Dirty Dancing Ratings Remake

Ratings: Dirty Dancing Gives ABC a Little Lift; Arrow, SVU and Empire Rise

Oh, Baby! ABC’s Dirty Dancing delivered 6.6 million total viewers and a 1.4 demo rating, giving the network its most-watched Wednesday in nearly seven months (since the CMA Awards) and its best hump day rating since April 5.

TVLine readers gave the redo that nobody asked for an average grade of “D-“; be sure to peruse Andy Swift’s “burning questions” here.

Elsewhere on the night….

THE CW | Thursday-bound Arrow (1.72 mil/0.6, average TVLine reader grade of “A”) drew its best audience since Feb. 1 while ticking up a tenth in the demo. The 100 (910K/0.3, reader grade “A-“) added some eyeballs while steady in the demo.

NBC | SVU (6.1 mil/1.3, reader grade “B-“) ticked up with its two-hour finale.

FOX | Shots Fired (3.4 mil/0.9) rose a tenth with its finale, while Empire (6.9 mil/2.5, reader grade “B”) wrapped Season 3 with its best numbers since Dec. 7 and March 22, respectively.

CBS | The Survivor (8.5 mil/1.9) finale and its reunion show (5.8 mil/1.3) matched their previous numbers.

I hope someone makes sure the brass at ABC realize that people only watched Dirty Dancing so they could rip on it.

  2. Joey Padron says:

Glad Arrow did well in the ratings. Hope the show does well when they move to Thursday nights this fall.

  3. Julia says:

People only watched Dirty Dancing to see how terrible it was! Don’t let the numbers fool you.

  4. MMD says:

I am stunned that many people watched Dirty Dancing!!! It didn’t even occur to me to glance at it, not only because of the reviews but because I cherish the original.
    ..
Matt can you tell if those ratings were sustained throughout the entire 3 hours?

    • Matt Webb Mitovich says:

      Excellent question.

      6.6 mil/1.3 / 6.5 mil/1.3 / 6.8 mil/1.4 / 6.6 mil/1.3 / 6.3 mil/1.3 / 6.8 mil/1.4

      So… yep!

      • MMD says:

Wow, absolutely stunned! Thanks Matt for answering.

I’m guessing that people only stuck with it hoping that it would improve. I never gave it a second thought about watching it. My mum would’ve slaughtered me if I did because DD is her all time favorite movie.

I guess you can call it a win for ABC but those numbers aren’t much better than what their comedies were doing and I suppose since this movie was getting so much negativity and bad reviews yes it was good for ABC. Really good night for Empire and SVU and Survivor just keeps on going

  6. Piers says:

The fact that DD did well is an indictment of all current prime time TV offerings. The choices are so pitiful that only PBS is worth watching with an occasional segue to Game Show Network.

  7. Fiona Harrison says:

Due to reviews on Dirty Dancing 2017, I thought it wasn’t all that bad – till the ending. I watched with an open mind as if I hadn’t seen the original. Abigail was great and original, I mean who could possibly be a perfect dancer within a holiday period. Colt was brilliant. The late Patrick was great 30 years ago but there is a new Johnny Castle now. The ending has to be corrected with a tv sequel with Johnny and Baby getting together again. These critics that write bad reviews – obviously you watched it for 3 hours so it couldn’t have been that bad or you would have turned the channel.
