YouTube is stepping up to the original programming game!
The streaming service has given a straight-to-series order to Step Up, a drama based on the popular dance film franchise.
Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan Tatum, who starred together in the first movie, will executive-produce the show, which is described as a heart-pounding, sexy, music-filled story about dancers in a contemporary performing arts school. Step Up will debut on YouTube Red next year as the site’s first original scripted series.
“I’ve been a fan of the Step Up movies for years and always believed the films would translate into an awesome original series,” YouTube’s Global Head of Original Content Susanne Daniels said in a statement. “We know that dance is a hugely successful global category on YouTube, so I’m excited to have a series rooted in such an enormously popular genre on our platform.”
The project hails from Lionsgate TV and the films’ producers, Adam Shankman, Jennifer Gibgot and Meredith Milton.
