Power Rangers 'Bootleg' Movie Stars James Van Der Beek, Is Awesome

Power Rangers fans, prepare to have your collective childhood morphed.

A new (and highly NSFW) 14-minute film, hailing from producer Adi Shankar (A Walk Among the Tombstones) and music-video director Joseph Khan, and co-starring James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), offers a glimpse of what a full-fledged, gritty Power Rangers movie would be like — and it’s pretty perfect.

Without giving too much away, the film (simply titled POWER/RANGERS) likens the multi-colored protectors to child soldiers, recruited to fight in an intergalactic war they have no business being in, and reveals the grim — not to mention cocaine-fueled — future that awaits them.

Also worth watching (below) is Shankar’s four-minute explanation of his thoughts behind the short film, particularly his explanation as to why he wasn’t able to cast Orlando Bloom as the Pink Ranger. (Hint: Like most things in life, it’s all Justin Bieber’s fault.)

It’s important to note, however, that this is in no way affiliated with the Power Rangers reboot movie that Saban and Lionsgate are planning for 2016. In fact, as Shankar notes, it’s not even a pitch for a movie at all.

Watch POWER/RANGERS above, then drop a comment below: Would you run to the theaters for this?

I loved Shankar’s interpretation of Venom starring Ryan Kwanten (worth watching if you haven’t seen it yet). Really creative guy. Can’t wait to see what he does next.

THIS needs to be a thing!

Like a 6 part series or something!

  9. ComeOn says:

It appears this thing has a bigger FX budget than all of the TV shows add up together! It’s very impressive but I hope the new power ranger movie won’t be “gritty, edgy” like this. I am sick of everyone going to the edgy route, except only making the whole thing darker, as in less light. I have my carrots but they all look crap on movie screen and just blur on TV.

  10. CK says:

I loved the visuals, but I hated most of the story. Just seemed like it was trying a bit too hard to be “gritty/edgy”. It just felt like the only thing that made them “Power Rangers” were the fact that the movie was titled as such and familiar visuals were thrown in.

    It’s morphin’ time!

  12. Katee Sackhoff needs to be in more stuff. She is so good at the “look like the innocent flower, but be the serpant under it”-types. Let’s get her out of Longmire and back into so etching major….like Captain Marvel.

  13. Erica says:

I enjoyed every minute of it!

Hell yes I would.. it’s more realistic and more of an adult version
