Anna Faris‘ Mom departure will not stand in the way of Christy Plunkett’s happy ending.
Fans of the long-running CBS comedy can rest easy knowing that Bonnie’s daughter won’t be pushed in front of a moving train, squashed by a baby grand piano, or worse, offed by kung-fu coupon. She also won’t succumb to any one of the many vices she kicked on her seven-year journey with sobriety.
In an interview with TVLine, series co-creator Gemma Baker assures us that viewers will in fact be “satisfied” with Christy’s “new path” when all is revealed in the Season 8 premiere (airing Thursday, Nov. 5, at 9/8c).
“One of the beautiful things about recovery is that quite often people’s lives get bigger and better than they could have imagined,” Baker says. “And that will be Christy’s experience. We are pretty sure that our audience, many of whom have been rooting for Christy since the pilot, will be happy for her and satisfied by her new path.”
Meanwhile, with her daughter out of the apartment, Bonnie finds herself at a crossroads. “Christy’s absence will have a ripple effect on Bonnie throughout the season,” Baker says of Allison Janney’s character. “Part of Bonnie’s journey this year will be to figure out what she wants to do now that she’s actually grown up.”
Part of that journey will involve Adam, as husband and wife adjust to an empty nest. “With all the alone time, [Bonnie and Adam] discover that they actually really like each other,” Baker teases. “So much so that they try to help another couple achieve their level of happiness to mixed results.”
Among the couples that may or may not need Bonnie and Adam’s help are Jill and Andy, who hit a rough patch early on in Season 8.
“Jill’s desire to move their relationship along causes some friction,” Baker says. “Out of this conflict, Jill will have an opportunity to learn about who she truly is and what she wants.”
Meanwhile, a new relationship will expose “a different side” of Marjorie, says Baker, as Christy’s former sponsor “falls in love with a new fella” for the first time since the death of her second husband, Victor. In turn, “We will also get to see a different side of our other ladies,” including Wendy and Tammy, “when [it’s revealed] they don’t like him.”
News that Faris was walking away from her role as Christy, in order to pursue other opportunities, broke on Sept. 4. At the time, Faris released a statement which in part read, “The past seven years on Mom have been some of the most fulfilling and rewarding of my career. I’m so thankful to Chuck [Lorre], the writers, and my amazing castmates for creating a truly wonderful work experience.”
How do you think Mom will resolve Christy’s storyline, based on the hints above? And what are your hopes for the Anna Faris-less Season 8?
While I do like the other ladies and Adam, I think Christy’s absence is going to leave a huge hole in the show. It was bad enough when they wrote out Christy’s kids but this will be tough.
The writing for her character was getting goofier and goofier. They’d explored the relationship as far as they could. The remaining folks can carry the show.
I totally agree it was becoming obnoxious, and she was the reason I started watching the show, but Bonnie, Tammy and Jill stole the show!!
Omg!!!! You are so wrong those kids needed to go
I agree!!
Wow they were so great that I didn’t even know they were gone LOL
“The kids” were there to show how àlccoholics affect them. They served their purpose and are gone. They are not interesting or necessary to show any more. The girl moved on as she well should, and hope she will do better in life. The boy living with his father out of that madhouse with the women’s chaos, , also a good natural end. They are gone, as children of addicts do, and should. Get over it!!!
yup, I agree, Anna Faris’ character is the whole show!! She can’t leave! Mom is the only show keeping me sane!!
Ummm NO she was ruining my experience honestly… she was never as bad as she’s become in acting and I’m not sure why.. but if you pay attention closely you’ll see how fidgety and very uncomfortable she starts becoming… NOT GOOD ACTING 😏
UHHMM NO, that’s the Christy character fidgety like nerdy girl. That’s her acting! HELLO?! LOL
NO, she is an AWFUL actress. Look at how she keeps opening and closing her mouth. She looks like a fish, and that is an insult to fish. In the latest few years, she has become a real pain. She looks like one of the Dr. Suess characters in the book, “The Butter Battle”. It is not just the character (who was very odd). It is Anna Faris who is the rotten actress.
So agreed! I’ve even cried a little stupid I know! But I love that show it won’t be the same by no means!
Agreed !
With every season her character was getting more pathetic and hard to watch; she became annoying! I believe they’re be fine; the other ladies are extremely talented and can hold their own! Don’t sale them short – they’re very funny!
I agree!!
I agree Peter. Show will die a slow death without Christy on it. Once they change people on a show, it usually dies. Kids off of it was no great loss. Christy gone is a big loss. Give it one more season at mist.
Christy always made me cringe. I will enjoy the show much more without her.
The Show will be nothing without Christy. Get over yourself
I agree! Allison Janney alone, standing on her head and reading the phone book is enough to make me watch!
Yesssss!!! Me too!!! I ant stand her!
she will be a lawyer and get a job out of town and leave
Exactly my thought!
Mom has quickly become one of my favorite shows as I binged the whole thing during quarantine, but I must say, the show has gotten better the less it has focused on Christy. I like her fine, but Bonnie, Jill, Marjory, Tammy and Adam are much better characters in my opinion. I think I may like it better moving forward.
Frank, I totally agree with you, I think I will like it better when she’s gone too!
I’ll miss Christy a lot since I think she’s the funniest character on Mom BUT I’m tiring of her never being content with her life.
When I heard that Christy would be gone this season I figured they will just say that she finally got into a good law school in another state and that is why she had to leave. I doubt they will make up a relationship off screen, but if AF comes back for a series finale she will likely be in a relationship and happy. That is my hope at least. I knew they wouldn’t have her backslide and end up in rehab to explain her absence. With her applying to law schools out of state they had a built in exit strategy already.
She gets married accepts a job in another state
Its natural for family to move away so storyline wise that’s easy. As for the show I think they’ve developed such a strong group over the years by naturally adding new women in that it could still work. Anna appears to have left on good terms (considering she was still under contract to do another season) so a return guest appearance doesn’t seem out of the question at least I hope she’d come back for series finale or close to.
Great point. I bet they pull a Three’s company and have her “call” on the phone. Like Suzanne Somers did when she left three’s company.
“left”. LOL
Suzanne may need a word with you.
Oh, this made me laugh out loud!! Very good!
I hope they tone Bonnie down a bit. Between her loud voice and her singing, too much noise.
Bonnie is my favorite. She is hilarious and if she was the one leaving I’d probably exit also.
She is funny, and if the actress can make me hate the character she’s doing great. Only problem? I was married to a Bonnie. Fun? Not so much.
I agree, Bonnie is so often over the top!
Bring back a past love interest who appears at her graduation, they move away together in a town where Christy is hired as a lawyer.
Maybe we could just forget Christy existed just like her two kids….lol
That was so poorly done. They stopped referring to the kids at all except for one episode with Violet podcast.
I’m glad they got rid of violet! She was a beotch!
They mentioned Rosco last season, Rudi mentions that he saw a text message from him.
Seriously. I understand Violet. She was an adult and can easily be written off, but what about Roscoe? What happened to him? I also loved his Dad and thought he added the chill so often needed to Christie and Bonnie’s insanity.
Yessss
The actor that played Baxter is now on Bob Hearts Abishola. playing the same stoner character.
I’m guessing big job in L.A. or N.Y. Or D.C. The low hanging fruit way out.
That being said Jill and Andy are my favorite couple on the show.
Christy won’t be missed that much. If they want to bring that Bonnie family conflict back, they should bring in Katey Segal as Bonnie’s long lost sister on her dad’s side. This brings up a whole new can of issues for Bonnie to work through. Also how great the two of them as sisters!!
As much as I love, love, love the idea of Katey Segal and Allison Janney playing sisters (their voices are so similar), Katey Segal’s plate is full with her new ABC series “Rebel” and recurring role on “The Conners.” Maybe someday – but no time soon.
That’s an awesome idea! But she’s already on The Conners this season.
I think Mom will do fine we will all Miss Christy but Mom has a strong cast and I hope they bring her back for upcoming episodes in the season I also hope they bring back Roscoe and violet too
I would love it if they brought the kids back on…and violet visiting her baby …see a relationship develope
Personally I’m not a fan of change. 😥 Like on 2 & 1/2 men.. You’re fortunate enough to fine lightning in a bottle once then it’s gone and the replacements are not the same.. Good luck Mom it’s my favorite but it’s big shoes to fill. 😥
2 & 1/2 Men should have been cancelled after Charlie Sheen left/fired. As much as I like Ashton Kutcher, the whole premise with him and Alan living together was ridiculous. Not to mention, the humor became much less funny and more distasteful (similar to 2 Broke Girls) I love innuendo and sly remarks but when it becomes more gutter, it loses the funny.
Either Patrick comes back for Christy or maybe she becomes a Rhodes Scholar. I am hoping for legal opportunities in New York or overseas.
She gets a big lawyer job in another city.
I would love to see more on Violet, Christy’s estranged daughter — I felt that story line was left unfinished.
I love Tammy! She is my favorite! I will miss Christy. I am glad the kids got write out. Well mostly the oldest girl. I disliked her cause she was so mean!
I love Tammy too….
Violet was impossible to watch. So bitter and cruel after they’d already resolved many of their issues.
Yeah… they resolved their issues. She didn’t resolve her. Think of what Christy was at Violet’s age.
One thing I hated was how Bonnie was St. Grandma to Violet. Christy didn’t become who she was on her own. The podcast episode cemented my complete hatred of that relationship.
Based on the tease above I bet she gets into a really good law school out of town and transfers for the opportunity of a lifetime.
Always thought she was a selfish brat so glad she is gone. Think she always just thought of herself. Didn’t like the character and don’t think she is such a great actress, but love the show.
I love Mom and all of the other cast members. I think the show will do fine because as much as I enjoyed Anna’s character she did start to be a real buzz kill so good riddance just do more with the other ladies roles. Please, Please don’t bring Violet and Roscoe back. Violet was just as bad as Christy with her love/hate relationship with Christy her constant whinning was overkill. Roscoe never added that much to the role. Mom will be fine Allison carried tge show anyway.
She will get a great job offer at another city!
I would assume she becomes an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court…..
Winner!
think she is leaving town to pursue the relationship of the woman she met at the retreat. Where she moves to will offer greater opportunity to pursue her career in law
That is a great idea!
I hope that Anna Faris leaving doesn’t do to Mom what Topher Grace leaving did to That 70’s Show.
I’m old enough to remember lots of actors leaving shows for various reasons but the pursuing other opportunities always amused me. I believe she made a movie during hiatus ( the awful remake of Overboard) so clearly there is time to do other stuff. Case in point – where does Allison Janney keep her Oscar?
Many other actresses, sorry actors as they now want to be called. Do movies in their time off, like Allison Janney. Anna did one too as pointed out before, she could have still done that and stayed on the show. She may have left because she wasn’t as important on the show as before.
Last season both the leads got a big payday for a 2 yr extension, the show was a guaranteed payday this yr.
So NO WAYshe just leaves. And with zero time to recast. More to the story.
