isn’t what it used to be. I think part of it is I don’t really like any of the kid characters now that they’re older. Except Haley actually. Dumb characters are a dime a dozen but Sarah Hyland really sells it.
I honestly wish they would have her grow up a bit and move out of her parents basement.
Spot on. Haley is the only one of the kids that is anywhere near as cute and funny as they used to be. Luke and Manny have become painful to watch, Lily is getting awkward and I cannot separate Alex from her personal crazy, slutty persona.
This show is never going to end is it?
Really? Two years? Show has been on autopilot for years. Maybe they’ll get some new writers to liven up this once funny show.
You have to be kidding me? It was a great show but the past two seasons it has went downhill. I sadly dropped it in January and was going to watch next season if it was renewed for a shortened 13 episode finale season but I’ll wait for repeats. I truly hope they have a plan and this doesn’t end up going out with a whimper like Glee after Fox stupidly renewed it for two seasons.
Meh
Couldn’t be happier. It’s creativity and ratings are down but it’s still a decent show and the second highest rated comedy on tv. Good for them.
I used to be a die-hard fan of this show but now I have almost 2 full seasons on DVR still to be watched. I just can’t be bothered.
It’s both not as good as it once was, but still quality television. I’m not mad at this.
Haven’t watched any of this season but I will, impressive that the core cast remains the same (& happy) & the showrunner hasn’t bailed, what a rarity in today’s TV landscape.
Still love this show, in fact, we never miss it. Glad to see it will be on a bit longer.
I called it! I defended this show as I knew it had the power to go on 2 more years. I expect season 10 to be the end and that’s fine by me because that’s an impressive episode count. Considering Friends cast was getting $1 million per episode $500 seems fairly low but then again ratings aren’t the same. Even $350 now seems lower for Season 8 then I would have thought. Glad they could keep costs just low enough to keep the show around!
Friends was getting 20 million plus viewers an episode and did pretty well in syndication. MF has been going downhill creatively and I doubt will win anymore Emmys and it only does ok when repeats air on USA plus this season it’s been hitting all time lows. I really enjoyed the show its first 6 seasons and do not want to see it appear on lists of shows that went on past their prime.
When Friends was on, there was no DVR, Netflix or illegal downloading. You can’t compare rarings from then and now.
$500K per episode??!! Wow. Takes me ten years to earn that kind of dough……
I still enjoy Modern Family, but The Middle is the better show. If season ten were to be the last for Modern Family, that would be fine.
100% agree. Modern Family is getting tired, The Middle however, has figured out how to grow with the kids and remain funny and human. I’d kind of like to see Sue graduate from college too, but that’s giving them 10 seasons as well.
Exactly. In fact, I feel “The Middle” is really just hitting its stride. I think they still have years of stories left to tell. “Modern Family” has no idea what to with Alex or how to let Manny and Luke grow up.
Agree 100%. The Middle has been so good this season while the same aged Modern Family is showing it’s age. The episode where Brick meets the kid with whom he was separated at birth was just fabulous. We still need to see Sue and the Donahue boy get together. And who doesn’t want to know what happens to Axel after graduation? Does anyone really care what any of the Pritchett/Delgado/Dunphy kids do next?
I get why ABC wants to hang on to this( after all it is their highest rated comedy) but TWO!!! more years. Just like CBS with TBBT, they are overplaying their hand with this show renewing it for two more years. In case ABC hasn’t noticed MF’S ratings have sagged and there is no reason to believe that will stop anytime soon. So far not impressed with Dungey’s decisions.
Glad actors are getting rich…stopped watching long ago.
the middle always has been far superior to modern family & they have the better writing & acting & story telling. modern family is a wash fir what used to be good tv
Modern Family is what’s it’s always been — a comedy of errors. Every episodes has essentially the same core idea — misunderstanding and miscommunication tha lead to characters acting shady, confusing and going behind each other’s back until it is all explained and everything is tied up with a neat bow. People complain it is a formula — BECAUSE IT IS. It has always been. Personally, I really enjoy the model, and as long as they come up with two years worthy of misunderstandings, it’s fine by me.
I hadn’t watched the show for almost two years, but for some reason I watched last night’s episode (just killing time before Speechless). It was a pretty decent episode. I was surprised.
