The Crown Trailer: First Look at Netflix's Queen Elizabeth II Drama

Heavy is the head that wears the crown, and few know that better than Queen Elizabeth II, the subject of Netflix’s appropriately titled period drama The Crown.

The streaming service on Wednesday released the first trailer for the Stephen Daldry-directed series, which stars Claire Foy (Wolf Hall) as a 25-year-old newlywed Elizabeth. The cast also includes Matt Smith (Doctor Who) as Elizabeth’s husband Philip Mountbatten and John Lithgow (Dexter) as Prime Minister Winston Churchill.

Based on the 2013 play The Audience, the 10-episode series “tells the inside story of Queen Elizabeth II’s early reign, revealing the personal intrigues, romances and political rivalries behind the great events that shaped the second half of the 20th Century.”

The Crown premieres later this year.
