Friends' Matthew Perry Reveals the Chandler Storyline He Rejected

The men of Friends were never shy about their love of sandwiches, but as it turns out, that love did have a limit.

During an appearance on Thursday’s Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Matthew Perry was asked if there was ever a time when he thought Friends jumped the shark, or if there were ever any storylines he just couldn’t believe.

“There was a storyline on Friends where Chandler went to a male strip joint because he really liked the sandwiches,” Perry revealed. “I called up and said, ‘Let’s not do this one.'” And he prevailed!

(If I’m being real, when I hear “Friends” and “shark,” I immediately think of Season 9’s “The One With the Sharks,” in which Monica actually suspects that Chandler is getting off to shark videos. And if that‘s not a jumper, I don’t know what is.)

Hit PLAY on the video above to watch Perry’s big reveal, then drop a comment below: When do you think Friends jumped the shark?

hahaha, that “shark” episode was just on Wednesday night (repeats of course). Too funny!

  2. Alex says:

I agree, the one with the “shark porn” was just awful, really embarrassing to watch, this sandwich thing sounded actually way better than that (maybe it’s because I haven’t seen it though)

  3. Amit says:

I really feel like that could have been more of a Joey storyline, given his love for the perfect sandwich.

  4. Guy says:

The worst thing Friends ever did was the Joey/Rachel relationship. It was cringeworthy. I can’t even watch those episodes now. Nearly killed the show for me.

    • Denise says:

      Agreed!

    • justice says:

      Yeah, that was sooo bad.

    • Alex says:

I was kinda okay with Joey having feelings for Rachel (although it was too much, too fast) and her turning him down, but the worst was when she realized she liked him too. Rachel’s character was so OOC during the ending of S9 and beginning of S10, awful to watch. Worst idea ever.

  5. Brennan says:

I didn’t like Phoebe having her brothers triplets, or Ross and Rachel having a baby and STILL not getting together, or Joey and Rachel going on a date.

    • Big Mike says:

Ross and Rachel DID end up together in the end though.

    • Denise says:

I hated that Phoebe’s mentally challenged brother and his pedofile school teacher were being enabled to raise children. Not a funny story line at all.

      • CG says:

He wasn’t mentally challenged and even though it was a little cringey, I think he was 18.

        • Mac says:

Yeah I was gonna say that’s just the actor’s mannerisms and then I realized the other place I saw him (The X-Files) he was also in love with his teacher?
I…I don’t know if that makes this better lol

    • CG says:

I thought Ross & Rachel having a baby together was fitting, and did you watch the series finale lol? They get back together. She got off the plane, she got off the plane haha.

  6. Television says:

The shark episode where Monica caught him, was too much. It wasn’t funny at all.

  7. Celina says:

The shark story were horrible… I didn’t like the one which they say Ross kissed Monica (thinking she was Rachel).

  8. Babybop says:

The only storyline I genuinely didn’t like in Friends was having Elle McPherson as Joey’s roommate. Though I love The One With the Routine…

I actually hate Rachel and Ross together and prefer Rachel and Joey. I’ve seen every episode a million times and Rachel and Ross are just so toxic for each other! Monica and Chandler are true love.

    • James Davis says:

Hahaha that’s funny … Ross and Rachel were the main love story. Gtfoh

    • Mac says:

I’m so with you. I’ve always hated that plot line. Maybe it’s because of how she treated Monica and Chandler (who I love and also think are infinitely better than Ross and Rachel).

At least Joey was actually *nice* to Rachel.

    • Kiwi3 says:

Don’t feel bad. You’re not the only one. I know it’s the “main story line ” but I always hated that they had a child out of the blue together,, that not only do they end up together but she ostensibly gives up her dream opportunity for him!
Ugh! I recently re-watched the entire series (hospitalized) and they’re truly toxic and wrong for each other. Especially if we’re in the real world and not sitcom land.

  9. Summers says:

The shark one is pretty bad, but for my taste the lowest point is hearing Phoebe say the words “I mugged Ross!”

  10. James Davis says:

I cannot believe what I am reading, i am a true fan of Friends I love every single episode. From start to finish. I still laugh at every single episode.

  11. Not to be mean, but Perry looks awful. It was hard to look at his face during the close up shots during the interview.

  12. Nerwen says:

This would have been hilarious if it was Joey!

  13. kmw says:

Friends jumped the shark when they put Rachel and Joey together. And really their ninth season just overall stunk

  14. Gern Blanston says:

The shark porn episode was the one where I realized that I was just hate watching Friends and hadn’t really enjoyed the show for a few seasons. I watched until the end because after nine seasons, why not? But, it was a struggle to stick with it after that one.

  15. Larry says:

They never did that shark episode was one of their best

  16. Josh Emerson says:

I can’t believe so many of you hated the shark episode. I loved it! I laugh every time it comes on. Yes it’s far-fetched but so what.

  17. J.B. says:

Why is Matthew Perry morphing into Donald Trump though?

  18. TV Gord says:

Matthew Perry seems to me to be someone who has always been extremely self-conscious about his image. I think it triggered some of the personal issues he had during the run of the series.

That said, I agree with everyone who suggested this would have been a better storyline for Joey. He was just dim enough to be hilariously oblivious to the fact that there were naked men in the place where the irresistible sandwiches are.

  19. Anne says:

That would have made more sense as a Joey plot line

  20. Connie Nasho says:

I love every episode including the shark one! I’m sad that Matthew Perry doesn’t feel the same way lol. I loved the unrequited love for Rachel storyline but then getting together was awful. Although I love the Barbados episodes. I guess they just had to explore it. Kudos to Friends though floor reacting like we all did and knowing it was weird and putting an end to it. I absolutely love Monica and Chandler together and often think of the series in two parts: pre Mondler and post Mondler. The show was revitalized by their relationship. If I am honest, I always thought they kind of threw together the Phoebe and Mike storyline just to have Phoebe end up with someone which I thought was unnecessary because she was a free spirit. Although when I rewatch the Mike episodes, they grow on me. I don’t think the slow ever jumped the shark, I think it definitely had its prime and just ran it’s course successfully.

  21. Anandasky says:

I could happily go the rest of my life not hearing Ross again say “we were on a break.” That was an awful story line for me. I also think they missed when they broke up Richard and Monica – those two just clicked. On the other side – I love when Phoebe taught Rachel how to run like a kid.

  22. Catherine says:

I can’t believe how many of you didn’t like Ross and Rachel together. I liked it! Then again I guess I always root for the “will they/wont they” characters to get together like on Chuck, etc. I own Friends on both DVD and Blu-ray and watch an episode most nights before going to sleep.

  23. peterwdawson says:

It could have maybe worked if Joey brought home the sandwiches, gave one to Chandler, but then he found out where Joey got them and Chandler’s freaking out while Joey’s all, “What? We’re just here for sandwiches.”

  24. tsevca says:

I didn´t like the one where Pete starts to do the fighting. It had really funny jokes, but after all his trying to get Monica, it ended really stupidly. Not that I liked him so much, but I hate when they bring a character and then just have to get rid of them quickly, because the star is there just for a few episodes.

    • MLPR says:

Yes!! I used to get so mad when they brought a really likable character on and then they left over a stupid reason…poor Michael Rappaport. Loved him.

  25. I remember watching Friends’ 20 years ago it was too funny back then and certainly did not lose its flare now, repeats of course

  26. William 'Bill' Hoffman says:

I just Perry didn’t reject it out of homophobic concern that it might hurt his career.
