Another Smallville alum is setting a course for National City — and you’re going to love to hate him.
Sam Witwer, who played Doomsday on the eighth season of Smallville, is joining Supergirl in the series-regular role of Agent Liberty, EW.com reports.
Witwer’s character serves as the charismatic — and, of course, deeply evil — founder of Children of Liberty, an anti-alien hate group dedicated to establishing humans as the superior race. According to the show’s producers, he conceals his vile nature “in the guise of a family man,” making it all the more difficult to take him down.
Witwer, whose credits include roles on Syfy’s Being Human and ABC’s Once Upon a Time, isn’t the first Smallville actor to join the Supergirl family; Erica Durance (formerly known as Lois Lane) recurred in Season 3 as Kara’s mother, while Laura Vandervoort appeared in several Season 1 episodes as the villainous Indigo.
This marks the second actor to join Supergirl as a series regular in Season 4; we previously reported that Jesse Rath (Brainy) will be sticking around full-time.
Additionally, as TVLine exclusively reported, neither Jeremy Jordan (Winn) nor Chris Wood (Mon-El) will return to Supergirl as series regulars, though Jordan is expected to recur. “We’re not saying goodbye to Winn at all,” executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller told TVLine last month. “We’re already breaking big stories for him right now for the fall, and I think the fans will be excited to see what he has coming up.”
Supergirl‘s fourth season premieres Sunday, Oct. 14 at 8/7c. Your thoughts on Witwer joining the cast? Drop ’em in a comment below.
Meh. I find these type of storylines rather tiresome…but Sam Witwer sure is handsome.
I LOVED him on Being Human — and Jesse Rath is his former co-star’s brother! If we could get a Being Human reunion I wouldn’t complain
Yes, yes!! He and Erik (True Blood) are the sexiest TV vampires ever.
I loved Sam as Aidan. It was an awesome show and I tried watching the original version, BBC, and found it meh. Even knowing what it was about from the Syfy show, I turned it off. It will be interesting to see him play a fatherly/villain role.
I get that the show is in a unique position to address the important topics of racism and anti-immigrant sentiment in America, but doesn’t this really feel like a rehash of the Cadmus/Lillian Luthor plot line of season two?
Sa-weeeeet.
Love this show so much.
Yawn. Sounds like another boring season.
Not sure why they insist on bringing on originally-heroic characters to be villains when they could actually bring on some, ya know, VILLAINS. Should be another stellar seaon.
Sounds totally boring. They can add all the new regulars they want but it won’t cover for the total incompetence and dishonesty of Rovner & Queller in S3. They should be ashamed.
Sounds like a very preachy season.
Remember when they decided the DEO shouldn’t use guns anymore? And cops pointing guns at James when he’s in superhero garb just because he’s black? And the hamfisted “Alex coming out” story? It’s always been preachy. It’s not that any of those are necessarily bad topics to explore (well, the first one is a bit ridiculous, but no more ridiculous than a girl who can fly and shoot laser beams out of her eyes I guess), it’s just that they have all been handled in an extra-preachy, self-congratulatory, completely non-nuanced surface-level way. I’m left as it gets and I couldn’t more tired of it.
The problem with the “anyone who is anti alien”is evil storyline is that every frickin year, an alien tries to destroy the world. So at some point … can you blame the fear and dislike? If that is your argument then find a human villain who wants to destroy the world.
just cos one alien does something evil, doesn’t mean they’re all evil, there’s been some evil humans like hitler or stalin but that doesn’t mean we hate all humans.
I really want to be psyched for the new season but since as far as I can tell absolutely nothing was done BTS to fix the hot toxic mess of the last 1 1/2 seasons I just can’t. If Queller/Rovner are making the decisions then my expectations are for them to create another toxic hot mess with dubious plotting and lousy story telling. God I loved S1 of this show so much. I miss that.
I hope they have a good story for s4 as the show shifts to Sunday.
Good casting for the new season. Sam is a good actor. Looking forward to see him on the show!
Nooooo he’s so unlikable and a flat actor
I really remember him from Battlestar Galactica
I really remember him from Battlestar Galactica
Eh. I’m not sure about the “family man by day, masked evil doer by night” aspect. It’s a little repetitive after Reign, but I guess it’s meant to be an evil mirror to Kara’s two identities.
I am glad that Supergirl is picking up the alien immigration issue again, after abandoning it for almost all of season 3 (we never even saw Winn’s alien girlfriend). I just hope that they do enough to differentiate it from the plots we already saw explored in season 2.
Sam Witwer is great! He would make an interesting addition to the cast
Doubtless a comment on the current United States political situation.
Let’s hope it is not the typical whole season bad guy thing. That is getting old, just like on Arrow and Legends, I got so tired of seeing Damien Darhk. Hate the whole season fight villain same with the Flash….Enough already!
Is he gonna be gay too…
You can’t have a gay villian on this show. He’s going to be Christian, which is eveil in this universe.
LOL! True!
I just want Harrison Ford to become Canadian and move Calista to Canada so she can rejoin the show and save CatCo from James and Lena.
loved sam on being human. can’t wait to see how he pulls off this role. about agent liberty, born evil or made to become evil by life on the show? also, his character in the comics is let just say complex man!
This is the great compilation, thanks for the huge list
Love Sam Witwer !!
It was an awesome show and I tried watching the original version,
