Abbott Elementary‘s Sheryl Lee Ralph snagged the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series on Monday for her work in the hit ABC comedy.
Ralph prevailed in the category over her Abbott costar Janelle James as well as a trio of Ted Lasso actresses in Juno Temple, Sarah Niles and last year’s winner, Hannah Waddingham. Also nominated were Hacks‘ Hannah Einbinder, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s Alex Borstein and Saturday Night Live‘s Kate McKinnon.
Ralph is the first Black actress to win in the category since Jackee Harry won gold for 227 in 1987.
“To anyone who has ever, ever had a dream and thought your dream wasn’t, wouldn’t, couldn’t come true, I am here to tell you that this is what believing looks like,” Ralph said in her rousing acceptance speech, “this is what striving looks like, and don’t you ever, ever give up on you, because if you get a Quinta Brunson in your corner, if you get a husband like mine in your corner, if you get children like mine in your corner and if you’ve friends like everybody who voted for me, cheered for me, loved me, thank you, thank you, thank you!”

Backstage following her win, Ralph told reporters, “I’m a little five year old girl that watched TV on Sunday night when Tinkerbell came up and went around the steeple, putting stars around everything, and I remember saying, ‘I’m going to Hollywood! I’m going to be an actress! And I’m gonna drive a Mustang! I’m going there!’ And the fact that I am here, recognized after all this time as being one of the best of the best in my industry with a group of women… I’ve got the golden ticket! Yes, I do! Where’s my chocolate? I’m ready!”
Great win and great speech!
So well deserving!! Her acceptance speech was awesome!!!
Great speech so happy for her
I have always loved her and it’s about time she won. Has she ever been nominated before?
What a great song, again, I’ve always loved her voice. What a great and inspiring speech. I know she probably doesn’t read these, but CONGRATULATIONS!
No. Surprisingly, this was her first nomination ever.
Omg, I just realized when I saw the photo that she was Etienne on ‘Designing Women’, lol.
She’s my favourite on Abbott Elementary. I wish she was my kids kindergarten teacher.
I am so happy she won. I absolutely love her. I watch Albott Elementary every week, she’s my favorite.😘
I loved her speech. So inspiring for my daughter who’s trying to become an actress.
So, so, so, so, so happy for Sheryl. This win was so well deserved.
Congratulations, Sheryl!
Well deserved and long overdue. The Emmy voters actually made some good choices this year. I like when the awards get spread around instead of one show completely dominating.
So deserved! Congratulations! Honestly, anyone in this cast could have fun, and I wish Quinta and Tyler won as well! They all have the best delivery and their “looks” at the camera are great, and they work together so well as a cast. Looking forward to the 2nd season of the show, and hope they all get nominated again next year!
10000% deserved, so happy for Sheryl. Looking forward to seeing Janelle snag her much-deserved award one day soon too!
The original Dreamgirl from Broadway #80s has finally received her due and praises. Congrads
