Power Rangers fans, prepare to have your collective childhood morphed.
A new (and highly NSFW) 14-minute film, hailing from producer Adi Shankar (A Walk Among the Tombstones) and music-video director Joseph Khan, and co-starring James Van Der Beek (Dawson’s Creek) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), offers a glimpse of what a full-fledged, gritty Power Rangers movie would be like — and it’s pretty perfect.
Without giving too much away, the film (simply titled POWER/RANGERS) likens the multi-colored protectors to child soldiers, recruited to fight in an intergalactic war they have no business being in, and reveals the grim — not to mention cocaine-fueled — future that awaits them.
Also worth watching (below) is Shankar’s four-minute explanation of his thoughts behind the short film, particularly his explanation as to why he wasn’t able to cast Orlando Bloom as the Pink Ranger. (Hint: Like most things in life, it’s all Justin Bieber’s fault.)
It’s important to note, however, that this is in no way affiliated with the Power Rangers reboot movie that Saban and Lionsgate are planning for 2016. In fact, as Shankar notes, it’s not even a pitch for a movie at all.
