On Tuesday night’s Tonight Show, a verklempt Jimmy Fallon paid tribute to Robin Williams, the “unbelievable” comic genius who earlier this week died of suicide.

Fallon, his voice repeatedly catching, starts off by hailing Williams’ caliber of comedy, at one point briefly illustrating it with his own impression. He then tees up a classic clip of Williams’ very first Tonight Show visit, opposite Johnny Carson, in which the whirlwind of wit kept the camera men on their toes.

Because of taping schedules, Conan O’Brien was the first late-night host to mark Williams’ tragic passing, solemnly relaying the news, as it broke, to his studio audience on Monday afternoon.

We’ve had to watch ‘beloved’ entertainers pass away too early be very sad about it…..but this one, for me, hits really hard. I think it shows so well that depression is a disease and not just someone feeling sad. You wonder how he could do this when he had so much; that just shows how powerful depression can be.

  2. Tran says:

As I recall when Fallon was a cast member on SNL back in December 2000 when Lucy Liu hosted, he did spoof Robin Williams in the Celebrity Jeopardy sketch with Lucy Liu as Catherine Zeta Jones, Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery and Will Ferrell as Alex Trebek.

  3. Pat says:

Wow, that was a beautiful tribute by Jimmy Fallon and to sound and speak like Robin really is unbelievable.

  4. Sonja says:

Perfection. I love that he picked a Johnny Carson clip to share. I can’t believe that he is gone.

  5. diane wood says:

Shocking indeed. I hope you finally found the peace you seek. I too hope the family you selfishly left behind are as lucky.

  6. Angela says:

“His brain was ten steps ahead of what he was saying.” Yep. Spot on.
That was a lovely tribute to Robin. Very, very cool (especially the ending). Not a bad impression of Williams, either.
And that clip from Carson. Man. Didn’t take long for Robin to win the crowd, or Carson, over. Sigh. Like Jimmy said, he will be missed.

  7. RJ says:

Great tribute by Jimmy. So sad T_T

  8. Allison Dunn says:

He didn’t die of suicide. Robin Williams died from depression.
