Exclusive: Glee Mulling Full-Time Shift to ‘NYC’
Glee may soon be taking a bigger bite out of the Big Apple.
Fox’s groundbreaking musical — which for the past year-plus has been splitting its focus between New York and Lima, Ohio — may shift the action entirely to the City That Never Sleeps as early as this season, sources confirm to TVLine exclusively.

It’s one of several ideas Fox is discussing with Glee creators Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, who have been forced to reexamine all aspects of the show in the wake of Cory Monteith’s tragic death in July.
In an interview earlier this month, Murphy acknowledged that navigating the post-Finn era has been “f—ing hard,” adding, “It’s hard every day. It’s hard in the writers room, it’s hard on the set.”
Murphy also hinted that he had “a good idea” that would carry the show through to its sixth and likely final season next year. “I’m going to tell the studio and the network how after Cory’s unfortunate passing we can end the show [in a way] that I think is very satisfactory,” he shared. “And kind of in his honor, which I love.”

If the Gotham-centric plan gets a green light, Glee is not expected to move its production to the East Coast — although more frequent on-location shoots would be likely. Additionally, producers would be faced with the difficult task of deciding which characters currently tied to Lima (and McKinley High) would join Rachel, Kurt and Santana in NYC.

It’s funny how I started last season loathing Kitty, and she turns out to be the one character I actually got attached to.
I know, right? Who would have thought?
I’ve grown to love Kitty with Artie. Not sure how I would feel about her alone. They have already set it up for Artie to be in Brooklyn for film school. Blaine obviously has to go, whether he and Kurt remain an item or not. Sam could get a job at Chippendales. Unfortunately, I have no desire for Tina to go. I feel like it is the shows fault, because they have turned her into a shallow uncaring character….and she never sings! She has a great voice, but they didn’t let her sing. Were they trying to make her like Rachael? Because she didn’t pull it off, IMO. I will miss Mr. Schuster, but he never sings anymore either. And while the others are undeniably talented, its time to let them go. Again, this is IMO.
This is the worst idea EVER!!!!… Tina and Artie are the 2 originals that are still on the show, Im actually looking forward to see both of them in NY with Rachel and Kurt!
I doubt that’s the worst idea ever. I think the idea of centering the show around Sam doing impressions at a comedy club in Utah is much worse!
That being said, I think we’d enjoy the newbies a lot more if there wasn’t so much focus on New York and the character everyone knows. I’d also like to see a lot more Warblers!
I wouldn’t enjoy the newbies more cause I wouldn’t be watching. They gave them plenty of focus more focus than NY and Lima was boring. I was sick of the songs just them running around in circle was stupid. The Warblers have been worthless since the end of season 2.

Santana can’t even make Lima interesting. She only added to NY cause they actual wrote some comedy for them finally. If they only wrote drama for her like they did NY any comedy from anyone would have help.
What´s the point to send current ND to NYC? They will ruin what´s working right now on Glee. Blaine and Sam are a BIG joke and so dumb/bland. NYC is classy and smart.

Lima is now all gimmicks and costumes. Not sure I was say classy but not as juvenile as Blam is even as seniors Kurt and Rachel weren’t running aorund in superhero costumes.

Agreed except I’m not sure if I want Sam and Tina regularly yet. They have their okay moments but it wouldn’t be the biggest lost if they don’t come back. Blaine and Artie yes though .
The only newbie ND member I would miss is Kitty, she is definitely the most interesting. The others, not that I hate them at all, are kind of boring and it wouldn’t be that big of a loss.
I would miss Unique and Kitty of the new characters (though I wish Kitty would let her hair down or cut it; that pulled tight look isn’t attractive). The new CAST are ok; the new CHARACTERS are bland and homogenous. The only time Marley has stood out was when she was with either Unique or Kitty.
No thanks. They should get rid of all the newbies (except Kitty maybe) and drop the whole McKinley side, and then focus on Kurt, Rachel, Blaine, Santana and Artie in New York. Definitely don’t need Sam and Tina there though.

Honestly if glee wants too last they really should just get rid of all new york scenes and center the show around mckinley and the glee club. Degrassi is the perfect example its on its 13th season for sticking with there roots. And I read somewhere cory wanted glee too be like degrassi and doing this will honor him and glee would be the US version of degrassi. Because too be honest watching the new direction alumnis could only get you far but sticking with mckinley they can come up with more options because the writors don’t have too worry about the orginals and we can fall in love with the new characters finally.
I know I am in the minority, but I would be pretty bummed if we lost the underclassman characters.

I fast forward during the Lima parts. If it was all NY I would watch Thursdays and not just DVR it.
They’re not my favourite characters but I do love Marley, Kitty, Jake and Ryder so I too would like Glee to say in the Glee club at least a little bit.

Kitty is ok the rest are boring. Doesn’t mean I have a close mind. I just don’t think the actors or the writer have done a good job at creating interesting characters.
We’re closed minded because we watched last season and decided we don’t like the new characters? That makes no sense. Look up what “closed minded” means, because what we have are called opinions.
I don’t think people who don’t like them are closed-minded but I do think a lot of people went into Season 4 deciding they already hated them and didn’t give them a chance.
I was the opposite I was excited for the new kids except Unique cause her acting was so bad the season before. But it turned out all of their acting was bad except Kitty’s. The musical numbers were lack luster and the stories seems forced. I saw nothing comedic from the new ones either.
I watched one episode this season and gave up. if they moved the show to NY I would actually start watching again.
I agree with you. I like Kitty & Marley. I’d bring Puck on fulltime either way. I like Sue and don’t know how she would follow anyone to NYC. I might not be a HUGE fan of the underclassmen but I think the school local & the competition should be the focus again.
I’ve recently rewatched season 1 and what worked in the first season was not the side stories but the real performances & love for the music, the FUN of Glee, not just the drama. IMO.
But the new kids have shown they can’t deliver that. We have seen prom, elections, crushes and competitions. Why repeat that some more with lesser performers?

Yup. Rachel’s viewpoint was the most compelling in the pilot and should be the primary character as it wraps up. They (rightly) de-emphasized Shue which would be the only real continuity to another school year in Lima, even if Finn had stayed. The only natural storyline is to follow Rachel and her friends Kurt and Santana in NYC.
This so much. I want to see Kurt and Santana too but if they continue with NY getting 10 minutes someone will get less so just give less to Lima. With Finn gone Lima serves no purpose.
I’ve got to think that Ryan Murphy et al must have a few regrets regarding Glee. Someone someday will write an analysis on how such a bright show with sparkling writing, engaging music, talented and charismatic actors devolved so quickly. My personal take? A desire to keep the younger, music-buying segment of their audience engaged led to too much Blaine, too much pop, too much fan pandering which ultimately led to indifferent and sloppy show running. While the quality dropped measurably each season, Season 4 will always be the season that the wheels came off of Glee as evidenced by its terrible writing, lack of continuity and dismal character development.
Focusing solely on NYC is probably the best option for the show now, but quite frankly, it is too little, too late for me. While I wish the show, its crew and cast the best, Glee is simply no longer Glee without Cory Monteith. Not just because Monteith was one of the show’s most capable actors, but because Finn and Rachel’s story was the emotional core of the show. They were the metaphor for Glee and the reason I continued to watch the show (albeit considerably less enthusiastically last season.) It doesn’t really matter if they move the show to NYC and how many characters they “realistically” bring to the city, it’s simply no longer Glee to me.
I said it before and I’ll say it again: the problem originated at the beginning of Season 3 when it was “announced” which kids were Seniors and which were Juniors. It would’ve made more sense to have the original core group (Rachel, Mercedes, Tina, Artie and Kurt) as Freshman who had just come to McKinley and were joing the Glee Club w/Mr. Schue as the new director, then have Finn as a Sophmore b/c he was already the quaterback. Quinn would’ve been a Sophmore since she was captain of the Cheerios, but both Santana and Brittney could’ve been Freshman on the Cheerios. Puck could’ve been either a Freshman or Sophmore. Designating so many of the original cast as Seniors in the show’s third season really set them off on bad storyline choices which resulted in an uneven Season four and problems outlining this season and the upcoming last season. Of course the death of Cory has complicated matters, but the underlying story problems already existed based on this one bad decision in the beginning of Season three
They could have taken a page out of Vampire Diaries’ book and had each school year equal 2 seasons. Then nobody would have graduated so soon.
Not that the need to respect continuity has ever made them do anything, but they showed Kurt driving a big SVU his dad got him during the first season… so he had to be a sophomore in the first season. It also helped establish the characters – they weren’t just scared freshman transitioning to HS; they were kids who genuinely didn’t fit in.
Yes, I agree that the showrunners certainly didn’t have a good long term vision/plan for the show. Besides the botched graduation (having Kurt the same age as Finn and Puck really?) they also made a HUGE mistake in cementing Finn to Lima last season–I know they did it to anchor the McKinley story and support the newbies, but it totally changed the show’s original intent for him.
Since the pilot, we rooted for Finn, Rachel and the other Glee misfits to open themselves up to the power of music, find their true selves and get out of Lima. In the beginning, Finn’s story was just as important (and powerful) as Rachel’s. Rachel and Will (and later Kurt) recognized Finn’s talent and star quality and, through their eyes, we knew that Finn would find his way out of Lima through music (remember performing made Finn happy? remember New Directions needed Finn as much as Rachel to win their first Sectionals?) This was the intent and message through the first three seasons. When they used Finn as a plot device to anchor the McKinley story, they changed (downgraded) his dream and importance to the show. And the show suffered drastically.
I think Ryan Murphy got distracted by the shiny, splashy musical numbers and started to build the show around those performances and performers. What started as a well written show that used music to support and highlight the stories has essentially turned into a musical video. The reason Glee was so successful was because it had compelling stories brought to life by truly gifted actors (Lea, Cory, Matthew, Chris). Ironically, in changing the show’s focus it also betrayed some of the show’s most powerful first season messages: New Directions would win not because they were the best dancers/singers but because they were different and had heart (Acafellas and Pilot); and that they shouldn’t let the glitz/smoke distract from their True Colors (Hairography).
It’s really unfortunate that it took Cory’s death for Ryan Murphy to publicly admit his and Finn’s importance to the show. I, for one, will never forget (or forgive) him for essentially dissing Cory in his interviews during Season 2’s summer hiatus (the one where he said he had taken the time to discuss the upcoming graduation plot lines with Lea and Chris but not Cory).
tl:dr but that’s why I think Ryan et al must have regrets and why whatever changes they make to Glee will be too little, too late for me.
The announced in the Pilot episode that Rachel was a sophomore. They announced in the third episode of season 1 that Kurt was already 16. The only new information at the beginning of season 3 was that Artie, Tina, and Blaine were juniors, not seniors; they’d already locked themselves into the 3rd season = senior year for the other original characters.
This is so true. Glee is nothing without the dymanic fo Finn and Rachel. With Finn/Cory gone there is no story for many. What happened in season 4 was what killed the show. The newbies just don’t cut it. They are all poor imitations of the originals with the exception of Kitty who is so much better than her original. Moving the show to NYC isn’t going to save it especially if you had Sam and Blaine to the mix. The show for me ended at the end if season 3 and officially died July 13th.
Finn was a great character – a popular quarterback who really displayed vulnerability and his relationship with Rachel was great, but her character and her story were not solely about that relationship. People overlook that her drive to make it to Broadway is a consistent part of her character and can sustain the show going forward. Add in Kurt and Santana and you have a story. They just need to ditch Blaine. I don’t mind his character, but Kurt should have outgrown him by now.
I agree Rachel journey needs to finish and that is why I am still watching. Sadly she won’t have Finn by her side but her put her on that train to be a star so the show needs to have that one dream of his fulfilled.

While Finn/Cory will be missed and was of course an important part of Glee I don’t think that he or his relationship with Rachel were the emotional core of the show. In fact, I think the stories that really root and ground Glee are those of Rachel and Kurt. Both of them have been there from the start, and they are the two characters who have made the biggest journey so far (both individually and together). They’ve gone through so many ups and downs, but they’ve never lost faith, and they’ve always come out stronger in the end. They went from semi-enemies to friends in a way that was always believable, and it is easy to imagine them still being best friends when their are in their eighties. They are also two of only a handful of characters on this show who are actually well-developed and well-rounded overall. Kurt and Rachel are the heart and soul of Glee, and I think Fox is well aware of that considering that these are the two characters they use for almost all promotional purposes (in season 4 they even used them to advertise episodes that they weren’t even in!).
Are they finally going to listen to what the fans want?? Shocking!

I am a Kurtsie and I think that Sam is a cutie Pie… and Blaine is charmingly great.
I don’t care about Sam but Blaine is a huge part of the show, very popular, fun and charming and talented, and part of the only remaining power couple. It would be crazy to get rid of him.
It might be crazy but it would make the show so much more enjoyable. He is average at best. He actually brings many scene down and his vocal ranges is limited.

That is exactly the truth about Glee since season 4 started. I just hope Blaine goes to China. Sam goes to clown school. Artie goes to NY Academy of Film Arts. Mercedes goes to NY to try to get off off Broadway. Or be a club singer. Adam Lambert could stay as long as he would like to. I love Rachel, Kurt and Santana as roommates. This scenario for Glee could become some of the best and fresh and new fun for Glee. Make a new start for a new run for Glee. New stories, new angles, new music, new backdrops, new possibilities. the possibilities are endless. Maybe, a few more years than 2. All depends. Just so sad that Cory is gone to not be a part of it. For sure, if he were still here and Glee were to make this an instant decision, I would start watching Glee again. As of now, Glee is a bore. Blaine, Blee, Sam, Blam, Marley, Jarley, and all those other Lima names turn my stomach. Eighty percent Lima and 20 percent New York will not bring me back. I don’t care if they sing the more of The Beatles music. If Blaine sings 1 more song, then Glee’s shown that there is preference’s shown toward certain actors and their characters. Blaine, Marley in particular. Those 2 are the 2 I least care for.

Besides Darren being a mediocre actor, is his character Blaine only exist by his relationship with other characters (Kurt, Sam, Tina etc), he never stood out an individual character. During season 3, Ian Brennan once ask Darren if he can talk about his personal life since the writers are interested to expand Blaine has a multicultural race with successful immigrant parents
but secretly staying illegally (remember that controversial Arizona Immigration Law). But the writers were quite surprise he just said “No, thanks” the reason he doesn’t want the writers to make fun of his life. So the writers just went to the Matt Bomer storyline (again relationship story with another character).

Please. The writers have spent the last two seasons trying to recapture the appeal and charisma of Blaine/Darren Criss with new actors and characters. Below average? You’re so full of it. I agree with everything you said! And for those people saying well the promoted the Newbies it has to mean they love them and have plans for them. All it means is Ryan needed them for Cory/Finn’s SL. Without Finn they aren’t needed.
Those fans don’t understand that Ryan does not have to keep the newbies just cause they singed them. I agree they were singed cause Cory had a big part of Lima. With Finn gone and others graduating Lima is a wasteland.
More like Finn supported their stories. While he was an anchor for the McKinley side he certainly wasn’t a lead. He served as a touchpoint to when the series was popular but most of the time his on screen time dealt with holding the hands of the newbies.
Except Ryan said he had much more planned for him ins season 5.

That would be great but Starchild and Dani won’t be staying long. Their actors are special guest stars. Once their contracts are up, Glee should focus on finding talented unknowns and making creative new characters rather than copies of the originals. But Klainepezberry in New York definitely needs to be the focus of the show.

I have been watching Glee from the beginning and I definitely care most about the original characters and prefer the NYC story lines… that being said, if they totally eliminate Lima, that means no more McKinley, Mr. Schu, Sue, Emma… that sounds very weird to me. Also, how logical is it for everyone to have moved to NYC? Not very.
Emma is already being written out, according to Jayma. Schu has been useless for some time now. And Jane Lynch is better than what they are writing for Sue recently (i.e. the past few seasons).
Giving how wacky Glee can be at times I’m certain they can come up with a reason for Sue at least to turn up in NYC.
This should have been done from the start when Rachel, Santana, Kurt, etc graduated. But Ryan was too stubborn for that. Glad he’s finally beginning to realise no one cares about the new kids. Or Chord. Or Blaine (except teenage straight girls who fetishize gay boys).

I think Chris is more dissapointed that he character has been reduce to Blaine’s boyfriends instead of exploring other storylines likes in season 1 and 2.
Chris should not whine about how his character isn’t getting enough lines. That’s poor form. As an actor you perform to the script and do your best.
Not liking Kurt’s fiance who cheated on him and is shoved down our throat doesn’t make anyone into a bully or a hater. Guilt tripping and shaming people by saying Chris would be disappointed is ridiculous. Disliking a fictional character is not a valid reason to be called a hater, imo. These kinds of articles are meant to stir opinions, good or bad. So of course people might not like a performance, an episode, the direction a show has taken, even an actor’s interpretation, it’s perfectly normal. blaine isn’t the scale by which you judge if a person is descent or hateful. It’s just a character you can love or abhor. I don’t like him, no one is hurting, the world keeps spinning and you should be happy since blaine will remain the focus of the show until the end anyway.

Agree 100%. I loved Blaine at first in season 2 and I guess 3 but he definitely has annoyed me more recently, especially at the end of last season (But I still sort of like him). I sort of wished they gave him a story line that doesn’t revolve around gay marriage or Kurt and Sam (maybe something that involved his parents??) but if he goes to New York, I won’t be mad, as long as they give him something new to do.
Also he is one of my favourite singers on the show, but they should let other people sing more often instead of mainly him (like give songs to Artie I love his voice!)

I like Chord Overstreet’s impersonations. I’ve felt for a while now that the best version of the show would be a musical-comedy sitcom following Rachel, Kurt and Santana while Chord Overstreet puts his impersonation skills to work and plays random supporting characters in each episode.

Avery, I follow a wide range of people on tumblr and twitter, some of them Blaine/Klaine stans, some of them not. I usually don’t automatically unfollow people for it when there are other things I like about their blogs. I’ve been apart of the Glee fandom from the beginning, it’s not hard to figure out the fandom demographics of each character.
Is there anything wrong with straight girls liking a gay character? No. But as a gay guy, it gets annoying when my sexual identity becomes fetishized and marginalized into nothing more than fodder for fan-fiction. Obviously not all straight women do this, nor all straight women who like Glee or like Blaine, but there are large subsects of fan culture that do this.

Does anyone care about mr. Shue and sue? I know it’s hard without Finn, but really, a high school glee club (okay, show choir) is why it’s called Glee. So are we to dwell in the dumps with Kurt and Rachel? Okay, really, I don’t care because Puck was the only reason I watched anyway.
Lots of shows based on high school kids eventually move on from the original premise. How well it’s done is usually where things make or break it, so to speak. When you base something on teenagers, sooner or later you have to grow with the natural progression of growing up or your show ceases to exist because there are only so many stories that can play out in a high school/teenage setting.
But it’s *called* Glee. It’s supposed to be about a high school glee club, not be a sorry Rent knockoff.

They threw away the chance to do this last year when Cory was still around and they could have shown the initial journey of the 3 main characters — Rachel, Kurt, and Finn — going from fearing they’d be stuck in a small town to finding their dreams and proving to themselves they aren’t Lima Losers. At this point, after such a waste of last year, it’s hard to care much or have much energy, enthusiasm, or interest for anything else they do.
No matter where they set it, they’re just going to keep doing music videos featuring Blaine instead of telling interesting, compelling stories. So, whatever.

Season 4 and so far this season that is true. Truth hurts. Glee becomes too commercialized and repetitive, almost carbon copies of videos. There isn’t much innovative, creative, fresh, and non current event. That was a Glee standard in the beginning. I do’t care to rematch videos of some of the best stars in music today where the singing is subpar. That is my assessment of Glee’s talent now. It is nowhere as good as it once was.
They should have done this last season instead of wasting time on the new underclassmen.
