The ladies of The White Lotus have booked almost every slot in this year’s Emmy race for best supporting actress in a limited series — but a pair of Dopesick stars are hoping to steal the spotlight.
HBO’s tropical resort-set dramedy claimed a whopping five nominations in this category, led by Jennifer Coolidge, who scored her first career Emmy nod for her highly quotable performance as loopy socialite Tanya McQuoid. She’s joined by costars Connie Britton (aka workaholic guest Nicole Mossbacher), who has four previous Emmy noms to her credit, and Natasha Rothwell (aka spa healer Belinda), who was nominated in 2020 for her producing work on HBO’s Insecure.
Two more White Lotus cast members will be enjoying their first Emmy nods, too: Sydney Sweeney, who played Nicole’s daughter Olivia — she’s also nominated this year for best supporting actress in a drama series for Euphoria — and Alexandra Daddario, who played unhappy newlywed Rachel. But don’t count out Dopesick: The harrowing Hulu docudrama about the opioid epidemic also earned nominations for Kaitlyn Dever, as pain pill addict Betsy, and Mare Winningham, as Betsy’s mom Diane. (Winningham already has a pair of Emmy wins to her credit, with eight total nominations.)
So should one of the White Lotus nominees get upgraded to winner? Or does a Dopesick actress deserve it? We want to hear from you: Vote for your favorite in the poll below (or click this link), then hit the comments to defend your pick.
Every weekday through Sept. 2, we’ll be posting another “Who should win?” poll, so be sure to visit TVLine.com each day to weigh in on who deserves TV’s most prestigious honor. (For a list of this year’s major Emmy nominees, click here; all polls will close Monday, Sept. 5 at 5 pm ET.)
Not surprised Jennifer Coolidge is in the lead. I think her performance generated the most buzz.
She played the same character that she always plays. I just don’t get it.
totally agree. i found myself so annoyed whenever the episode was focusing on her. the least interesting storyline and you’re totally right…it didnt seem like anything new for her.
Same here. Didn’t care for her character or performance AT ALL. I’d tune out when she was on.
She is awesome and totally under-rated.
Kaitlyn Dever for that quiet, heartbreaking performance: “Well, I guess you’re dead then.”
Wow. Five nominees from one show, two from another. Zero from any other show— period. Wonder if other performers (out of the thousands that are possible) are being given objective reviews of their efforts. Don’t want to crap on any media darlings here, but it seems statistically impossible that 5/7ths of the best supporting actress performances of the past year — come from ONE show.
Exactly. The entire point, in my opinion, is to single out the BEST performance from a supporting role in that particular show and nominate THAT person. Personally, I don’t think you should be allowed to. nominate more than one person from a series in each category. It’s just strange to me that out of all the possibilities there are, you are going to nominate 5 people from one series. Also, it makes it more infuriating because The White Lotus isn’t even a limited series. It’s coming back for a season 2… and it’s not like it’s a completely different set of characters that don’t connect to the first season. Jennifer Coolidge is coming back and playing the same character again. So no, it’s not even a limited series. The fact that they are even getting away with this is insane to me.
So well said!!!! Another award show I won’t need to watch!!
I adore Jennifer Coolidge, and her performance in White Lotus was certainly entertaining and memorable. But we’ve essentially seen her play variations of this type of character before. I think she’s going to win, but Kaitlyn Dever truly deserves this.
Agreed. All the women were excellent in both shows, but Dever’s performance as haunting. She convincingly took her character from a self-assured miner to an opioid addict. She delivered the changes, both big and subtle, while Coolidge and Britton played characters that were more one-note.
Plus again most people know her from her role as eve Baxter on last man standing but her rules on justified dopesick and unbelievable show she has quite the range and eventually she’ll win an emmy
Natasha Rothwell was superb and her character was critical to understanding the server/served paradigm of The White Lotus. It was heartbreaking to see her dreams blithely crushed by Coolidge’s character.
I know Coolidge will probably win but that is the nature of acting prizes. She has the buzz *and* she is overdue for awards recognition.
Jennifer Coolidge for me!
Mandy Moore not only should have been nominated. But the only one who should win best actress.
Big mistake exiting Kelli Giddish. I was looking so forward to the next season with her and Carisi and their relationship among other things. I love SVU and I love her in it. Please keep her there.
