Parenthood closes out its sophomore season tonight on NBC (10/9c) with an emotionally-charged episode that ties up a handful of loose ends while leaving several others dangling. But it’s an off screen cliffhanger that has fans biting their nails down to nubs: Will the sublime family drama stick around for a third season?
“I’m cautiously optimistic,” exec producer Jason Katims tells TVLine. “We’ve made the episodes as good as we possible could. There’s nothing we can do except hope for the best.”
In the plus column for Parenthood is the fact that new NBC president Robert Greenblatt is a big champion of the show. “Bob is a supporter,” says Katims. “He has been very positive. The feedback we’ve been getting from everyone continues to get stronger and stronger, so I think that’s a good sign as well. It’s all positive, but we just don’t know yet.”
Luckily, tonight’s closer — which I’ve seen and highly recommend — can play as either a season or a series finale. Katims, however, insists, “I wasn’t thinking of it as a series finale. I thought of it as a season finale. On the other hand, in any finale – whether it’s a season or series – you want some sense of resolution. The audience has earned that. It’s always about striking the balance.”
