If you were surprised by Onomatopoeia’s unmasking on last week’s Superman & Lois, actor Chad L. Coleman has one question for you: Why?
“I told them it just seems a little too obvious,” Coleman tells TVLine with a laugh, emphasizing that Peia (aka Bruno Mannheim’s wife) is literally in the villain’s name. “But it worked, so kudos to the writers. People really didn’t get it until they got it.”
Speaking of Peia, Tuesday’s episode flashed back to happier (albeit more violent) times for the couple, who gained power in Hob’s Bay by taking out a powerful crime boss named Moxie. But even in their more criminal moments, the couple was worth rooting for — and still might be.
“Bruno is a complex man operating in a very gray area,” Coleman says. “He may be tough and intense, but his humanity shines through with his love of his wife, his community and his son. People can get behind that. The more complex the character is, the richer and more rewarding their journey is.”
Speaking of Bruno’s family, the final moments of this week’s episode revealed that not only is Peia his wife, but Matteo is also their son!
“We feel like a family,” Coleman says. “It’s great casting when you see us together. It makes perfect sense.”
Naturally, a meeting of Matteo and Natalie’s parents is in order, and Coleman says the big moment of realization will be worth the wait: “Oh, you should be very excited. Pandora’s Box is gonna fly wide open, and oh my gosh, I can’t wait. Just buckle up, buddy.”
Elsewhere on this week’s Superman & Lois…
* Sarah rejected the very notion of spending time with her dad’s new girlfriend — that is, until she discovered some fun gummies in Chrissy’s purse. Suddenly Kyle’s Coachella-attending lady friend got a whole lot cooler in his daughter’s eyes.
* Blissfully unaware of Matteo’s parentage, Natalie invited her new boyfriend over to have lunch with John Henry, and it did not go well. Fortunately, John had Lana to talk him out of being too overprotective. And don’t think all that flirting went unnoticed!
* After conveying the severity of her illness to Jordan and Jonathan, Lois explained that she isn’t going to try Kryptonian technology against her cancer because [1] it wouldn’t be fair to those without it, and [2] it would be incredibly risky.
Your thoughts on this week’s many twists and turns? And did you predict the Matteo–Bruno connection before it was revealed? Whatever’s on your mind, drop it in a comment below.
damn her name really is OnomatoPoEIA’.
the son thing was obvious from his second appearance
I had a feeling, in tonight’s episode, that Matteo’s mother was Peia. The way he was talking about her.
As for Peia being Bruno’s wife, I already knew from an episode summary for this week’s episode.
I ship all the couples…but the boyfriend twist was something everyone saw coming a mile away; especially after last week’s reveal.
.
It just seems to be a bit too soapy with everyone being so subtly or not so subtly related or connected to everyone else….can’t wait to see that family dinner 😜
Yes Matteo had to be Bruno’s son. The only other alternative was that he was John Henry’s sister’s son and then he and Natalie would be first cousins from different Earths which would be too strange.
Okay, the son thing was obvious after figuring out the Peia thing, but that its purely an innocent thing between Matteo and Nat is actually very interesting because Bruno and Peia are going to be as surprised by who Nat is (as will John Henry who can’t play the game as well as Bruno and Clark can since I am pretty sure Bruno knows who Clark is). But I liked how we Lex name dropped because its going to likely be that Lois thinks she has Bruno when Lex makes his appearance which will make the Manheims and the Kents be on the same side for a bit.
What I found interesting and not really explained was that Peia apparently had her killer powers before Bruno took over. I had assumed they were a side effect from whatever special cancer treatment Bruno has been developing with the other villains, but that does not seem to be the case at all.
@Jrex: So did I.
me three, and now I think it’s the other way around.
Love this show. Strange narrative on twitter where people are annoyed that Superman is not using his tech for Lois. They seem to think he should force Lois to use it and they lack the comprehension that Lois is a individual who decides herself. Also one thing a cancer patient has control over is the decision on the treatments they do or do not try.
@alouglin: Don’t forget what Clark said. It wouldn’t be fair to use it on Lois and not everyone else.
Yes, but the main takeaway is that it could kill her and she doesn’t want to use it. Does anyone who has watched this show think that this version of Clark would say no to Lois if she wanted to try it? Not a chance.
What should have been stressed more strongly to the boys is that kryptonian technology might well have killed Lois, not whether it would be ‘fair.’
I have a feeling writers are trying to hint at a future romance between John and Lana.
Way beyond hinting at this point. They are all but a couple already. Moreover, because Kyle is dating she is free and clear to as well. Probably see the first kiss in a few episodes.
… she isn’t going to try Kryptonian technology against her cancer because [1] it wouldn’t be fair to those without it, and [2] it would be incredibly risky.
If I had nothing more to lose I would not give a flying f…ogel about [1] but try and save my own ass no matter what.
The episode last night was a little light on superhero stuff but heavy on drama
Absolutely. It was made clear that Kryptonian tech might kill Lois. The fact that anyone would begin to suggest using it isn’t ‘fair’ is ridiculous…at least in the real world the rest of us inhabit.
Peia being married to Bruno is a great way to add complexity to the dynamic. In a way, Lois and Bruno are similar. They both married extraordinary people and used the gifts of those people to raise to the next level professionally. Lois used Clark to protect her while she investigated the baddest baddies. Bruno used Peia as a meta assassin to help him take over the Bay. At the same time you have both Clark and Bruno who could go to extraordinary measures to save their wives, but Clark is unwilling while Bruno is. Bruno will push the boundaries of medical science using alien DNA, while Clark won’t use alien tech to try and save her (because he isn’t willing to share it with earth.) The whole dynamic will be further complicated by Lex Luther getting out of prison next week. I could see a Clark, Bruno, JHI, team up to take down the real big bad by seasons end.
.
P.S I find it interesting that Clark and Lois are sympathizing with a mob boss. He murdered DOD personnel, the former mayor, and many many more people to accomplish his goals. Does having a sick wife justify experimenting on people? What about all the other crimes he and Peia committed. It is a slippery slope the writers must avoid.
I don’t know how they resolve Lois’s cancer realistically unless they do a big time jump at some point. The best she can hope for in the short term is remission with the possibility of it returning later. Maybe they do kill Lois and somehow John Henry’s wife survived on her world and makes it to the Superman and Lois world. That would be a twist. Or the Arrowverse Lois makes it over to the the Superman and Lois world.
There’s still Lois from the Bizzaro world too! We already saw the bizarro Superman in Bruno’s labs.
This is a question not a statement. Are you sure that is true of her type of breast cancer? Isn’t it possible that with chemo and surgery that the cancer doesn’t come back? Also what are the likely remission timelines with inflammatory breast cancer. Might she have 25-30 years before it recurs, or are we talking 5-10 years? I am asking because this is way outside my knowledge base.
I was surprised about her and their son. I never read the comic books, so I have no expectations.
