First Trailer: Will Jeffrey Tambor's Transparent Be Amazon's First Big Hit?

Is Amazon about to score its first breakthrough hit?

The online streaming giant — whose foray into original programming has yet to yield any Netflix-sized hits — may have a game-changer on its hands with Transparent, a 10-episode dark comedy from Six Feet Under’s Jill Soloway and starring Arrested Development‘s Jeffrey Tambor as Maura né Mort Pfefferman, the transgender patriarch of a Los Angeles family.

The cast also includes Judith Light (Dallas) as Maura’s ex-wife Shelly, while Gaby Hoffmann (Girls), Amy Landecker (Louie) and Jay Duplass (Togetherness) play Maura and Shelly’s children.

  1. K says:

This looks amazing! Exactly what television should be.

  2. Anne F. says:

Umm, so there must be something in my eye, because that last moment when Jeffrey Tambor says, ‘This is who I am’, just killed me.

  3. Rebecca says:

    I cannot wait for this.

  4. johnhelvete says:

Emmy nomination next year for Jeffrey Tambor? This looks very good.

  5. Rob says:

Not to be pedantic, but that probably should be transgender “matriarch,” not “patriarch”.

  6. Matt says:

I love this. Can NOT wait.

  7. dj says:

It can’t be because Alpha House is!

    • HAP says:

I was thinking the same. And Alpha House was renewed for a 2nd season. I guess it is all about semantics as far as “breakthrough” or “hit”.

Inasmuch as there have been stories written about how few Amazon members actually stream Prime, I’m guess that Netflix has an incredibly larger base of actual viewers.

      • Faye says:

I only recently signed up for it because Netflix was not airing some series I wanted to catch up on…Dexter, in particular. I was going to just do the 30 free trial but I’ve decided to keep it.
Disadvantage in Amazon is they charge a yearly fee, versus monthly. I’m not thrilled with that but still willing.

  8. LE says:

Looks good! It’s a shame I won’t be able to watch it :(

  9. Marcus T. says:

Looks like something critics would love and that’s all that really maters when it comes to making a show now.

  10. Babybop says:

Seems more like an Indie film than a TV show. I might check it out.

  11. Faye says:

I am looking forward to this !

  13. Joey says:

The pilot has actually been available for several months already. I watched it back when it was first available for non-Prime Amazon users. Looks great.
