The CW’s entire freshman class is officially graduating to the 2019-20 TV season: Rookie series All American and In the Dark have both been renewed for Season 2, TVLine has learned.
They’re joined by Roswell, New Mexico and The 100, which were also picked up on Wednesday for Season 2 and Season 7, respectively. With those four renewals, The CW is officially bringing back its entire scripted lineup, including all of its newbie series. Ten other shows — including The Flash, Riverdale, Charmed and, well, everything else — received additional seasons back in January.
That said, The CW will still have some scheduling space to fill in the year ahead. The network will soon lose Jane the Virgin and iZombie after their final seasons (in addition to the recently ended Crazy Ex-Girlfriend), while veteran dramas Supernatural and Arrow will both be heading into farewell runs of their own this fall.
“As we begin to plan for the 2019-2020 season, we’re thrilled to have this roster of 14 exceptionally creative and distinctive series, including all five first-year shows, as the foundation on which to continue to build the multiplatform future of The CW,” network president Mark Pedowitz said. “One of our key long-term goals has been to continually add more original programming all year round, especially in midseason and summer, and with these returning shows and the new series we’ll order as we get closer to the May upfront, next season on The CW is shaping up to be our most robust year round schedule yet.”
All American averaged a 0.22 demo rating and 670,000 total viewers across its 16-episode run, respectively ranking 12th and 13th out of The CW’s 15 dramas this season. A very recent premiere, In the Dark thus far is pulling a 0.2 along with 760,000 viewers, ranking 13th and 11th among the network’s dramas.
All of Wednesday’s renewals, including All American and In the Dark, have been added to our 2019 Renewal Scorecard. Your thoughts on the pickups? Drop ’em in a comment below!
I don’t know how the CW stays afloat with these kinds of business practices, but God bless them for it.
I guess with three of their shows ending voluntarily this season, they didn’t feel pressured to make more cuts.
I am surprised but CW seems to keep low rated shows Roswell and all Americans are pretty low and I doubt they will retain more audience more likely it will go down but I wish them luck
Roswell pull ratings in line with CW’s median.
Yes to All American. Not an episode I did not like I would be heartbroken if it didn’t. It could tomorrow!!!!
That part. So happy
I’m glad All American has been renewed. We didn’t miss an episode last season. I love this show. It’s worth watching.
All American isn’t the most inspirational and motivating show ever. Not to forget how heart warming it is. This show must be continued. I have watched it not once completly, but twice. I loved it the second time as much as I didn’t the first time.
It is inspirational & poignant
Powerful in many aspects
Loved it. Powerful
I’m with you. I just watched the 1st season of All American. It had me sucked in from the first episode to the last. I can’t wait for the new season to come out. They left us with an overwhelming feeling of wanting to find out what happens. Is Dillon Coach Baker’s or Cory’s son. I can’t wait for the new season.
All American is a fantastic show. Cw audience must not like black shows or somethin cause it’s better than almost everything on cw.
Im with yah! I love a lot of shows on there but nothing Beats All American. (When it comes to nonfiction….)
For me it’s not a “Black” show thing, I just don’t care for Football. (I’ve had multiple people tell me to try it, much like Friday Night Lights, just doesn’t interest me, same with Mob Shows.) — I however love genre programming so I twig to almost everything else CW does. (Aliens, Angels, Demons, Witches, Vampires, Werewolves, Monsters, Superheroes, & Sci-Fi.
I don’t think All American had a big marketing push which is part of the issue. I just found out about the show when it popped up on my Netflix last week.
Yes, it seems a lot of people have watched now that they have seen that it is on Netflix. Hopefully it picked up enough fans and more people watch next season.
After binge watching on Netflix. I’m sure fans created there will be on board
your so right
I think they make most of their money in the secondary market and streaming.
Many of the CW shows are very popular internationally. The international streaming and broadcast fees they collect probably more than makes up for the show’s production costs. Plus, CW is owned by CBS and Warner Brothers, so they can balance out any losses from The CW from their other ventures.
International sales have saved shows like Dynasty. I doubt All-American did much internationally but apparently it has done decently on Netflix.
I don’t think All-American has a global Netflix deal that Riverdale and Dynasty have.
It doesn’t.
All American was the best series by far for me, hope season 2 wil be coming soon.
Same for me. I don’t watch any of those shows listed above, but I WILL be watching All American. It’s a shame, I didn’t find out about it until I seen it on Netflix. I love football movies/shows.
Happy about this.
The best network ever.
YUP!!!!
I have been saying all along that I thought AA would get a S2.
Pleasantly surprised by these renewals.. I assume some of them will have shorter runs as they mix and match through the year…
To me, this sounds a warning for the future of Flash and LOT. It is as if the CW anticipates the looming end of both shows in the near future. Ditto Superwoman, a show unlikely to continue once the cast is in line for larger raises in a few years. I think the CW is sort of rejiggering to make sure it is ready for the post Arrowverse world. WB (a corporate parent) of the CW is probably going to launch massive resets of its big comic characters, exclusive of Wonder Woman, who will be the center piece of their rebooted comic book universe. Given that likely reboot, I think that WB will want competing IP off the air when the reboots get going for real.
.
Further, I think the CW has grown to like the idea of “shorter” broadcast runs, of 10-15ish eps running (largely) uninterrupted from start to finish. Obviously, there will be a few interruptions, around holidays or “event” TV on other outlets, but you all get my point. That over 16-17 weeks the CW will be able to air an entire season of a show. If they’ve got huge successes, they’ll show them the full 20+ eps in the more traditional style. But the CW viewership, while small, is focused. Advertisers may not reach a huge number of folks, but they do reach a large subset of young people who have specific tastes. This makes them very valuable for movie ads, or youth oriented products in a variety of areas. There is incredible value in this.
I doubt WB is gonna reboot their properties completely.. as Aquaman and WW are both doing well and they seem to be keeping the Suicide Squad properties going… on the TV side they have the DC Universe shows doing well… and the Arrowverse stuff is popular. With Arrow being replaced by Batwoman and the crisis coming up I think the other shows are safe for a bit.. except maybe Legends which I’ve been expecting to end at some point soon.
I am so on board with their shorter seasons though. Honestly, the shows that have the shorter seasons seem so much better because they don’t have as many hours to fill. The story is tighter because it has to be. I wish more networks would adopt this practice.
Agree. I watch a lot of British and European tv on various streaming services. Most of them are 6-10 episodes. It’s perfect
Sounds like a bit of a stretch.. I wouldn’t read that much into it to be honest.
AA should get fall Friday Night Lights treatment at 8, pushing Dynasty to 9.
Dynasty is the one show on the network that is darn near unwatchable… AA started strong and then kindof struggled to the ending… hope they can pull it back together next season.
I beg to differ. Dynasty is such a campy guilty pleasure of a tv show to watch. Internationally, this show has a lot of success.
Happy All American got renewed for Season 2! Thank you The CW!
Good to hear about All-American!
Very happy about Roswell and In the Dark. I assumed Roswell would be renewed, but In the Dark is such a very different show than anything else on the network, that I had my doubts about its prospects.
I loved Roswell New Mexico from the first episode. I couldn’t get enough and ended up watching each and every episode a second time. Max and Liz have such romantic chemistry ! Am so happy it got renewed and can’t wait for its return. The entire cast is fantastically sexy too. Just thought I should mention that too.
I’m loving In the Dark, so them getting a renewal so early is awesome!
I wish Hellcats got as much consideration when it was on. Perhaps the CW is learning from their history of 1 and done for new shows. I haven’t watched anything new on the CW in years because I don’t want to get into a show that will be canceled after 1 season on a cliffhanger. I’m sure fans of The Secret Circle feel the same way. I do watch Dynasty, but only because I wasn’t invested in it so if it got cancelled I wouldn’t care. I am glad it was renewed though.
*I haven’t watched almost anything new on the CW. Dynasty is the exception and I only watched a few episodes of the first season live.
I’ve always hated that CW did HellCats and The Secret Circle dirty like that
‘The Tomorrow People’ was screwed over too.
Name a show starring Peyton List that HASN’T been cancelled.
This is soooo true, but I’ve liked almost every show she has starred in so you better believe I am still mad about Frequency!!
Still mad about The Secret Circle and The Tomorrow People
I am surprised that they both got renewed. I’m really liking In the Dark but was worried that it wouldn’t be renewed. I dropped All American like halfway through. It wasn’t bad but I just think I can’t watch a straight teen drama anymore. I might be getting too old for them. However, give me a teen show with supernatural or sci-fi elements and I’m there.
With so many shows ending this year and next, they really didn’t have a choice. They should pick up a version of Timeless, reboot it somehow. It would fit great on their network, IMO. I’m super happy about Roswell getting another there season, it got better with each episode!
Ugh, I’m gonna have to stop dictating…it always messes stuff up 😑
OMG ALL AMERICAN! How in the world did it get renewed?!?!?! It wasn’t just fractional.. I think the show had like 500k live viewers at its finale. with a 0.2 rating.
I loved the show, I thought it was pretty good surprisingly, but wow!!!!
Wherever the All American party is celebrating this renewal, I want to go to there!
Me too!!! And it is NOT a teen drama. It covers a lot of great issues
Hopefully Nancy drew and Katy Keene still get picked up
I wasn’t expecting Roswell NM to be renewed because the ratings were pretty low this S1. Hopefully, the writers will keep Michael & Maria together. But I have a feeling that S2 will have lower ratings than S1.
Yet back in 2014 they cancelled The Tomorrow people which had much better story that half of the shows lol

I really hope Charmed is not sent to Friday. It would make more sense for AA to go there. Charmed should be paired with Legacies.
I expect 2-3 new shows on the fall schedule. Top candidates: Nancy Drew, Katy Keene and Lost Boys. Mid season newbies: Batwoman, Glamorous and Jane the Novella.
You know, The Flash is one of my DVR’d shows (that I love) and I’m just watching the episode Godspeed and have to say…. I have never cared for Iris or Nora and this episode is almost exclusively those two. It’s hard to keep watching this one.
I too love The Flash, and most of this season has been hard to watch, because it’s all been Nora, Nora, Nora. That, and Jesse L Martin being on medical leave for his back; I really, really missed him on the show. I hope he’s feeling much better and is able to return for all of next season.
You guys forgot to mention that supernatural was renewed for a final season in your gallery slideshow!
I guess something has to be paired with Dynasty on Fridays. Even Dynasty itself might be 13 episode.
Shouldn’t have cancelled I Zombie
iZombie wasn’t cancelled, it was always going to have five seasons.
I zombie was said to be only this set amount. Rob Thomas had the story of how to start and how to finish and main stories in between… then he wrote individual episode to fit- he is amazing- he writes like a book , beginning, ending… chapter plots and details.
He wrote Veronica Mars the same way- EXCEPT- they cancelled the show after season 3, he had seen Veronica heading to the FBI. (2009)
Us Marshmallows were so upset, this was before social Media is what it is now, and a few years later a kickstarter campaign was started and Rob Thomas and cast were able to make a movie for the fans 6 years after the cancelled show ended.
Fans are still around wanting more – and now Hulu renewed and just released a smaller season 4. Thomas and main actress Kristen Bell both always say they will always make more for whoever wants it.
And now we will be getting Lost Boys written by him as well this fall!
So thrilled that the CW finally renewed All American! This is a terrific show with breakout performances by Daniel Ezra and Bre-Zee. My husband and i are in our 50’s and we love it!
Yeah, who knew Bre-Zee could act? Good, at that!
She’s great! She was on Empire too, I think 2 seasons ago, and was really good on that too.
