DWTS Shake-Up: Erin Andrews Follows Tom Bergeron Out the Door as ABC Takes Show in ‘New Creative Direction’
Dancing With the Stars is cleaning house. On the heels of longtime host Tom Bergeron‘s shocking announcement that he will be leaving ahead of Season 29, ABC is now confirming that co-host Erin Andrews has also been pink-slipped.
In joint statement, ABC and BBC Studios, which produces the series, said: “Tom Bergeron will forever be part of the Dancing with the Stars family. As we embark on a new creative direction, he departs the show with our sincerest thanks and gratitude for his trademark wit and charm that helped make this show a success. Erin will also not be returning, and we appreciate all that she brought to the ballroom. Fans have been rooting for her since she originally competed as a contestant back in 2010, and her signature sense of humor has become a hallmark of the show.”
Late Monday, Bergeron sent social media ablaze when he tweeted, “Just informed @DancingABC will be continuing without me. It’s been an incredible 15 year run and the most unexpected gift of my career. I’m grateful for that and for the lifelong friendships made. That said, now what am I supposed to do with all of these glitter masks?”
DWTS is set to return with Season 29 this fall in its traditional Monday perch. ABC has yet to announce how the show will adapt in the era of coronavirus.

The Houghs have contracts with NBC and with Derek’s being a dancing show, I can’t imagine it would be allowed. I think both Derek & Julianne are past DWTS and won’t be back – plus ABC probably can’t afford them, considering the other choices they have made due to budget constraints.
I could totally see Mario Lopez getting the hosting gig. He’s familiar with the show as he was a contestant. But would he be able to get out of his NBC contract as host of Access Hollywood? Doubtful he could do both. I’d probably take anyone but Michael Strahan or Ryan Seacrest!!!!!!
Nancy O Dell was still on Access when she was about to compete on dwts before she busted her leg.

Thank God. I used to tape the show and than fast forward thru the commercials and Bergeron and Erin ‘s nonsense.

What are they doing? They had good chemistry but I bet they will be reunited sooner rather than later if abc doesn’t outright cancel it after this season bombs.
Tom was the heart of the show and Erin was very compatible with him, they together made a great match. I do realize that the the show’s ratings have been down, the network and BBC Studios probably felt that they needed to shake things up. For me, they need to be politically free, I would hate to see another politician, public servant or politician’s child or spouse on the show. Please make the new season about good stories and interesting people.

I used to like watching DWTS. but with the recent no names I have become disinterested -don’t watch anymore unless flipping channels
tom could make himself compatible- a true pro. Erin took a lot of effort. yes please no more political ‘stars’.
Tom spoke up about the political contestants that never should have been selected.
Bet that is the major reason he was canned by annoyed higher-ups at the Network. His Q score rating is still sky high and he has been consistently good from season to season no matter what was happening around him on the show.
For me, it’s the contestants that make it or break it – not the hosts!

Look, I certainly get the demo broadcast network are looking for is 18-49 but ABC has to realize that if it does a creative overhaul which usually means they are looking for the younger audience, it’s just not going to happen. This show has always performed well with older adults which has served as a solid lead-in for shows like The Good Dr. If ABC turns its back on the audience who was left watching DWTS, they’re going to end up really losing the night and that’s an audience you can’t get back once you alienate them. Obviously I have no insider info and it’s all speculation on my part but whenever a network says creative overhaul, that certainly doesn’t usually mean something better is coming down the line, it simply means the network is making yet another attempt to recruit an audience who simply does not watch live tv. Hell, I’m in that 18-49 demo (35 years old) and I think this entire decision is stupid. It’s one thing to want to appeal to a younger demographic, but people in that age group can tell when it’s genuine and when it’s trying too hard, and I can’t help fearing this show might risk going the latter route.

They were fine as is, there’s no need for this kind of change (unless it’s some kind of financial move, in which case I’d say it’d be better to just fold the entire show altogether).

Hopefully ABC is smarter than what we all are speculating. When Disney first bought ABC in the late 90s, they decided to rebrand the network and make it more modern and hip, that included America’s Funniest Home Videos — they got rid of Bob Saget and got hipsters Daisey Fuentes and John Fugelsang, the modern take of AFV tanked and almost permanently killed the franchise. I see this change at DWTS as more of a way to make it more financially stable, hopefully they don’t mess too much with the formula and make it unrecognizable. I’d support a back to basics approach, less set designs and fluff and more ballroom.

Tom is irreplaceable. DWTS won’t be the same without his charm and smart banter. Erin should never had been hired. She was so miscast as hostess. She never knew what to say. Completely thick. And Silly. Maybe Tom will be a contestant. Wouldn’t that be cute?
I love the idea of Tom being a contestant. i agree about Erin. Let’s hope we get good chemistry and some non [political dancers. I will give it a chance but please do not disappoint.
Tom kept the judges in line and kept things moving along. He also has great chemistry with the pro dancers and respect for the stars.

Well this is really disappointing news!! Tom is a great host – fun, funny, quick-witted. It won’t be the same without him. Can’t believe he’s leaving!! Unfortunately I think DWTS will be cancelled after this season. You’ll be missed, Tom!!
I think it was about time for new faces. The show also needs to change voting because the best couple rarely wins.
That would be a different show (ballroom competition), and no need for the audience to vote.

Agreed. He was really the only thing still keeping me around. I’m actually still in their coveted demo. We watched as a family. My kids LOVED seeing him on Masked Singer, and were asking if they’d ever see him on DWTS again. I told them the show was renewed and supposed to return at some point, so yep. Never in a million years did I think they’d do something this stupid.

What is Dancing With The Stars doing first it was last year when Artem Sharna and the troupe dancers were not on last season and now this.
Tom Bergeron has been the only thing keeping this increasingly creaky show afloat for YEARS. For ABC to drop him is probably the dumbest decision in recent network history.
They did not dump him, he quit, they dumped Erin.

I think you misread that. The @ was DancingABC. So, to rephrase in non-Twitter speak: “Just informed Dancing with the Stars will be continuing without me. . . ” He didn’t quit.

I am floored by this news. Tom was amazing host. He had such a quick-wit and great timing. That’s needed on a live show. He’ll definitely be missed. I want miss Erin much at all. I wonder if part of the new creative direction is about diversity. It took so long to get a Black pro dancer. If Michael Strahan ends up as the new host–I’m done with DWTS LOL.
I wish the shakeup included dumping Bruno. He’s an over-sexed, walking mid-life crisis. Such an embarrassment. Len also needs to retired. He’s almost always cranky.
Well that is just ridiculous that they are not going to have Tom and Erin on the show this year. Tom especially is a huge part of the show. I am very disappointed and I don’t feel it’s necessary to make the changes. The world is in chaos and you have to keep changing things. Ridiculous!
Well I won’t be watching it. Tom B and Erin are the best. ABC will be sorry. Last season for the show!!! It’s going to lose a lot of viewers!!! Their nuts!

I do hope that the Brother and Sister pair are not taking over…..they are just well! egomaniacs and not pleasant to watch…wont watch if that is the case..hard pressed to watch if Tom and Erin gone.
The shows been over for 5 years! Should be called dancing with the people who want to be or think they are stars.
Well, I will no longer be watching Dancing with the Stars! It was a show I really enjoyed, but now I’m done with it!!!!
Too bad! They shouldn’t mess with a good thing. Tom has always been great and Erin has been the best of the women they have had in place. The scoring situation should be improved. Too many poor dancers get through and too many good ones get booted due to the voting public.
