Throw your hands in the air, and chung-chung ’em like you just don’t care: NBC’s indefatigable Law & Order: SVU will be back for Season 19, TVLine has learned.
The renewal brings the Mariska Hargitay-led series closer to matching the original Law & Order, which ran for 20 seasons, in longevity. (In case you’re curious: Gunsmoke also ran 20 seasons, and The Simpsons, now in its 28th season, holds the record for longest-running, scripted, primetime program.)
In its current 18th season, SVU has been averaging just under 6 million viewers and a 1.3 demo rating.
It looks like they’re going to go for the record. They really should go ahead and bring back the original in some form. Although I’ll bet NCIS may end up going for that record too.
Wonder if SVU reaches 20 and ties it with Gunsmoke and the original Law & Order.
I haven’t watched SVU in years but wasn’t NBC attempting to revive Law & Order a year or so ago? I can see SVU breaking a record vs NCIS. I think it honestly was time for Weatherly to move on but I just could not get into this new season and ended up dropping it.
I hope they get some better writers next year because this season has been super boring! It’s gotten preachy and simplistic – like an “Afternoon Special” for adults. Hopefully they can lure Chris Meloni back too….
I agree! I’d definitely watch the show again if Christopher Meloni came back.
Good for fans and not a surprise at all. What a sturdy show this has been for NBC

I don’t always watch SVU, but when I do, it’s when it crosses over with Chicago PD”
Honestly, at some point, it seems like one of their perps/suspects would be someone who’d spent 18 years watching a TV show about sex crimes. That’s pretty disturbing in and of itself, to be honest.
Was there ever any doubt?
Sorry but 19 seasons of SVU (far outlived any purpose as far as I can tell). Yet NBC couldn’t give us a S2 of Timeless?
SVU’s ratings are pretty steady and it sells wonderfully around the world for them. Why give that up to take a chance on some flash in the pan junk like Timeless?
With SVU, the high production cost, plus any lost ad revenue from lower ratings is made up for in syndication money so there’s great reason to keep it going.
With Timeless, any lost ad revenue due to poor ratings means a loss of money for the network. It stinks when shows are cancelled, but networks are like any business and don’t want to lose money.
beginning to wonder what kind of pictures Mariska has of Dick Wolf and the programming division on NBC. That’s the only reason SVU keeps getting renewed.
It looks like the sky really is the limit for “Law & Order: SVU” … it’s NBC’s equivalent of “The Simpsons”.
Thrilled to see it renewed. Love it, always will. Hope it goes to 21!
I hear they have yet another new showrunner. The other guy left. And I hear that Dean Winters is coming back at least for the first 2 episodes but can’t find out much about it. I have seen photos of them on set. But that is all. Being kept very quiet.
