Saturday Night Live: Your 25 Dream Host Picks!

To say that Season 38 of Saturday Night Live has been a little lackluster would be like calling the Kardashian clan a wee bit overexposed. And while it wouldn’t be fair to place the sketch-comedy show’s woes on the shoulders of its guest hosts, the most recent string of emcees — Adam Levine, Justin Bieber, Christoph Waltz and Kevin Hart — haven’t exactly upgraded the tired lines that showed up on their cue cards.

Which got us thinking: Back in September, TVLine brainstormed a list of 15 first-time hosts we were dying to see. You responded with hundreds of fantastic suggestions of your own. And since Lorne Michaels & Co. seem to need all the help they can get, we picked your best ideas — none of whom have hosted before — and compiled ’em in a handy gallery.

So click through the photos below, then hit the comments with your thoughts on who you’d like to see follow Justin Timberlake’s stint this coming Saturday (11:30/10:30c, NBC)!

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  1. Mila says:

Dule Hill and James Roday … those two please!

  2. annehedonia says:

Those all look like FINE choices! I hereby throw Adam Lambert onto the monkeypile…

  3. I’d add Joel McHale, Alison Brie, and Matthew Perry to the list as well. Otherwise, there are so many amazing options on this list.

  4. Martin says:

Love the Kat Dennings idea, maybe soon… even if on two different networks, although didn’t stop Melissa McCarthy, but she had just had hit movie so who knows, would like it though

    • Ken says:

I, too, am in favor of Kat Dennings from Two Broke Girls hosting SNL, and I hope she gets her chance next, because I think she’d blend in well with the cast of SNL.

I want Kat Dennings with musical guest Youngblood Hawke from L.A., Eliza Doolittle or Bat for Lashes

  5. Jules058 says:

NATHAN FILLION! He’s known for his charming sense of humor, and evidently does decent impressions. I’d love to see what he can do!

    • Alan says:

not to mention that based on the various outtake reels from stuff he has worked on he probably has more than enough ideas for jokes.

  6. Amy says:

It has always baffled me that Stephen Colbert has not hosted. Has he turned it down? Steve Carrell hosted, only fair to let the other half of the Ambiguously Gay Duo host

    • wordsmith says:

Aside from his Colbert Report persona, he doesn’t have a great track record for staying in character while doing sketches. Then again, Jimmy Fallon made a good living cracking up during every skit, so maybe that’s okay…

    • Jay K says:

stephen colbert was on when they did the live action ambiguously gay duo — but i agree it doesn’t count.

    • scooby says:

I think either officially or unofficially he’s turned down things like this or the Emmys hosting job. He’s the “Stephen Colbert” character for bits like presenting, but people can’t get it in their head that that’s not him. Trying to be a different character in front of them would be a jarring experience for both sides. Maybe if he could figure out a way to do it, but I’m guessing he’d have done it already if he thought it was possible.

  7. Liz says:

Dule Hill and James Roday for the win!!!

  8. Amanda says:

Oh my goodness, Rebel Wilson would be amazing. They need to make that happen like now. Would also love Nick Offerman and Donald Glover so, so much.

    • wordsmith says:

Totally agree. There are a lot of funny people I love on the list, but these are the three who I’m sure would translate best to the SNL stage and completely kill it as hosts.

  9. Tran says:

My SNL dream hosts that didn’t make on that list: Damian Lewis, Chris Pine, Paul Walker, WWE superstar John Cena, Aaron Paul from Breaking Bad, Michelle Dockery & Hugh Bonneville of Downton Abbey and perhaps Jim Parsons from The Big Bang Theory.

  10. lariet50 says:

Some good ideas in the mix there! LOVE the idea of Nathan Fillion hosting. Even I might … well, no. No one is enough to make me watch SNL.

  11. Ang says:

Kelly Clarkson. Kelly was hilarious in her 2 skits the first time she was a musical guest. What is the hold up with inviting her back as the host and musical guest? This girl is comedy gold.

    • G-Mom says:

Oh! I so agree! I went to her concert here in Texas last Friday and she is hilarious!! (Not to mention the best singer ever!) I would also include Josh Hutcherson as a host. I love Nathan Fillion and think he would be great! I’m afraid I would have to skip SNL if Kathy Griffin hosted. Ugh!!

      • JC says:

Yes Kelly would be a perfect host she made everybody laugh with her grammy speech imagine what she could do in a whole hour. I would also like to have Josh Hutcherson and the whole cast of friends :)

    • JKR says:

YES! “I’m homeless AND blind….check this out!” “That’s a Burger King receipt!”

  12. Joe says:

Nathan Fillion? yes please! Joel McHale, and I always think they dropped the ball by not having Zach Levi while Chuck was on the air

    • Alan says:

or even yvonne strachovski, she didnt get much opportunity to show off her comedic side but when she did she always got a laugh out of me

  13. MariaPompeo says:

Rebel Wilson, Donald Glover/Childish Gambino FTW!

  14. madbengalsfan85 says:

Nathan Fillion easily (Loved him as Captain Hammer!)

  15. Mary says:

Carol Burnett would be awesome. I’d like to see Ginnifer Goodwin host.

  16. Meg says:

Rebel Wilson, Nick Offerman and/or Nathan Fillion please!!

  17. Heather B. says:

Carol Burnett – one of the best sketch comediennes of all time!

  18. Michelle says:

Hey, Christoph Waltz had one of the best eps of the season. A lackluster season, but they broke out some decent material for him at least.

  19. Sarah says:

YES to James Roday – let him write the entire episode!

  20. bre says:

Why is Lauren Graham not on this list?

  21. Amanda says:

Isn’t it Kevin Hart, not Kevin Hale?

  22. marge says:

Add Connie Britton to this list. There are endless possibilities and yet SNL keeps getting the same people (remember that one season where Emma Stone – though her episodes were funny – hosted twice in one year?).
    Spread the hosting love!

  23. Surprised and delighted, as always, to see Benedict Cumberbatch on this list. He could whip out his Alan Rickman impression.

  24. Six says:

Really no Matt Bomer on the list. Lets see great actor, funny & can sing and not mention great looking and a great guy. Ya I can understand why he was left off

  25. Victoria C says:

I might be a bit biased as I spearheaded the campaign for it after a crazy random tweet that Joe actually responded to…but I think Joe Manganiello deserves a bit of a better placement than #7 on that list! LOL
Check out the work we are doing to get him on!

  26. cjeffery7 says:

    Rebel Wilson & Minday Kaling –> SNL has always been such a sausage-fest. Although I wouldn’t poo-poo Nathan Fillion…

    • dude says:

Love them both but I feel like they both have a very specific brand of comedy. They’re not versatile. They’d be playing themselves all night.

  27. Laura says:

Mariska Hargitay. She’s actually HILARIOUS. And yeah, I’d totally love to see Allison Janney.

  28. Rob Horine says:

WAIT? Rachel Madcow makes the cut and Mariska Hargitay doesn’t?

  29. Sarah says:

    Joe Manganiello and Donald Glover!

  30. Joel Shapiro says:

Carol Burnett would be inspired casting. How do we make it happen.

  31. Clé says:

  32. Leah says:

Wow. I actually loved all those ideas! I would also include pretty much everyone from Parks, Community, and Modern Family. And Eden Sehr!

  33. Tori says:

    Also, Darren Criss!

  34. Jessica says:

What about NPH, he can do anything.

    • Jay K says:

i think he already hosted. didn’t they do a bit (digital short) about him being doogie howser? google it. i’m probably right.

  35. creactivitas says:

Would absolutely love to have Darren Criss!

  36. Alice says:

    Darren Criss!

  37. Demme says:

    Darren Criss
    Chris Colfer
    Rebel Wilson

  38. Darren Criss Please and Thank You

  39. Sam says:

Darren Criss would be great as host and/or musical guest!

  40. Alyssa says:

    Darren Criss!!!

  41. Awesome says:

Darren Criss NEEDS to be added to the list!!!!!!!!!!! He would be the perfect host, he can be a musical guest, and host, he has the experience doing skits with Starkid, and he is freaking Perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. Tom Charles says:

Nene Leakes, really? I fail to see the obsession with her.

  43. invisibleme0186 says:

I think Rebel Wilson & Mindy Kaling would do great. However, I’d especially like to see Darren Criss because he can contribute musically as well as comically. (see his stint as the host of the awards)

  44. Lindsey says:

Joel McHale!!!! Has Jim Parsons hosted yet?? I don’t remember him hosting, and if not, he needs to!!

  45. Paige says:

I would love to see Darren Criss as a performer or the host- I think he really excels in his live performances and is great at comedy bits.

  46. F says:

    Darren Criss!

  47. Amber Biddle says:

Without a doubt, Nathan Fillion. Ruggedly handsome and very funny!

  48. Joey says:

    Darren Criss

  49. Darren Criss! With musical guest Darren Criss! ;)
