Class — and the new TV season — are officially in session: NBC has handed a series order to new comedy A.P. Bio, TVLine has learned.
The comedy series stars It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia‘s Glenn Howerton as Jack, a philosophy professor who misses out on his dream job and is reduced to teaching high school biology. He’s not really interested in teaching biology, though, and decides to use his class full of brainy honor-roll students for his own purposes. The first-look photo above shows an apathetic-looking Jack in class, munching on an apple and sporting a few days’ worth of stubble while his new students look around, confused.
The A.P. Bio cast also includes Patton Oswalt (Agents of SHIELD, Veep) as Jack’s new boss Principal Durbin, Lyric Lewis (MADtv), Mary Sohn (Superior Donuts, Teachers) and SNL‘s Vanessa Bayer, who guest-stars in the pilot. Former SNL cast member Mike O’Brien wrote the pilot and will executive produce, along with Lorne Michaels and Seth Meyers.
The series pickup does raise the question again of Howerton’s future involvement on It’s Always Sunny. He’s played sleazeball Dennis on the FXX comedy for 12 seasons now, but in the Season 12 finale, Dennis ditched his Paddy’s Pub gang to (gasp) go straight and raise a family. Howerton admitted he “might not be” returning to the show; Sunny has already been renewed for two more seasons.
