SERIES AND EPISODE | Secrets and Lies, “The Lie”
SONG | “It Takes a Lot to Know a Man”
ARTIST | Damien Rice
ALBUM | My Favourite Faded Fantasy (2014)
WHY IT ROCKED | It takes a lot to know a man, and Ben taking the rap for his daughter’s kill told Cornell all she needed to know about her one-time suspect, even if she wasn’t content with his decision.
SERIES AND EPISODE | The Last Man on Earth, “Screw the Moon”
SONG | “Supersonic Rocket Ship”
ARTIST | The Kinks
ALBUM | Everybody’s in Showbiz (1972)
WHY IT ROCKED | After starting Phil’s journey with “Apeman,” it was only logical to have his brother’s outer-space tale begin with this equally-befitting Kinks tune.
SERIES AND EPISODE | New Girl, “Clean Break”
SONG | “Rivers and Roads”
ARTIST | The Head and the Heart
ALBUM | The Head and the Heart (2011)
WHY IT ROCKED | The indie ballad — which you also might remember from the closing scene of Chuck — enriched Coach’s farewell as he said goodbye to his fellow 4Ders before heading to New York with May.
SERIES AND EPISODE | Person of Interest, “YHWH”
SONG | “Welcome to the Machine”
ARTIST | Pink Floyd
ALBUM | Wish You Were Here (1975)
WHY IT ROCKED | The Pink Floyd classic managed to reinforce the heartbreak in an improbably emotional scene as The Machine said goodbye to Finch before powering off forever.
SERIES AND EPISODE | The Middle, “The Graduate”
SONG | “Good Day”
ARTIST | Joseph Keith
ALBUM | Zen (not yet released)
WHY IT ROCKED | The Hecks kicked off the summer of ’15 with a party in honor of Sue’s graduation. In a rare moment, the family sat together on their back porch and actually enjoyed each other’s company. It was a “Good Day” indeed, and a sweet way to close out Season 6. (Though the album is not yet available, the song is available to stream here.)
SERIES AND EPISODE | Revenge, “Two Graves”
SONG | “For You”
ARTIST | Angus and Julia Stone
ALBUM | Down the Way (2010)
WHY IT ROCKED | The song first used during the pilot, then later throughout the series in moments with David and Kara, helped bookend Emily’s journey as it played at her wedding to Jack.
SERIES AND EPISODE | Jane the Virgin, “Chapter Twenty-Two”
SONG | “There’s Only You and Me”
ARTIST | Holly Conlan
ALBUM | There’s Only You and Me – Single (2015)
WHY IT ROCKED | The aptly-titled track reinforced the bond between mother and son as Jane kissed Mateo’s hand for the first time, realizing nothing in her life would ever mean more to her than him.
