ABC Family has ordered a pair of half-hour, single-camera comedy pilots, one from How I Met Your Mother scribe Barbie Adler and another from Awkward creator Lauren Iungerich, TVLine has learned.
The Adler-penned project, titled Kevin From Work, is a workplace comedy about a young man unlucky in love who professes his love to a co-worker, thinking he’ll never see her again after he accepts a job offer overseas. But then that job offer is rescinded, and now they have to continue to work with each other.
Adler will serve as an executive producer alongside veteran TV producers Aaron Kaplan and McG (the latter of whom will direct the pilot).
The potential series from Iungerich, titled Tough Cookie, is described as a fresh take on the “friends and family” convention. It follows a young mother who isn’t ready to parent and her daughter who doesn’t want to be parented.
David Janollari (Six Feet Under) will executive-produce alongside Iungerich.
“Single-camera comedies represent an evolution of our comedy brand,” ABC Family EVP of Programming and Development Karey Burke said. “We look forward to building a successful single camera comedy franchise to match the success we’re having with multi-cam comedies.”
