Anderson Cooper Apology

Anderson Cooper 'Genuinely Sorry' for 'Crude' Remark Made During AC360 — Was the Apology Necessary?

Anderson Cooper is the latest cable news host to apologize for an ill-advised comment made on the air.

The AC360 host tweeted on Friday that he is “genuinely sorry” for an incident that took place on his CNN show, in which he told political commentator and Trump supporter Jeffrey Lord that “if [Trump] took a dump on his desk, you would defend it.”

Cooper’s remark came on the heels of Lord saying he “[doesn’t] care” what information Trump gives to the Russians, because “he’s the president of the United States.”

Here’s the moment in question, followed by Cooper’s apology:

Tell us: Was Cooper right to apologize? Or was his follow-up tweet simply unnecessary? Vote in our poll below, then hit the comments with all of your thoughts.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

Much worse has been said. He didn’t need to apologize but that just shows how genuine he is. Anderson=❤️

    • MisterV says:

Sorry but he did need to apologize and his remarks would have been banned from this site… to put it in perspective.
That is the problem… a double standard based on your political beliefs.

      • Liz says:

What? Your statement makes 0 sense

      • Temperance says:

Nah, pretty much ever word out of Trump’s mouth is far worse. You’re confusing your distaste for the truth (or perhaps defecation) with the VASTLY more heinous problem of pathological lying and being a propagandist. Get your head on straight.

        • Lily says:

Woah, talk about exaggeration! Temperance… like Clinton, you give us liberals a bad name. This is so illogical and out there.

Also: True or false, AC’s statement was incredibly trashy. Why do any of us sink to that sort of level?

          • nuschler12 says:

            Lily
“You call us liberals a bad name?” Honey you can’t even spell unless “woah” is a neologism. (Google it).

CNN’s decision to keep paying Trump surrogates such as Jeffrey Lord is the problem here. Anderson is a REAL journalist…but every night he is supposed to listen to such idiots as Jeffrey or Conway or Huckabee’s daughter–it’s horrendous.

If CNN doesn’t change, Cooper should walk. Go anywhere else. CNN is what is trashy.

And Lily? You are the “trashy” one here. You’re a liberal? Define your views because MY view of liberals is a person with intelligence, who CAN SPELL!, and can’t see that Anderson is the victim here having to put up with surrogates. You HAVE to be a Trump supporter! How can what Anderson said compare in ANY way to Trump calling Obama “sick and bad” and calling the FBI director a showboat and a nut job. Trump who goes into the changing room of 14 y/o girls, who talks about sexual assault and that he can get away with it.
            You aren’t a liberal. You’re just stupid.

  2. padraicjacob says:

The comment was directed at POTUS. It was directed at the unflinching, blindly loyal defense that Jeffrey Lord provides, so I don’t think that he necessarily owed an apology.

  3. dan says:

To give Jeffrey Lord credit (and I’m no fan), he laughed at Anderson’s comment and didn’t seem to get upset or offended. He seems to know that some (all?) of his comments supporting POTUS are ridiculous. Anderson simply said the type of thing many of us have been thinking.

    • MisterV says:

dan, Speak for yourself, not everyone else. Many of us think differently than you.

      • Temperance says:

        That’s not ‘thinking’ you’re doing.

      • lrdslvrhnd says:

“many of us” != “all of us”. Which is to say that dan wasn’t speaking for “everyone else”, just himself and “many of us”.

        • Temperance says:

According to the poll, less than 20% isn’t ‘many of us’. It’s about the same percentage of brainwashed noitwits that voted for the sociopathic traitor in the first place.

  4. Jimmy says:

Yeah, Cooper’s comment crossed the professional line. There’s no reason to stoop to the level of a Jeffrey Lord. You know the best way to solve this problem, stop booking an habitual liar like Jeffrey Lord on your show.

    • peterwdawson says:

They really have less of an excuse to book him than they do Kellyanne Conway. Both have terrible reps, but at least she works at the White House. Lord’s probably the best living example of a sock-puppet in the insult sense, so they really don’t even need him to speak, they could replace him with a dartboard covered in Pro-Trump talking points. You can defend Trump, sure, but at least show some reason to justify why you’re flesh and blood and not the dart board.

      • Temperance says:

Completely true. Inviting him to speak is like buying ad filling a lie fountain.

        • nuschler12 says:

Temperance–agree! CNN’s owner thinks that fighting sells. They MUST get rid of these stupid surrogates! Jeffrey laughs at EVERYTHING. He’s a low IQ creep that needs to go. Get rid of every Trump surrogate and go back to investigative journalism! Looks like the Jerry Springer show these days.

    • Ash carder says:

      Lol wowzer

    • Temperance says:

LOLOLOLOLOL! When Cooper has sold his soul and lied a billion times for cash, then you can compare them. Until then, cons are just wrong-headed liars brainwashed into beliveing ‘fake polite’ is ok, but lies are great!

    • AnnieM says:

But, what Anderson Cooper said about him is *true* – Jeffrey Lord is really a Special Case – I think he really does believe in all of the nonsense he’s ever said. And he always says it with such a wide-eyed look, without any of the usual laugh & smirk of your average Trumpette. That may be what has kept this doofus on CNN for so long, his lack of smartypants-ness. In any case, Jeffrey Lord’s near constant presence on CNN these many months has earned him the nickname ‘StupidFace’ in our house.

    • Dl)ian oneil says:

Why? Fox interviews transparent make you want to vomit CNN peoole all the time. Meanwhile all the liberal stations are same old boaring bs with no substace to back it up. They have nothing on Trump and yet waste time when they should be reporting on real news such as north korea, jobs, economy, keeping ameeica safe instead of instigating riots.

  5. TV Gord says:

I was shocked and outraged by Anderson’s unprofessional behavior, and I can assure you that as soon as I stopped laughing, I damn well furrowed my brow right away!

  6. Tomm Huntre says:

Evidently CNN is more forgiving of its hosts’ poor behavior than is FOX.

    • Ron says:

Sarcasm or sincerity? Because it’s very difficult to tell now in the era of caricature Trump. Just in case you’re being serious, I feel the need to say that this is about as far away on the spectrum as you can get from the racist remarks and sexual assault on women recurring on a regular basis over at Fox.

      • MisterV says:

Ron, I guess the hasty departures of hosts at CNN and MSNBC over the years must have missed your radar.

        • Jimmy says:

I was just going to say if you think it’s only at Fox News than your crazy. But you beat me to it.

          • Temperance says:

The haven’t been any rapists and sex offenders fleeing from other networks, bub. Just FOX, just em masse.

          • Jimmy says:

Temperance for some reason I can’t respond to your comment. But there definitely has been other sexual harrasment claims. I like to comment based on facts and not make these all encompassing comments. I’ve seen these all encompassing comments throughout this comment section a lot of them from a certain poster. Do you know who likes to make these all encompassing, extreme adjectives comments? President Trump. It’s funny that I see that here in this comment section.

    • Temperance says:

You mean excellent, truthful behavior. Fake politeness doesn’t mean much compared to lies and propaganda. The right has gone so far off the deep end into insanity, they thinkg ‘fake polite’ means something, but pathological lying, lying for cash, and generating propaganda is just fine.

      • Jimmy says:

This is not a “right” issue. It’s a political issue. Sometimes your political affiliation can blind you to this very fact. Pathological lying is a problem on both sides. It’s what they do to stay out of trouble. Pay to play, embezzlement, financial shenanigans is a problem on both sides. And propaganda is also a tool on both sides. I wouldn’t call it a problem but you have to convince people about the importance of your platform. Also fake news is a problem on both sides. I believe it’s better to have good character, high integrity people in congress and in politics overall. When you pick a side and you disregard all the evils of that side it only makes the problems of politics tougher to fix.

    • Temperance says:

Apparently, you’ve missed the nearly unending departures from FOX for ACTUAL crimes. You’ve also seemed to miss FOX News’ up to 81% LIE rating.

  7. AngelWasHere says:

No apology needed imo. It was funny and true. 💩😂

  8. Haz says:

So sick of the double standard. If Sean Hannity or Tucker Carlson would have said it people would still be crying and CNN would have nonstop coverage but if Cooper does it you find 101 different way to defend him. These are the same people who were not offended by Colberts Putin/Trump comment comment but lost their minds over James Woods comment.

  9. Douglas from Brazil says:

Anderson is on a roll. First, the eye roll at Kellyanne and now this. Gotta love the man!

  10. A. Simmons says:

What Anderson said to Lord was right on the money! Soooooo tired of these “Trumpets” saying whatever Trump wants to do its alright! I PRAY he doesnt get his finger on the Red Button!!!! You go Anderson!!!

  11. Mike Lee says:

If you live in a glass house you shouldn’t throw rocks. Of course he should have apologized. Surprised me coming from someone who supported Madam Clinton and the illegal immigrant free for all.

  12. Deb says:

Honestly i wish EVERYONE would just stop apologizing and just be their authentic self. Stand up for your viewpoint . Stop apologizing if your viewpoint doesnt match everyone elses…we are not cattle.

  13. Shawn says:

No need to apologize. His comment was accurate.

  14. Gary says:

I wouldn’t mind a comment like that from a commentator like Maddow or Hannity. From Cooper, I’m glad he apologized, I hold him to a higher standard and respect him as a news man. Agree or disagree with the comment, it didn’t elevate the conversation which is something sorely needed these days. I know a website comment section probably isn’t going to agree, but…

    • Temperance says:

Copper was telling the truth. His illustration was a little colorful, but the fact remains his comment is TRUTHFUL.

      • Jimmy says:

How is it truthful? I don’t know what the truth means to you, but it’s certainly a sarcastic comment. Perhaps a guess but I wouldn’t call it the truth.

        • Temperance says:

Cooper wasn’t being sarcastic. bub. He was pointing out the TRUTH.

          • Jimmy says:

He was being sarcastic. He was trying to make a point. And it wasn’t and is not true. It could be true based on your opinion or based on your ideology, or your dislike for the interviewee or trump. But it is not true based on reality. That type of discussion about defecation would never be had.

          • Jimmy says:

Also I’m glad he apologized. That type of discourse should not be occurring. I bet the Trump haters hate him due to his rhetoric. There’s no need to stoop to that level and turn into a hypocrit. But I’m sure it’s already too late because the 2 party system. There’re a ton of hypocrites on both sides and they call each other out for doing the things that they personally do.

  15. Jonathan Lee says:

    He was right!

  16. Amy says:

Trump never appologizes for his immature/ignorant remarks. Parents cannot even teach their children to respect this man as POTUS with the words that come of his mouth

  17. Nadine says:

Disappointing coming from a journalist stature as mr. Anderson Cooper.. I’m a trump supporter and a long-time Anderson Cooper fan the thing I’ve always admired about mr. Cooper the most was his utmost politeness on air so yes it is very disappointing he is one of those journalists that you come to respect highly. One of the very few.

  18. Evan says:

The comment is fine…the thing irritates me though is that cooper like darn near the media attacks everything trump does as automatically as those who he say would defend everything…I’m not saying he is perfect far from it, but trump could come up with a plan to immediately ensure world peace, end world hunger and turn the planet into a garden of eden paradise and many people would b against it just cause they didn’t like some or most things he died in the past…

    • grazelled says:

Had Trump died in the past there would be no need for Cooper to apologize in the present nor would Trump be president today. I’m a centrist Independent and understand the need party loyalists have to defend their person but in America we used to have the right to point out our opinions. Cooper could have used a less colorful example but otherwise I don’t see a problem with his statement. He disagrees with Lord, so what.

As for Trump, people like me who are Independents plus pragmatic logical thinkers, as we watch his actions, most of us are disliking him in the present not for what Trump did in the past but for being a dangerous egomaniac that throws tantrums and takes offense at insignificant slights. He’s a leader, act like one. If Trump truly believes no political leader has been treated “worse or unfairly” than he has, then he needs to start studying history…wish he could have sit down with A. Lincoln, MLK Jr., Mandela, plus a stadium full of great men and women of the past who were horribly treated.

  19. badgerly says:

No apology necessary !! There’s just so much people can take, job or no job !! Anderson and his thinking colleagues (you know, the intelligent ones?) have to be wondering, as everyone is, when this nightmare is going to end.
Also, I don’t know why whenever Drumpf or any of his cohorts holds a press conference, people aren’t walking out, laughing their heads off.

  20. Dan Yeager says:

It doesn’t matter what context or to whom a reporter is speaking. They should never make that kind of rhetoric in any report, especially to an interviewee. They should never, professionally, say anything like that in an opinion story.
Perhaps he shouldn’t apologize. Perhaps what he needs to do is remain unbiased and report objectively.

    • CC says:

Yes. Can we please bring back professionalism in broadcast journalism? There are too many opinions being stated as facts these days. People want the facts from their news, not the anchor’s opinion. Opinion programs have their place, but we need to have both, and differentiate the two more clearly. Or maybe that’s just me.

    • Temperance says:

You mean what Cooper nearly exclusively does, and no one on FOX News has managed for it’s entire existence?

      • Morisot says:

Please, put down the knitting needles…

      • Jimmy says:

I get it hyperbole. Fox News is certainly bias but they report all news whether good or bad against the conservatives. Some of the other news channels just omit certain news worthy stories that doesn’t fit the news channels narrative.

        • Temperance says:

It wasn’t hyperbole. Cooper was perfectly correct – and Lord has apologize for far, far worse. He’s a paid liar, after all.

          • Jimmy says:

Temperance I was responding to your previous comment and not Cooper’s. Words like never and all are very extreme. Based on your comments, your probably not a Fox News fan and consumer. I’m sure Fox News has some stories that were professionally conducted and reported. They’re definitely bias especially the pundits, but discrediting everything they’ve done for their entire existence is hyperbole. But you’re free to disagree which should be the case for every single person who has an opinion. But apparently diversity is crucial for our society except for diversity in opinions.

  21. If only Trump would apologise for the vitriol he’s spewed.

  22. Gospino says:

It was crude. I don’t disagree with it, but it was crude. Nothing truly horrible like a few people have recently been fired over, of course. The apology was good.

  23. Alyson says:

He didn’t need to be apologizing at all. CNN should be apologizing for paying Jeffery Lord to be on TV. What an embarrassment that guy is.

    • Jimmy says:

I’m not a Jeffrey lord fan but we all know there’s Jeffrey lords on both sides. There are also Jeffrey lords in congress on both sides. They’re more worried about their party than doing the job for their constituents. Also there’s a lot of people on here that are Jeffrey lords but they like to tell the kettle that it’s black.

  24. Ron says:

It might not have been the most eloquent thing Anderson has ever said and perhaps a bit beneath him, but the context in which it was said was totally fine. It wasn’t offensive, and much worse has been said on air. And Jeffrey Lord is such a repugnant human being, that, honestly, invoking the image of feces when talking to him seems perfectly fine. No apology was needed for this. The only thing for which Anderson Cooper needs to apologize is not being next to me when I wake up in the morning.

  25. MMD says:

I personally don’t think that Anderson needed to apologize, however, being the professional that he is, he did. The comment needed to be said because it’s true and how Anderson has held his tongue for this long is absolutely beyond me. I swear that if Drumpf blew up half the country Jeffery Lord would find a way to defend him as well as bring Reagan into the conversation. It gets so tiresome for everyone!

  26. tahimar says:

That’s fine with me, Anderson had a Kathy Griffith moment. Love them both together!

  27. Chuck says:

He should apologize for always having Lord on his show.

  28. HEYScott says:

Cooper typical liberal idiot do as I say not as I do .

    • Temperance says:

nah, that’s just conservatives. He literally did nothing but tell the truth. He was apologizing for mentioning ‘poop’ – which is apparently the kryptonite of straight what men. They all seem to run screaming like little girls when something women deal with simply matter-of-factly all day.

  29. Sara says:

If conservatives have to apologize for every little remark, then so do liberals

  30. MisterV says:

Plastic faced Anderson Cooper usually bores viewers to death with his low key manner.
What was revealed is the real Anderson Cooper underneath the facade.
He is not a nice person and not a very good journalist, for what it is worth.

  31. Kristina says:

Was definitely a bit unprofessional. But he had the presence of mind to apologize right after and I think that should be that.

  32. Shar says:

News broadcasters should do just that and not become the news. There’s frustration on both sides warranted or not and the media should take a good hard look at their part in the election results. If it bleeds it leads indeed.

  33. Morisot says:

Anderson Cooper chose to throw “a dump” … and ended up stinking of it

  34. Eurydice says:

If he felt he should apologize, then he was right to do so. It doesn’t matter if others have been worse, Cooper has personal standards and he should try to rise above the herd. Somebody has to be an example of good behavior.

  35. Ethel says:

If Trump never had to apologize for his claim he could kill someone in Times Square and people would still vote for him, AC does not have to apologize for telling the truth

    • Jimmy says:

People have to apologize for telling the truth all the time. That’s just the way it is due to pc.

      • Temperance says:

There are always standards in conversation. Who knew that conservative men run like little girls at the mention of poop or vaginas.

  36. Douglas Schmidt says:

Pot meet kettle. Trump can do everything that cooper wants and cooper would oppose it anyway because his hatred for trump means more to him and liberals then the good of the country. And they continue to prove my point time and time again, week after week.

    • larry says:

The key Douglas is to keep standing up to them, never back down. Take solace in the fact that Donald Trump makes every one of them nauseous…..

  37. Roo says:

He doesn’t have to apologize for telling the truth. Jeffrey Lord is a pitiful human being..idolizing Raegan is one thing.. But Trump? Ugh

  38. Eli says:

If Sean Hannity said this about a democratic pundit defending Obama everyone would be calling for his firing and execution.

  39. larry says:

Cooper is nothing more than the typical liberal gay guy who hates any heterosexual guy who makes fun of his lifestyle. Newsflash Cooper, most of us straight guys make fun of you and we always will.

    • Temperance says:

Wow, there is a whole lot of insecurity there. I’ll bet you run from the mention of vaginas, too.

    • TV Gord says:

I might respect your opinion more if you didn’t bring who he;s attracted to into it. What does that have to do with anything. You probably have gay people in your own family, but they’re too afraid to tell you because of your attitude. That’s a damn shame.

  40. Missy says:

    What?
I don’t think an apology was necessary… at all.

  41. Chaosrainz says:

Not a Trump fan, but HATE that term and find it extremely crude and distasteful. I guess he didn’t HAVE to apologize but glad he did.

  42. Emme says:

Cooper simply reiterated something Trump himself said about his supporters, though, IIRC, Trump said he could walk down a street in NYC, gun someone down, and his supporters would still defend him. So, by that, IMO, what Cooper was saying (defecation) was milder than what Trump has said (murder) about Trump’s own supporters.
    .
However, I can’t help but think that this kind of talk does tend to normalize Trump’s crudeness in increments the more reporters like Cooper think saying stuff like that is the right way to go. But then, I still believe leading by example is a pretty powerful tactic.

  43. Luis Roman says:

It’s a simple rule – you don’t sink to the level of your guest. Lorde is a raging simpleton, AC has been putting up with his b.s. for more than a year and he finally had enough. Totally understandable, but still not acceptable. Good for AC for owning up to it. I’m still glad he said it.

  44. Gina says:

Sounded like a valid question for Lord. That man can excuse anything done by trump.

  45. yellerkitty says:

I believe he was right to apologize, not because his remarks were any worse than many other comments that have been aired (including many made by Trump, himself), but merely because Anderson Cooper is a first-rate journalist and gentleman, and he was merely displaying those qualities by his apology.
The fact is, he was entirely correct in his assessment of the situation.

  46. Pierce says:

He needed to apologize because it was not professional of him to make such a comment. I do understand sometimes people get caught up in the moment and forget to prevent certain thoughts from spilling out of their mouth. Regardless if you agree with his comment, you have to admit it was unprofessional. So glad he did the right thing and apologized.

  47. Dl)ian oneil says:

Anderson Cooper used to be one of the most respected ancormen for CNN. Unfortunately, he has let his personal views interfere with reporting real news. So now he is fake news and I will no longer watch him. In fact I used to watch fox and switch to CNN. Now I just have to watch fox. Yes they also have a couple of reporters that put their own spin. But overall they report on the facts. Not theuamable sources like CNN and aCNBC. They dont care about real news such as north korea, fighting global warming, jobs, economy, renuable energy. Millions of us voted for aDonald Trump. As a one of the milliin independent voters you conviced me to vote for him because I finally saw thru the fake news. Was going to vote for Hilliary until she was handed a few questions from CNN Donna Brazil FAakENEWS
