Det. Stabler’s already messy home life is about to get a whole lot more complicated.
Oscar-winner Ellen Burstyn will make her Law & Order: Organized Crime debut in the NBC drama’s upcoming Season 2 — and we’ve got an exclusive first look at the return of Elliot’s mom.
Burstyn first played Bernadette “Bernie” Stabler in a Season 10 episode of Law & Order: SVU in which her granddaughter, Kathleen, was arrested. During her visit, we learned that Bernie is bipolar and that she once nearly killed Elliot when he was a little boy.
When Bernie shows up in the spinoff, Elliot is not expecting her. In the same episode — which airs Thursday, Sept. 30, at 9/8c and which is the first half of a two-part Organized Crime — Stabler’s loyalty is tested at work, and Bell and Jet navigate a newly established task force.
In the photo at the top of this post, neither Elliot nor Kathleen look very happy about Bernie’s reappearance. But then again, in the photo below, Bernie herself doesn’t look all that jazzed. Oh, Stablers.
Burstyn won a Guest Actress Emmy for her SVU performance. Her other TV series include House of Cards, Louie, Big Love, Political Animals and The Ellen Burstyn Show. In Showtime’s upcoming The First Lady, she’ll play Sara Delano Roosevelt.

The SVU episode featuring Burstyn was one of the best of the series so I am thrilled to see that she’s returning.
Will Stabler find out that Liv was responsible for convincing his mother to speak with Kathleen when she was first diagnosed????

‘Newly established taskforce’ guess this means for their respective seasons SVU and Organized Crime will be crossing paths in the aftermath of the trafficking storyline and Wheatly being imprisoned from last seasons.
Have waited a long, long time for Bernie to make another appearance. Excited to learn exactly what brings her back. Also, prefer Bernie’s presence over any/all of the Stabler offspring! Those kids are a sad sack bunch.
She was marvelous in her role on SVU. Her scenes with Mariska had me bawling. Poor Stabler, he doesn’t need any of this right now.
Dick Wolf must be pushing for more packed action in the Law & Order world, it feels different this year. Wonder what the 3rd L&O NBC series will be? With Annabella Sciorra guest starring on SVU last year, wonder if Criminal Intent is coming back?
Criminal Intent ended before it should’ve tbh. Same for CSI Miami. I hope those two both end up coming back soon enough.
Ellen Burstyn is a fantastic actress. As Bernie she was brilliant. I can’t wait for her return. Very excited
So excited to see Burstyn reprise her role! The episode when we learned about Stabler’s mom was fantastic! And so enlightening about bipolar! She is a fantastic actress. Can’t wait!
