The CW on Tuesday is taking a break from its usual capes and tights to introduce the world to a few real-life superheroes.
Tough Mudder: The Challenge Within (8/7c) follows several individuals attempting to complete a military-style obstacle course known as a Tough Mudder, described (accurately) as “probably the toughest event on the planet.” Staten Island resident Bobby Granito is one of those determined individuals, whose efforts are even more impressive when you take into consideration that he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis just a few weeks prior to his 50th birthday.
“I wanted to relate with other people who might have M.S. or other physical challenges,” Granito says of taking part in the Tough Mudder. “Maybe I can be an inspiration to other people.”
Really, though, there’s no “maybe” about it. Granito says he’s received “so many responses” from people who watched The CW’s online Tough Mudder series, which leads up to Tuesday’s on-air special, “and they all say it’s very inspiring.”
“As you’re going through it, you can’t step back and see if you’re having an impact,” Granito explains. “But I’ve had people tell me that they’re now going to do something they’ve always wanted to do because of this.”
And it sounds like Granito is even managing to inspire himself. “Whenever I’m doing something difficult, I think back to the Mudders,” he says. “I’m like, ‘You know what? I’ve done five Mudders. This is going to be a piece of cake!'”
