The overture may be out there, but it has yet to reach Gillian Anderson.
Last month, Fox chairman and CEO Dana Walden was bullish about the prospect of more X-Files episodes, saying that not only have there been “conversations” with series creator Chris Carter as well as Anderson and co-lead David Duchovny about a potential Season 11, but, “I believe everyone is on board.”
However, in a new interview with our sister site Deadline, Anderson insists she has not been approached. “I’m open to the conversation, though they haven’t come to us yet,” she said, presumably referring to both her and Duchovny. “I have no clue when they’re going to. I’m getting on with the rest of my life and I’m booking other jobs, so if it is indeed something that they would like to continue, then that conversation will need to be had. And I have no idea when that will be able to take place at this juncture.”
Duchovny, who was also interviewed by Deadline, hesitated when asked about committing to another run of X episodes. “I’m pausing, and I don’t know why I’m pausing,” he hedged. “I guess what we found with this season was that it’s possible to still get it. It doesn’t not work. And then the question becomes, if we were going to move on, how do we make it work even better? That’s a question we’d want to ask.” (Note to DD: We share your concerns.)
A rep for 20th Century Fox, meanwhile, maintains, “Dana’s statement was and is accurate. Representatives for Gillian, David and Chris have been approached about doing more. Nothing more to report at this time.”
For his part, Carter expressed confidence back in February that additional episodes were out there. “I can’t imagine, with the ratings that we’ve got and the way we ended this season, that there won’t be more X-Files,” he said. “They will find a way to get that done. Because I spoke about it briefly with Dana Walden… so there’s an appetite there and… a chance certainly to find how we’re gonna get ourselves off this precipice.”
I really hope so. Otherwise, the finale is complete BS. How do you end with such a cliff hanger? It’s not fair to the actors or fans to leave us in limbo.
Exactly. I hate to see the characters where they’re at right now.
Gillian’s getting a lot of work that’s a lot more substantial for her as an actress. I want more X-Files, but I think Fox is going to need to back up a Brinks truck to get Gillian back in that wig.
I’d rather they finish off X-Files with a film. The 6 part series was a complete joke.
Duchovny to English translation: we’ll continue if they can get rid of Chris Carter.
LOL, exactly.
Totally agree, must be embarrassing for CC, out of the 6 eps of S10 the 3 worst received ones were all the ones he wrote and the 3 that made the reboot worth it he had little to nothing to do with.
It seems that once again we have a situation where the reps for people have been approached, and they haven’t bothered passing it on to the people that actually matter. I’m getting a bit sick of agents thinking they’re in charge.
Not necessarily. Fox gave a very broad statement about reps being approached. That could easily mean that Fox put out feelers to see if their main stars had any interest in continuing since they don’t have contracts in place. Meanwhile, it’s been months and Gillian is saying Fox has not been offering anything concrete yet and she has other jobs to consider.
Wow something is going on with both parties. Anderson says she hasn’t been approached and yet FOX says they have. Hmm who are we going to believe? FOX cannot take care of any of their shows or actors properly so its no surprise this has come up. Somehow a deal will get done but I believe this is pushing The X-Files back even further
Are we going to believe FOX, the studio that insulted The X-Files’s principal actress by offering her half of her costar’s salary? That FOX? No, I DON’T want to believe. LMAO.
A rep for 20th Century Fox, meanwhile, maintains, “Dana’s statement was and is accurate. Representatives for Gillian, David and Chris have been approached about doing more. Nothing more to report at this time.”
Right there in the article FOX backs up Anderson’s statement, saying that the actors haven’t been approached, but their agents have been spoken to.
And if the agents haven’t bothered passing it along the message to the actors, it means that FOX is likely being insulting in their offers again. I’m perfectly okay if we don’t get another 6 episodes. I only really loved 1 and some of them were utter messes, which is unacceptable given how short the run was.
They need not bother, the last X file was terrible. Poor story, lackluster acting.
Had great hope for the last show.
Good luck in your future endeavors
The 2008 film and at least half of the episodes of this new season were kind of a mess. First of all, it was a HUGE mistake to contrive a breakup between Scully and Mulder. It just felt inauthentic and absolutely pointless. And then there were some bizarre tangents and scenes. Not to mention one of the reasons Duchovny probably felt like it didn’t completely work was because Carter spent too much time separating Scully and Mulder in every episode. If you’re only coming back for six episodes, give the fans what they want to see! It was like Carter forgot how to write their partnership. So either he needs to find his voice again or he’s going to need some help with the next run of episodes. Still, there were enough great moments to see the potential the show has to return to the greatness it once was. And to leave on that cliffhanger would be cruel!
THIS! The separation was the stupidest creative decision CC has ever made and he has made some darn stupid ones in the past. There was no reason having them together wouldn’t have worked, I think CC thinks it’s romantic that there’s now a tension between M and S that he thinks is similar to a large portion of the original series in that they long for each other but forces them are keeping them apart. But it’s a completely different tension now, it’s not a sizzling sexual chemistry or romantic longing it just feels awkward and as you said, unauthentic and sad tbh. And they were acting like a couple in so many of their scenes together, the break up literally served no purpose. In the original series, one of the most fundamental aspects of the show and M and S and their relationship was that they never left each other, they never prioritised anything over the other and they always knew how to handle the other. Even if you’re not a shipper, you can’t deny that any of that isn’t the truth. Scully leaving Mulder due to his depression and barely ever seeing him until their reunion in ep 1 completely defied both their characters and even the dna of the show. And for anyone who says “any 2 people can break up, that’s what happens in real life”, this isn’t real life, it’s the X Files, and these aren’t any 2 people, they’re Mulder and Scully.
Bring back Frank Spotnitz and Vince Gilligan for starters. Chris Carter has proven himself incapable of writing his way out of a wet paper bag, let alone the relationship between his two leads. The magic happened in spite of him, not because of him. He had a very lucky casting choice and some excellent writers and a good initial premise. He can’t offer anything positive.
And I think DD and GA know that, hence the reticence. I was a diehard fan ever since the first episode aired, and I was so excited for this tenth season. Now, of course, I’m regretting that they ever did it, like so many fans. Leave them in their rowing boat, Gendry-style. The new series ruined the old series in the same way the last Matrix film ruined the first!
I expect a resumption of the X-Files, soon, closer, then to start in mid 2017. The “season” 10 was kind of a test, almost a joke to be aware of the potential current audience, I think, because were 6 episodes without much to do with the arc of history. And the more we have news about the X-Files is good for fans like me.
Fox will wait until the very last moment, snap their fingers, and expect everyone to drop whatever they’re doing. That approach will ensure the next X-Files episodes some time in 2019.
I guess she cannot find a new wig. Lord knows the one from this series was awful. The writing was awful, DD looked bored stiff, and Gillian who is a marvelous actress was very wooden. Just an awful revisit of a once truly awesome show. Carter should be ashamed of himself. I wonder why is career has been stagnant since Millennium? I know, he sucks as a writer now.
I certainly hope to see more of the Xmas series. There are few options worth following- this will always draw my attention.
