Perhaps Maggie‘s titular psychic already saw this news coming: Hulu has cancelled the romantic comedy after just one season, TVLine has confirmed.
Although streamers rather famously do not disclose viewership/”ratings,” it is worth nothing that in the weeks since Maggie‘s July 6 debut, it has not once cracked the Top 10 on Nielsen’s weekly U.S. ranking of streaming originals (whereas Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building has been a steady presence).
The series — which was originally produced for ABC before moving to the streamer — starred Rebecca Rittenhouse (The Mindy Project) as the aforementioned Maggie, who gets a glimpse of her own potential romantic future with sweet history teacher Ben (The Baker and the Beauty‘s David Del Rio). There’s just one catch: Maggie also had a vision of him marrying his longtime girlfriend Jessie (The Carrie Diaries‘ Chloe Bridges).
The cast also included Nichole Sakura (Superstore) as Maggie’s best friend Louise; Ray Ford (Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23) as Maggie’s psychic Angel; Angelique Cabral (Life in Pieces) and Leonardo Nam (Westworld) as Ben’s sister Amy and brother-in-law Dave; and Kerri Kenney (Reno 911!, Superstore) and Chris Elliott (Schitt’s Creek) as Maggie’s slightly oddball parents, who own the duplex she (and Ben and Jessie) reside in.
Our sister site Variety was first to report the cancellation. TVLine’s Streaming Renewal Scorecard has been updated with the news. Hit the comments with your reactions!
Oh come on! This was a cute show 🙁
I hope Rebecca Rittenhouse isn’t the new Britt Robertson. Both very likable actors whose shows can’t get past a season.
I agree!
Yeah… this cancellation stings quite a bit.
No, this show was so cute. I need another season!!!
I liked this show okay, but couldn’t get past the general attitude of: “Oh yeah, some psychics really can predict the future, which would change reality as we know it, but why bother thinking about that when we have boyfriend issues to deal with?”
Thought the premise is that even if you can see the future, you don’t know everything that are going to happen? She literally only see a moment in time without any context. Like her father with the mug turns out to be completely random item his picked up
This was one of my shows to watch from the May upfronts of 2021. After watching it i can see why ABC dumped it to hulu. While I liked the idea of the show, it just didn’t find its voice. I was expecting more of a ‘wacky hijinks’ kind of show. Instead it was a milquetoast flavored nothing. A big disappointment for me.
Here I was just about to start watching this. Folks who have: is it still worth it to watch this single season, it did it end on too much of a cliff hanger?
It’s worth a watch. It’s super cute and light. The cast is fantastic. Maggie’s parents are hilarious enough by themselves to give it a shot. I assumed it would get cancelled because I had basically never heard of it until after it premiered and I enjoyed it.
Thank you. Looks like a good cast, which is why it looked interesting. Just recently found this and put it on my watchlist. ONLY found it b/c I read PEN15 had been cancelled, and I hadn’t even realized the back-half of S2 had been released! Hulu needs to promote its new shows and returns better.
I just recently finished the season and really enjoyed it and I thought the last episode was good but still left some things unanswered but I wouldn’t call it a cliffhanger per say.
It’s quite sweet. Honestly don’t mind spending time with these people even in real life, which can not be said to most comedy show’s characters
I like this cute and quirky show! 😢
I saw this news coming, but was still hoping for more. Dang it
awww bummer! I thought it was a cute show! binged it pretty quick and would have watched a second season for sure.
I’m really disappointed but unfortunately not terribly surprised. I thought this was an adorable and funny show with a wonderful cast.
SOOO much better, and funnier, than How I Met Your Father which of course has already been renewed.
Not surprised it was cancelled. I hadn’t heard of it until a few weeks ago when it showed up on Disney+ (I live in Canada so we get some Hulu programming after a delay on the Star hub, but not all. OMITB appeared day and date as Hulu). I thought it was cute and fun.
Definitely had potential if they went with more a quirky, hijinks vibe. Unfortunately they decided to make it more of a rom-com and it felt too stale for my tastes. It was light and fun, but could have been so much better. I can totally see why ABC dumped it on Hulu.
Very disappointed. Was a solid rom-com series and there aren’t enough of those.
Ugh I hate when this happens!! I binged the season as soon as it came out and really wanted to see more! The whole cast was fantastic!
Sad. Just sad. Greatly entertaining and delightful escapism
Light, cute, funny and SUCH a stellar cast.
Boooooo
Oh man this show was bad….skipped through big chunks to get to the end!! Don’t know if it was the script but it didn’t work for me.
It didn’t bode well that ABC dumped it on Hulu, but I really enjoyed it. As others have said, it was funny & light. I found it the concept more unique than most.
Bummer that show was adorable
I loved this show was really looking forward to season 2
Aw, poor Rebecca Rittenhouse can’t catch a break!
Disappointed! I thought it was a cute show!
I’m still mad at Hulu for canceling High Fidelity.. now Maggie. This was a fun show and was hoping to see how it all played out.
Doesn’t surprise me, but I thought it was cute.
It was surprisingly cute, but you didn’t really need to be a psychic to see this coming. I actually stayed up late binging it, which I almost never do.
I was hoping for a second season so we could find out what happened to all the relationships, and it was nice to have a light funny show to watch.
So sorry to hear this. I found the show by accident but am not surprised by the news since it reportedly got very low ratings. It seems as if was barely promoted so what did they expect? Even on here people are saying they found it by accident. I thought the cast was very talented and likeable. It was just a laid back, funny, escapist watch, which is what I need and look for. And i agree with whoever said it… much better than How I Met Your Father, which was completely blah… but was renewed. A real bummer.
We really enjoyed this! Clever writing so of course it had to go.
Aw, I liked it and was hoping for a second season. It didn’t have a whole lot of momentum at times (like too much backtracking in terms of the plot) but the characters were sweet and not annoying, which isn’t something you can say about most sitcoms these days. (Call Me Kat, I’m looking at you.)
