The Karate Kid is moving to a bigger dojo.
Cobra Kai is relocating to Netflix after two seasons on YouTube, TVLine has learned. Under the terms of the deal, Seasons 1 and 2 of the Karate Kid sequel series will be available on Netflix later this year, with the all-new Season 3 to follow at a to-be-determined date.
Debuting last May 2018, Cobra Kai was a breakout hit for YouTube, notching a Season 2 renewal days after its premiere. YouTube initially intended to launch Season 3 — which has already been shot — last fall; its decision to ditch original scripted favor in favor of unscripted programming prompted the move to Netflix.
Set decades after the original Karate Kid films, Cobra Kai stars William Zabka, reprising his role as former bully Johnny Lawrence. Now firmly in middle age and with nothing to show for it, Johnny reopens his old Cobra Kai karate dojo in a bid to get his life back together, taking a band of misfit youths under his wing. Ralph Macchio is also back as Johnny’s arch-rival Daniel LaRusso, now a rich and successful car dealer. Martin Kove, who played Johnny’s Cobra Kai mentor Kreese in the original films, returned as a full-time cast member in Season 2 as well.
In a statement, EPs Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg thanked Cobra Kai’s producing studio, Sony Pictures Television, for “finding us a new home where we can not only continue the series, but also explore opportunities to further expand The Karate Kid universe.”
Added Netflix’s VP of original series: “The appeal of The Karate Kid saga is timeless, and Cobra Kai picks up right where it left off without missing a beat…. We can’t wait to introduce a new generation of fans to Cobra Kai and are thrilled to be its new home around the world.”
I’ve wanted to watch this, but could not do another streaming service. This makes me happy now that I can watch it!
SAME
Me too
Yes! I hope Daniel and Johnny team up to take Kreese down
I would rather see Impulse being renewed for the next season and moved to Netflix.
thank you!!!!!!! came here to say this
Me too.
Me three!
Me too.
oh no, impulse was terrible
they took Jumper and ruin it , too much PC and feminize
As expected. Though, I wonder how it will play with Netflix typical 3-5 seasons and done.
Well it shouldn’t go on for too long. As much as I love my favorite shows, most of them have gone on for too long and missed the mark for a good conclusion and either fizzled out (Stranger Things is in severe danger of going there) or outright became bad (looking at you, HIMYM!).
I agree but what I was really meaning was that I think I recall seeing somewhere that the creator has a 6-7* season show planned out, will Netflix want to keep it around given that I don’t think they have original series run more than 5 seasons typically. Other than OITNB and House of Cards afaik.
Also, while I welcome the news of Cobra Kai moving to Netflix, I am slightly concerned with what other shows Netflix plans to scrap in order to balance the books, so to speak, especially with the likelihood of (at-least) another season of Lucifer (which is not cheap to produce) potentially on the way. I just hope that some of the smaller originals don’t suffer either budget cuts or just being canned as a result.
Netflix picked up Longmire from A&E after season 3 and aired it till season 6. Cobra Kai should be fine.
Cobra Kai never dies!
Yay!!!
Absolutely love the show.
I wonder how long it will go on for before Netflix cancels it.
This is best news I heard all year
This is great news – I’ve been wanting to see this since it came out.
Not too thrilled… I don’t subscribe to Netflix… Now I have no choice if I want to see season 3….
Netflix still does free trials — you could time it so your trial coincides with the release date.
S1&2 are audible on dvd st retailers like WalMart, maybe Target & Amazon
You can´t be that poor not to afford Netflix. Seriously get job man, stop partying/drinking/smoking so you can afford it and get something nice in your life.
You must be a young single guy with no responsibilities if you think you have to be an unemployed partier to be unable to afford some of the extras in life.. maybe this guy is raising a family, putting kids thru college, taking care of his aged parents..maybe he has more important things to spend money on than than Netflix and partying…
Netflix is like $10 a MONTH. That’s nothing. Unless this person literally has NO money left over for expenditures, that’s basically a couple lattes.
Netflix is the perfect place to move it to. They’ll give it the proper budget to produce the show right.
I can’t wait!!! This show is awesome! Thank You Netflix for picking this show up!
Good move by Netflix. This show is surprisingly very good and a wonderful followup from the movies
That’s good news! Think it will broaden their audience.
That’s great.. wish they would pick up Impulse as well.
Oh man this just made me so excited!!! Honest to God one of the best series/revival/spin off/continuation I’ve ever seen! I hope other producers/directors/show runners take note: this is how you do a true successor to a movie franchise. Hits all the right spots in terms of nostalgia and storytelling. This series knows exactly what Karate Kid fans want to see. Doesn’t talk down to older fans and also has enough appeal to bring on new fans. So pumped for the next season!!!
A highly underrated show. Glad to see it on Netflix. But I’d be more excited by a blu-Ray release of the first two seasons.
The first two seasons are on dvd( Blu-ray would be better but it is what it is)at WalMart & Amazon
It is on DVD, but that’s unacceptable to me. If it’s not available in a format superior (Or at least on par) to the streaming version, then I have no interest. I suppose, for me, it’s the principal of the matter. Why accept something subpar when much more is possible.
Great…another series for Netflix to screw up and cancel after it starts to gain traction just like every other series or show they’ve come out with
I hope that isn’t the case, but you could be right, Look what Netflix did to “Lucifer”. Renewed it & then cancelled it at Season 6. Hopefully Netflix can come to their senses & renew both “Cobra Kai” & “Lucifer” for several more seasons. But this has always been Netflix’s downfall. Cancelling shows before they have a chance to truly begin. Luckily, both shows already have a fanbase & both fanbases might start campaigning for additional seasons if they wanted to.
Yassssssss!!!! I absolutely love this show. I’m so excited for season three to come out, and now will watch 1&2 again while waiting for 3, thank you to all involved for getting this moved to Netflix!!!
Yassss!!! Thank you for all involved for making this happen!!
Yes! Love Cobra Kai….so glad I can continue watching. So excited!!!
I have seen the first two seasons of “Cobra Kai.” It’s an excellent continuation of “The Karate Kid” Saga, but I can’t help but feel that it will be canceled after the third season. This is Netflix’s habit. To cancel things before they begin. Hopefully, that won’t be the case here. But don’t be surprised if they do cancel it.
