Tricia Helfer on Lucifer

Tricia Helfer Joins Lucifer Season 2 as Literally the Mother From Hell

Fox is hiring Tricia Helfer to do the devil’s work.

The Battlestar Galactica actress is joining Season 2 of Lucifer as the mother of Tom Ellis’ titular devil and D.B. Woodside’s Amenadiel, TVLine has learned. The Fox drama teed up the character’s introduction in April’s Season 1 finale. At the time, showrunner Joe Henderson told TVLine that whereas the show’s first season “was the story of a wayward son dealing with his father issues, Season 2 is Mom.”

Here’s the official character description for Mama D (or Charlotte, as she will be called): “Trapped in Hell for thousands of years by God (her ex-husband), the Mother of Angels is now free on Earth. Once reunited with Lucifer, it will become clear that she’s the one he takes after. Mom is fearless and has a strong conviction for who she is and what she deserves. However, mother and son do not share the same opinion when it comes to humanity. Everything that fascinates Lucifer about people repels Mom — a disdain that’s highlighted by that fact that Mom’s trapped in a human body for her stay on Earth. Lucifer’s desperate to find out what Mom’s up to, but she claims that all she wants is to spend time with her sons again. But can the devil’s mom really be that innocent?”

Henderson also previously teased that since Mum “is eternal to a certain extent,” he had the freedom to cast an actress like Helfer (who is only five years older than TV son Tom Ellis). And, creatively speaking, there are a myriad different directions he could go with the mother-son relationship. “In the comics and common mythology, it’s really not something that’s been established, so this is us doing a little world building,” he said. “This is us taking a step and exploring the answer to a question a lot of people never asked and staking our own claim. There are a lot of directions we can go and we’ve chosen one that we’re really excited about.”

Helfer — whose more recent TV credits include arcs on PlayStation’s Powers and USA Network’s Suits — is set to appear in multiple episodes, beginning with Lucifer‘s Season 2 premiere on Monday, Sept. 19 at 9/8c.

  1. Kate Garner says:

SO much perfection in this casting! LOVE!

  2. "A" says:

    Awesome casting !!!

  3. SoFla says:

Am I the only one that thinks she resembles Lauren German aka Chloe?

  4. Cactus Rose says:

Lucifer is one of the most innovative, interesting shows on TV today. The possibilities are endless with Mom joining in! It’s sci fi but with a “that could really be happening” twist. I LOVE it!

  5. I love her, but I was hoping for an older actress. With more gravitas. Not someone campy, but a little more deadpan.

  6. great choice in casting. season two’s going to get quite interesting,

  7. Joey Padron says:

Good casting to play Lucifer’s mother. Good scoop about the character for new season. Excited to see season 2 this September!

  8. Les Vogt says:

Ms Helfer was outstanding in Battlestar. I hope this is a good role for her.

  9. amarana says:

What? She’s only 5 years older than Tom Ellis?

  10. Byron says:

She wasn’t in Starz’s Power, But rather Playstation’s show Powers. :)

  11. Bianca says:

She’s only 5 years older than Tom (and looks younger than him). I get that whole supernatural imortality thing, but seriously? They could’ve cast someone older. There’s been so much talk about ageism in Hollywood and still not a lot of actual change.
Still, I’m excited. This is a fun show.

    • Anne says:

I’m of the same opinion as you. Ageism in Hollywood is such a huge problem and many many tv shows and movies cast women young enough to be the girlfriend as the mother; or young enough to be the daughter cast as the girlfriend. But the supernatural elements….and Tricia being awesome…..#conflict

    • Jene Rossini says:

I agree. She may be a great actress, but for this role they should have gone a little more mature. not “old”, but a little more mature, like 50 or so.

    • Whatever says:

“Mom’s trapped in a human body for her stay on Earth” It’s in the article?

    • celtic says:

She’s Devil’s mom, she got her rights! Let’s make american devil-milfs great again!

  12. Anna says:

Awesome, I love her! Great casting for a great show!

  13. Fiona says:

  14. Ash says:

    This is PERFECT!

  15. dalenbr says:

Sorry, this role had one actress name written all over it, Michelle Forbes.

  16. Seaturtle15 says:

I do hope Lucifer doesn’t get a conscience and go all goody-two-shoes on us. Please, keep him more on the diabolical side!

  17. Karen says:

Ok on mom storyline … but I hope the writers continue to develop and explore the relationship between Chloe and Lucifer. And why he’s vulnerable and mortal around her. Would be interesting to see Chloe’s diva mom interact with Devil’s mom. Love this show!

  18. DarkDefender says:

I am guessing that it is no accident that she resembles Detective Decker.

  19. arial2 says:

Finally, the mystery of Head Six, is explained! An angel, after all, just not the kindly type, like Kara Thrace turned out to be. Great casting! Now I’m looking forward to next season even more!

  20. DJ Doena says:

“But can the devil’s mom really be that innocent?”

But can the devil’s dad really be that innocent?

  21. Bark Star says:

Please put her in THE red dress for just one scene.

  22. Weezy says:

I think there might be a typo in the article. Tricia has been part of Season 2 of Powers on the Playstation Network. Not Power the show on Starz.

  23. dq18 says:

I’m not sure why there are so many “ageism” comments on this. Nobody seemed disturbed about the casting of Tom Ellis. In fact, the general consensus is that a young, charismatic actor plays the devil quite well. So, if “Mom” is suppose to be evil and scary as well, wouldn’t you imagine that she would take a younger, seductive form suitable for her needs?

And, let’s imagine for a minute “Mom” did take on an older form…If she is so unhappy with her earthy form, it’s likely to be a topic of conversation. I’m fairly certain the comedic angle of the show would much rather take the approach of a younger, more attractive person being disgusted by their earthly form than an older, less attractive person that likely the audience might also find unappealing.

Sometimes people really just want to find something wrong with things for no reason. I’ve found this show enjoyable, so I trust the show runners know what they are doing.

  24. cheristotle says:

I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS! This show had me 100%. It’s so witty. The casting is so frakkin’ perfect!

  25. ooosillyme says:

I can see her in this role…..this will take the show to a while new level…..

  26. susan revere says:

She was fantastic in Battlestar Galactica. Every time she was on screen she was cataclysmic. Great casting. Excellent actress who has the singular ability to shift-shape.

  27. SS CHIN says:

    Tricia Helfer is beautiful.
