Orphan Black Comic Books to Expand Sci-Fi Series' World

A new comic-book series will look to build on, if not duplicate (heh), the success of TV’s Orphan Black.

IDW Publishing announced on Wednesday an early 2015 release date for a series of comic books that will unspool “all-new stories set in the complex and thrilling world of Orphan Black,” the acclaimed and recently renewed BBC America drama starring Tatiana Maslany.

Orphan Black, in addition to being a captivating TV series, is a perfect premise for comics,” IDW Chief Creative Officer/Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall said in a statement. “And as the second season has expanded the series in exciting new directions, that has only increased the amount of stories we’ll be able to tell in comic-book form.”

IDW will be working closely with Orphan Black producers to expand the series’ world. The first cover image, below, is by artist Nick Runge, and the full creative teams and additional details will be announced soon. How do you reckon the comic books might spin “new” stories without tinkering with the old?

  1. Mel says:

Please oh please let them explore the Beth Childs backstory — Maggie Chen, finding the other clones, meeting Alison and Cosima for the first time…..all of that.

Or Helena growing up in the convent. Sarah and Felix in the UK foster system. Siobhan Sadler’s rebel days (including a previous run-in with Marion Bowles perhaps?) The original creation of the experiment back in the 70s. Rachel Duncan being raised by Leekie….. there are just so many possibilities.

  2. Elizabeth says:

LOVE this idea. It’s a great way to tell stories that we want to see, but there’s no time to flesh out due to time constraints. How do you in 10 episodes tell so many different stories? You just can’t. As long as Graeme and John are working with them this is a very welcome addition.

  3. Yonas says:

  4. Wonderful! This is a great way to tell more stories without running Tatiana Maslany into the ground.

  5. Emily says:

I would really love each dead clone to get their own comic book…like, one for Beth, one for Katja, one for Jennifer…that’d be awesome.

  6. PJ says:

This is so exciting! The big thing everyone seems to want is Beth Childs back story so hopefully the powers that be pick up on that. Beth knew a lot more than she let on so it would be really cool to see her piecing everything together before the events that happened on the train platform in the pilot episode. Plus maybe it’ll make the wait for season 3 feel a little shorter.

  7. Please, please be good! I just wonder how well it would translate without Tatiana’s performance to give all the nuances. I think it would actually be best suited to maybe giving some flashbacks to pre-series (BETH!) Because there is pretty much no space between the episodes for much to have happened that we didn’t see on-screen….But the series doesn’t really have time to give us large amounts of flashbacks, that is definitely where comics would be ideally suited.
Or they could just be 25 pages each of Helena eating, either way I’m cool….

  8. I know what’s going on my pull list as soon as the guys from my LCS are back from SDCC

  9. chloe says:

definitely should be prequel based. excited for this.

  10. How the hell do I pre-order this!!!! It must be mine … precious.. my precious

  11. Carlee says:

Oh my goodness this is an amazing idea!! I really hope we learn the backstories of all the clones (the European ones in particular) and maybe some more insight into project leda/castor, though i think season 3 will probably cover that stuff… Regardless, so much awesome!!!

  12. Farrah says:

    I want one.

  13. Tari Jordan says:

Who did the cover? Did they get Jo Chen??

  14. Elizabeth says:

Who did the artwork? It looks like a drew struzan, but I’m not sure he’s working publicly anymore. Does anyone have any information on this?

  15. Sky says:

Cute Copine moments! Beth Childs backstory! Felix moments with the Clones! Rachel Duncan! Auntie Cosima and Kira!! Ahhhhh. So frakkin’ excited!!

  16. Mark says:

Heroes did something similar with online comics that expanded the story with back stories for some of the characters and adventures going on at the same time elsewhere in the Hero universe. Its a great idea to expand the Orphan Black universe!

  18. Rita G. says:

Didnt see Evelyne Brochu on the first issue, hope she is part of the program going forward. Would love to get a back story on Delphine and the ‘dirt’ Cosima was able to uncover about her career. How she came to work at Dyad, clone projects and relationship with Leeke.

  19. Michelle says:

What stores will be selling this?
