Things are going swimmingly for Simon Cowell and Diablo Cody, apparently.
The America’s Got Talent judge and Juno writer are teaming up for a new synchronized-swimming comedy pilot at Fox, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cowell will be an executive producer, and Cody is writing the pilot along with Glee co-creator Ian Brennan. (Are we the only ones who hear “synchronized swimming” and immediately think of the classic Martin Short-Harry Shearer SNL sketch?)
The untitled series, which earned a put-pilot commitment from Fox, centers on synchronized swimmer Marion Lolo, who’s piled up 26 competitive medals… but has no friends. (She’s also had a restraining order filed against her.)
This is Cowell’s first project with Fox since The X Factor got cancelled in 2014; he also, of course, was a judge on American Idol for nine seasons. Cody, who won an Oscar in 2008 for her Juno script, also co-created Tig Notaro’s Amazon comedy One Mississippi and created the Showtime dramedy United States of Tara. She’s currently developing the ABC comedy pilot Raised by Wolves with uber-producer Greg Berlanti.
