Game of Thrones saw its ratings explode with Sunday’s incendiary finale.
The HBO epic’s Season 6 swan song— which saw a half-dozen pivotal characters die, many of them as in Cersei’s Sept of Baelor massacre — attracted a series-high 8.9 million viewers. That bests the previous record-holder, last summer’s Season 5 finale, which attracted a then-series-high 8.1 million viewers.
In the coveted 18-49 demo, the finale notched a best-ever 4.4 rating, beating the 4.0 the show pulled earlier this season.
Season to date, the HBO juggernaut is averaging 23.3 million weekly viewers across all platforms, up 15 percent vs. Season 5.
