Summer TV Snapshot: Does ABC Family’s Switched at Birth Deliver?

WHEN | Tuesdays at 9/8c, premiering June 14

WHAT IT’S ABOUT | We’ve already got shows about vampires, werewolves and everything in between, so what’s left to explore? Cat people! On her 16th birthday, Chloe King (Skyler Samuels, The Gates) finds out she’s part of an ancient race called the Mai and starts to develop cat-like abilities. Benjamin Stone (10 Things I Hate About You), who plays Chloe’s classmate and fellow Mai, Alek, is quick to point out they’re not exactly like cats. “We don’t like milk or [have] fleas,” he jokes. “And you won’t find me randomly in the background of a scene just scratching the hell out of a wall.” But you will see Chloe showing off her new powers, which include super-hearing, agility, strength and, yes, even claws. “I’m kicking people, pouncing on people,” reports Samuels. “I’m throwing punches, flying, jumping over cars” — not the most under-the-radar stuff when you’re just striving to be a normal teenager.

CHANCE FOR HIGH DRAMA | Says Samuels, a nefarious group called The Order is out “to kill all the Mai,” and they plan to start with Chloe, who’s the only Mai with nine lives. Amy Peitz (Aliens in America), who plays Chloe’s mom, hints that the teen’s MIA dad, who disappeared about six years after they adopted their little girl from Ukraine, “does play a part in the mystery” of what’s going on.

ROMANTIC POTENTIAL | Tons. In the premiere alone, Chloe has three potential love interests. But the two to keep your eye on are Alek, who takes Chloe under his wing, and Brian (Friday Night Lights‘ Grey Damon, actually getting to talk!), who is immediately drawn to Chloe upon his return to the city. “Chloe and I have a very strong connection,” teases Damon. “But she’s starting to develop feelings for [Alek].” Look for a Mai rule about kissing to make matters even more complicated. Adds Samuels: “Our little love triangle [is] taking some very unexpected twists. Season 1 is full of lots of steamy, romantic mysteries.”

WATCH THIS IF YOU LIKE… | The mythology and action of The Vampire Diaries mixed in with some Buffy. Not only does Chloe have slayer-like abilities and a forbidden romance that makes Buffy/Angel look easy, but she’s also hiding the truth from her clueless, single parent mom. Sound familiar?
