For every heartbreaking episode of Supernatural, there’s a hilarious, meta adventure or an offbeat case (about fairies, imaginary friends, etc.) to counter the angst. So why shouldn’t the show’s world also have balance on an epic scale?
In this exclusive video from Supernatural: The Complete Eleventh Season (on DVD and Blu-ray Sept. 6), executive producer Andrew Dabb explains that Season 11 — which confirmed God’s identity and introduced his malevolent sister, Amara (aka The Darkness) — was about “the idea that the universe is kind of on a scale.”
“You can’t have light without darkness, and you can’t have darkness without light,” the EP continues. “Chuck, for as angry as he was at his sister, he understood that and that’s why he locked her away. She remained a counterweight.”
Adds co-star Mark Sheppard: “Without that balance, the world is not the world. I think that’s a really remarkable idea.”
The DVD/Blu-ray release also includes deleted scenes, the always anticipated gag reel, three audio commentaries and several featurettes (such as “Jensen Ackles on Directing ‘The Bad Seed'”).
Supernatural returns on its new night, Thursday, Oct. 13 at 9/8c on The CW.
