Only Murders in the Building EP Serves Up 6 Season 3 Teasers, Says Brighter Days Await Selena Gomez's Mabel

TVLINE | This is the first murder that takes place outside the Arconia. Moving forward, can we assume murders need only take place in a building, not the building?
That is an assumption you can make, absolutely. That is a central question… and I am excited to have an answer.

TVLINE | Before the curtain rises, Charles warns Ben to “stay away from her.” Is the “her” that he’s referring to a character we’ve already met?
Oh, I would love to tell you that. I really would love to tell you that. But I also like that question being posed in the minds of viewers in between Seasons 2 and 3. I would just say this: It is definitely a question that we asked ourselves, and we sprang forward with a very definite answer.

TVLINE | At the play, we see Mabel seated with Oliver, Lucy and Joy — but not Alice. Should we read into Cara Delevingne’s absence in that scene?
Not too much. We make a one-year time jump there, so there’s a bit of a reset. We’ll have the audience play catchup and ask what’s going on with all of them, and what have they been up to without a murder to solve. Each character will have had their own specific journey in that year, and Mabel’s journey is probably the most unexpected in certain ways, because Charles and Oliver have been doing the play. Her world has moved forward.

There are so few people I’d want to say, “Oh, they’ve moved on.” There are characters in all our spheres, even when they do terrible things to each other — like Jan or Teddy Dimas — who will come back around, but it all has to be narratively led. So it’s all based on where we want Mabel to go that determines which connections hold and who we will see in Season 3. Alice’s storyline [resolved itself] in a rather sweet way, with the beginning of a reparation in that friendship [with Mabel]. I like the chumminess that’s there. But I don’t think we’re aiming towards any more of a love relationship.

TVLINE | The police wanted Charles, Oliver and Mabel to steer clear of the Bunny Folger investigation. But now their names have been cleared, and they’re heroes twice over. Will the authorities welcome their help in Season 3?
It would be a situation where it’s called upon them [to help], now that they’ve been successful. There will definitely be a need that is felt. Emotionally, the pull back to each other certainly feels right, but there are a lot of things going on in their lives that will be in conflict with that. Season 3 is dealing with a lot that has changed in the past year.

TVLINE | So much of Mabel’s journey has been about overcoming trauma. Now that she’s cleared her name in Bunny’s murder and learned to process her grief in a healthy way, will she be able to leave her “Bloody Mabel” past behind?
Aren’t you looking forward to that? I am! I really believe so. I talked to Selena Gomez yesterday on a Zoom and walked her through the Season 3 plan for Mabel, and she was jumping up and down. One of the headlines is, there’s brightness… a different color. She has, over the last two seasons, been able to sort of take that shawl of heaviness off of her a bit…. There are certain new pressures ahead of her, and questions that she is asking herself about her own life, but she’s got a much more optimistic viewpoint.

TVLINE | Season 2 introduced Charles’ sorta-stepdaughter Lucy. But we still haven’t met Lucy’s mother/Charles’ ex Emma, or Emma’s new husband. Any plans to introduce them in Season 3?
Charles is so focused on Lucy, and he’s come to terms with [Emma moving on], so no. I think the relationship with Lucy is really sweet and has progressed nicely in Season 2, so that’s the one we’ll keep on track with [moving forward].
