Fox's Exorcist Renewed for Season 2

Here’s some news that may turn your head: Fox has renewed The Exorcist for a second season, TVLine has learned.

Sprung off of the Academy Award-nominated 1973 film of the same name, The Exorcist averaged 1.9 million total viewers and a 0.7 rating on Friday nights, equaling or besting Fox hour-longs Rosewood (cancelled), Sleepy Hollow (cancelled) and Scream Queens (fate TBD) in the demo.

Having told a very specific (and ultimately surprising) story born of the feature film, Season 2 of the contemporary psychological TV thriller will “open a new chapter of the iconic franchise.”

VERY surprised by this one. I would have preferred Pitch but as usual no one asked me :-)

  2. Karen T. says:

YAAAAYYYYYY! I had almost lost hope. This was a great adaption of the story and pretty creepy. Thanks Fox!

  3. FOXyousuck says:

Shameful. Thanks for crapping all over the masterpiece that is The Exorcist. The scariest movie of all time.

  4. Susie says:

The best show no one watched!

    • Wrstlgirl says:

For me it was just okay and I found some of the episode really boring. But I’ll watch it again unless it conflicts with something else I like better.

  5. Jason M says:

It had some really amazing talent on and off screen. Really happy FOX is giving it a second go around. Still super puzzled that Scream Queens has yet to be cancelled, which makes me wonder if it is going to be creatively rebooted.

    • Guy says:

I’m still shocked it even got a 2nd season in the first place. Fox’s love for Ryan Murphy is clouding their judgment on this one. The show is utter garbage and the ratings were awful. Just let it die and don’t waste airtime on it.

  6. Van says:

    Yay!!!
    I loved this show

  7. Spikenalabama says:

Seriously??????? They cancelled Rosewood but keep this crap!?!?!?!?!?!?!? Unbelievable.

  8. chadcronin says:

I thought many of the episodes were very suspenseful and am curious to see what they come up with this season

  9. J.B. says:

Not really surprised. Entertainment Weekly had been saying for a while it would get renewed.

  10. Lyndy says:

Effing FOX! You cancel Pitch…but renew this! WOW

  11. Max brown says:

I guess scream queens is cancelled

  12. Jko says:

I had a feeling this would happen. Haven’t watched but am always curious at to what will stay vs go. Fox still needs to make announcements about 24: Legacy, Prison Break, New Girl, Scream Queens.

    • Wrstlgirl says:

Prison Break is only half way through it’s season so I don’t know if we’ll hear anything about it for awhile. That and I thought Miller said they would only do one season. I could be wrong about that.

  13. Dr. Opossum says:

I am mystified as to what the numbers were that made this financially viable for a second season. But good for this horror underdog in making it through!

  14. Ash says:

    Yes! Can’t wait!

  15. Akcelt says:

Glad to see. Amazing acots in season 1. Hope the at least keep the 2 priests – Alfonso Herrera and Ben Daniels. Absolutely live Ben Daniels.

Storyline wasn’t great but have seen much worse. Can’t wait for 2nd season.

  16. Wooster182 says:

Will Alfonso Herrera stay on? He’s the reason I watched in the first place.

  17. kmw says:

I am not surprised The execs at FOX not too long ago hinted that it would get renewed. While I am happy for the fans of this show you have to wonder why this rated better for them than Pitch

  18. 1idpete says:

I am thrilled to see that Fox went with the more realistic and true to life Exorcist than Pitch!

  19. Nate W. says:

Really?! This show over Sleepy Hollow. 😲. Seriously, I don’t understand wtf the thought process is on this one.

  20. Haz says:

This show was actually really good and suspenseful so I’m glad to see it renewed. If they are smart they will pair this with The X Files to bring in viewers and have a sci-fi/horror night.

  21. Jason says:

    Really!?…Did not see that coming.

  22. Jared says:

Now I can watch the first season. Is S2 a continuation with the same characters or will it more of an anthology?

  23. cporter33 says:

This is great news. Such a well written show, and loved the 2 priests. Can’t wait to see what happens in Season 2. Thanks FOX for renewing!!!

  24. TerClark says:

Yay! Now we can see what happens to Reagan. But Hannah Kasulka slayed as Casey. That possession will be hard to beat.

  25. Chuck says:

This is the best news I heard all day!

  26. Ray says:

    Would rather have Scream Queens

  27. Stringfellow says:

I actually enjoyed this show -especially once the twist was revealed to how it connected to the films. So happy this diabolical story continues.

  28. arlene says:

Very pleased this was renewed. It’s a lot different from Pitch, obviously, the only other new FOX show I enjoyed. I knew that wasn’t returning despite the wealth of treasures noted here by other fans. The Exorcist, cunningly written, is thrilling, beautifully produced. Geena Davis has a star turn in this show, lighting the way for the actor who plays her husband, and the girls who play her daughters. Ben Daniels is also, as always, a treat to watch, and to listen to. I hope people who missed this find a way to catch up and tune in to season two.

  29. Jerri says:

Really? This stuff they bring back?! Fox, what are you guys high on?

  30. Jason says:

Since no one else has said it I will. Clearly the producers of the exorcist must have done a deal with the devil.

  31. Michael says:

Thank you, Fox. Now if Fox really wants me to get down on my knees and worship it, it should renew Scream Queens already for Season 3. Nothing would make me happier. C’mon Ryan, beg a little. They’ll cave.

  32. Susan says:

    Horrible show!

  33. Marie Blouin says:

    Yay!!!! Great story, great actors!

  34. Penny says:

I’m just going to reiterate what other commenters already have… this got renewed over Pitch?! Fox has lost their minds.

    • Annie Sisk says:

Just a matter of taste. I did not take to Pitch. Intriguing idea, a little wobbly on the execution. The Exorcist, we enjoyed from start to finish.

  35. Michael Summerset says:

I can’t say which is more surprising: this or the Timeless renewal.

  36. Annie Sisk says:

I am THRILLED. I quite enjoyed this one. Love Ben Daniels and Alfonso Herrera.

  37. Stephanie Shannon says:

Why? The last episode seemed like an end..not a cliffhanger. What’s the point?

  38. One of my favorite shows of all time!!!!!!
