Good Girls reunion alert!
Retta — who costarred with Christina Hendricks and Mae Whitman in the late, lamented NBC dramedy — is set to star in a new NBC crime drama, Murder by the Book, from Good Girls showrunners Jenna Bans and Bill Krebs, according to our sister site Deadline.
The new series, which has earned a put-pilot commitment from NBC, stars Retta as a woman who reviews murder mystery books for a living and puts her expertise to work as she “becomes an unlikely detective to uncover the shocking truths about an eccentric seaside town,” per the official description. Bans and Krebs will serve as writers and executive producers; Retta will be an EP as well.
“We learned on Good Girls that Retta can be as heartbreaking as she is funny, so we wanted to create a starring vehicle that would highlight her amazing range,” Bans and Krebs said in a statement.
Retta played struggling suburban mom Ruby Hill on Good Girls, which was cancelled last year after a four-season run. She also costarred as parks department employee Donna on NBC’s Parks and Recreation.

Love Retta!!! This sounds almost Murder She Wrote-esque and I’m here for it!!
I like it. We need some comfort food TV. The current menu on broadcast TV is a little stale and static. A fun whodunnit with a likable actor is very welcome. Not sure in our ‘peak TV’ era, broadcast execs seem to be giving up.
This reminds me a little bit of Murder, She Wrote and the proposed reboot from nearly a decade ago that would have featured Octavia Spencer as a self-published mystery writer. I love Retta, though, and I’m very much here for this!
I wish I could get excited about this project as Retta is terrific but the writers and producers on Good Girls didn’t know what they were doing. That show got progressively worse until it was utterly unwatchable.
This is totally up Retta’s wheelhouse.
Yaaaas!
I will totally watch this!!
Sounds great, always good to get to treat ourselves to more Retta!!
Can’t wait to see this!
I miss the show. Just finished the whole series again. It was so good and the girls played so good together with their own unique personality that collaborated well
I love Retta! I miss Good Girls, so I will definitely give her new series a chance! She’s also fun to watch on HGTV’s “Ugly Houses”!
