The CW Boss Talks 'Darker' Archie, Crazy Ex Ratings — Plus, Flash News

If überproducer Greg Berlanti wants to take Archie Andrews and friends to edgier places, so he shall.

The CW president Mark Pedowitz said as much during his appearance at the Television Critics Association winter press tour on Sunday, when asked about the network’s script order for the live-action Riverdale, which features a buff, secret-harboring Archie, an Aderall-popping Betty and was detailed by TVLine in November.

When someone as prolific and successful as Berlanti (whose CW projects alone include Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow) offers to deliver a “darker take” on the Archie comics, “you give them that leeway,” Pedowitz said. “They deserve it, they’ve earned it.”

At this early stage, though, Riverdale is still just a script order.

Other topics covered during The CW’s TCA executive session:

* Invited to put the best possible spin on the mediocre ratings-to-date for Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (starring Golden Globe nominee Rachel Bloom), Pedowitz… admitted he was unable to. “But we believe in the show, we stand by the show… we’re going to give it a chance to get seen,” he said. “I hope it comes back” for Season 2.

* Speaking of Crazy Ex: Tony winner Lea Salonga will perform during the season finale.

* It was announced that filmmaker and comic book aficionado Kevin Smith (Clerks) will direct a May episode of The Flash.

* Julie Plec’s Containment, which revolves around a viral outbreak in Atlanta, will premiere… this spring.

* Pedowitz said there have been “some discussions” about an America’s Next Top Model retrospective special.

* CW Seed’s animated Vixen (voiced by upcoming Arrow guest star Megalyn E.K. née Megalyn Echikunwoke) has been renewed for a second season.
