Frank Spotnitz Thriller Ransom Starring Luke Roberts Ordered at CBS

CBS has placed a 13-episode, straight-to-series order for Ransom, a dramatic thriller from X-Files/Man in the High Castle EP Frank Spotnitz starring Black Sails‘ Luke Roberts.

The pickup comes just weeks after Spotnitz abruptly parted ways with Man in the High Castle in the middle of production on Season 2.

Ransom follows crisis and hostage negotiator Eric Beaumont (Roberts), whose team is brought in to save lives when no one else can. Eric understands criminals better than they do, and uses his insight into human behavior to resolve the most difficult kidnap and ransom cases. Despite the stakes, Eric refuses to resort to violence, even when confronted by some of the most dangerous criminals in the world.

Ransom, created by created by Combat Hospital‘s David Vainola, is inspired by the experiences of real-life crisis negotiator Laurent Combalbert.

“The world of crisis negotiation is incredibly compelling, as demonstrated by the fascinating real-life cases Laurent Combalbert has negotiated,” said Spotnitz in a statement. “Laurent has inspired a brilliant and complex character, and you can’t help but be moved seeing all the lives he’s saved around the world.”

I got say this sounds intriguing and this must be reason way the creator of The Man in the high castle left his position.

I wonder if this lends credence to the rumors that Black Sails season 4 might be it’s last (just based on where the story is now and what needs to happen to set up Treasure Island, it’s got to be close to the end). They play fast and loose with history to an extent, but I don’t see them killing off Woodes Rogers before the end, when he succeeding in beating the pirates in real life. That would be a pretty big change. Of course, this show being only 13 episodes, the shooting schedule might not overlap even if there is another season of Black Sails for him to shoot.
