Saturday Night Live: The 10 Best Sketches of Season 42 (So Far)

Saturday Night Live‘s current season got off to a great start, and it was only partially thanks to Donald Trump.

Though the president-elect provided the Not Ready for Primetime Players with an extraordinary amount of material, the show excelled — at times, even more so — with some of its apolitical humor.

With the late-night program on hiatus through Jan. 14, we here at TVLine decided now would be a good time to look back at SNL‘s fall run and handpick the ten best sketches. Among them, you’ll find a beloved Tom Hanks personality, the revival of fan-favorite characters from Breaking Bad and Chappelle’s Show, and yes, at least one appearance by both Alec Baldwin’s Trump and Kate McKinnon’s Hillary Clinton.

(FWIW, the gallery sticks exclusively to sketch segments, meaning standout moments like Lin-Manuel Miranda’s monologue and McKinnon’s Leonard Cohen tribute were not eligible for consideration.)

Peruse the gallery to your right — or click here for direct access — then tell us in the comments if you agree or disagree with our ranking. And let us know which sketches would have made your own hypothetical Top 10.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  1. Kevin says:

The Crucible Cast Party is my favorite so far this season.

  2. dude says:

I’m sorry but no, David S. Pumpkins is not funny and has never been funny and is certainly not a “Hall of Fame” worthy sketch. Stop trying to make David S. Pumpkins happen Gretchen!

    • Patrick says:

That one sucked. This is the only site that doesn’t acknowledge how bad that skit was.

    • Ron says:

My gosh, I’m glad I’m not the only one. It’s such a horrible, unfunny sketch. Not only is it not funny, but it’s extremely annoying. It honestly makes me irrationally angry. How it’s on this list (let alone ranked so high) is certainly beyond me.

    • Tom says:

I mean, didn’t they pan a pretty nearly identical one with Larry David? The one with the cop training or whatever it is?

  3. Peter says:

Are you kidding? SNL has not been funny for SO long! Their political humor has gotten so lame as to be unwatchable. Time to cancel this dreck and make room for something more deserving.

  4. Walrus says:

The current cast, and all casts since (and including) the second one, are not the Not Ready For Primetime Players. I’ve seen this mistake on TVLine before. Only the cast with Belushi, Radner, et. al., were known as the Not Ready For Primetime Players.

My personal opinion of SNL– You truly have to be some kind of unstable idiot to watch this show berate our President and our Country. This is next thing to TREASON against our GREAT COUNTRY. Try doing this in any other country such as Mexico,Russia,China or Iran. You would either be inprisioned or killed, maybe even beheaded. I am sick and tired of watching the news and seeing highlights of your insane idiots ( for lack of a better term ) . wish you people would voluntary leave our UNITED STATES of AMERICA. you should all be ashammed of your selves ! you are a DISGRACE to our civilization !
