American Idol Shake-Up: See Who’s Replacing Katy Perry and Lionel Richie on the Judges Panel Next Week
Well, this is a surprise: Katy Perry and Lionel Richie will be sitting out of American Idol on Sunday, May 7 (ABC, 8/7c), temporarily passing the torch to another pair of music icons.
Ed Sheeran and Alanis Morissette, the latter of whom was already planning on serving as the guest mentor, will join Luke Bryan on the judges’ panel for one night only.
And we have the UK’s royal family to blame for this temporary shake-up, as Perry and Richie will be in London for the coronation of King Charles III. Fortunately, they won’t be completely absent from Sunday’s broadcast; both of the MIA judges will be checking in live from Windsor Castle throughout the broadcast.
Sunday’s episode will air live coast to coast, with viewers votes determining this season’s Top 5, which Ryan Seacrest will reveal at the end of the broadcast.
In honor of Morissette guest-mentoring, the remaining contestants will be performing songs from her catalogue. The finalists will also be teaming up for duets of Sheeran’s biggest hits, while Sheeran and Morissette will both take the stage for performances of their own.

Yes I agree I love Lionel Richie I’ve grew up on all of his music he was and still is a good addition to America Idol but to be honest America Idol has changed sense Simon, Paula and Randy were on the Judges Panel I mean at least they didn’t let anyone and I do mean to pass to go to Hollywood like Lionel, Katty and Luke has at least Simon would of stop you or say no you’re voice isn’t America Idol material at least Simon would of been honest fern but honest some of the ones that went through wouldn’t have went through if Simon was there. And if anyone else reading what I’ve written would of agreed with me though. Yes I do miss Lionel Richie but he did send though people that wouldn’t America Idol material like that street guy last season and that Firefighter man could sing but didn’t go through but that street man did?! That didn’t make any sense.

There’s no appetite here in the UK for the King or the Coronation. There’s barely a lineup of UK artists taking part, mortifying that they’ve had to go this far down the list to get Perry and Richie
I liked Katty perry as a singer but not one day have I like her as a judge she is so shallow and no confidence she over acts and talks so loud to over compensate her lack of being a human. Lincoln Ritchie has always and I mean always been a legend since the first time he sat down at the piano. Luke Bryan’s is great my dil sings his songs all the time. It’s about time American idol got rid of katty,sorry to see Lionel leaving, you need I spice or somebody hot and very talented and Youngstown fill those seats. How about the lead singer of in this moment??? Can’t handle that kind of talent huh idol?? Christine perry? How about the lead singer of falling in reverse, hey maybe you can save a life from unwilling themselves and pick machine gun kellyvas a judge or to perform that night. You need wow and pow and hot in your face no more lame quiet ppl. Alanistte is cool but not recent and Ed Sheehan is recent but definitely not wow or pow or hot!! So figure it out idol cause I haven’t watched since Niki Minaj and hated Jennifer Lopez as a judge didn’t watch her at all!!!!!!!! Find hot wow and pow in your face new jydges!@ dont be scared idol they won’t bite you but will raise your rates and that’s what you want high ratings!!!!!

I Love Lionel Richie but he didn’t seem very exciting and Katy Perry just his too crazy they need to be replaced I stopped watching a few years back because of and Luke Bryan ain’t no better

After the unconscionable “Judges Pick” for the top 12 a week ago, all three judges should be replaced. American Idol is no longer about vocal talent but, the best sob/sad backstory.
I love Lionel but he should not be a judge on a vocalist show. Katty and Luke are no better as judges.
I love the dynamic between the 3 judges so I’ll miss Lionel & Katy, but glad they’ll be back soon. I do wish, however, that all of them gave more constructive criticism. I’m a big fan of Ed Sheeran & am looking forward to him being on & his songs. He’s such a great talent. I think he’ll have a lot to offer the contestants. Not as thrilled about Alanis or her songbook, but we’ll see how it goes.

Lionel Ritchie adds gravitas to the judging panel due to his musical depth of knowledge. He is the best of the judges!!
I was in the music trade for more than 30 years and having major health problems (my husband even worse),we had to retire and now we can not pay off our house.We lost the excitment of living.It’s sad that we were so passionate about music and now it doesn’t make a difference,who is doing what.We wish them all well !

I personally love the 3 judges. Yes, sometimes I wonder why they pass certain contestants through while others seemed to be better singers with stage presence. But they basically give good, constructive criticism. Even Katie. And they often time bring humor which I love. Laughter is good for the soul. Give them, if rumors that they are being replaced, another chance. I think they are a pretty good balanced trio.
I will miss Lionel but not that snotty nosed narcisstic Katy Perry. She’s such a show off She sure doesn’t act like a bible Christian should.
