Seth Meyers to News Media: 'Alt-Right' Is a Nazi Movement, Don't Normalize It

Seth Meyers on Wednesday took the news media to task for “bending over backwards” to normalize the alt-right movement.

In a segment called “Hey!,” the Late Night host dinged the likes of CNN and The Los Angeles Times for tip-toeing around the fact that the alt-right is comprised of white supremacists. Citing their use of wacky headlines and images focused on their alleged hipster aesthetic, Meyers urged the fourth estate to take fears about the rise of white supremacy under President-elect Donald Trump seriously and to refer to those who make up the movement as Nazis.

“If it looks like a duck and talks like a duck and steps like a goose, it’s a Nazi,” he argued. “And hey, this is America, and if we’ve ever done anything we can all be proud of, it was defeating the Nazis… Calling Nazis and white supremacists the ‘alt-right’ is like calling O.J. Simpson a cutlery enthusiast.”

I was tempted to comment on the subject and general but I’m just gonna steer clear of that and instead be a fun fact semantic: the Nazis did goose step for a time but it would be more accurate to reference that kind of march in regards to the Soviets, who did it for far longer.

    • Patrick says:

Lots of militaries use that style of marching. It is very difficult to master and instills a great deal of discipline in those that use it. But the Nazis really were known for it.

      • peterwdawson says:

Yeah my point was goose stepping, in terms of length of use, would be more synonymous with the Soviets instead of the Nazis in relation to a nation involved in World War II. Still, length of use doesn’t always dictate notoriety.

  2. liame says:

He’s right, the more exposure these monsters get the more they become comfortable with spreading their hate propaganda and normalizing it. The people of America already no what they stand for we don’t need to hear it from their disgusting mouths. The town I live in is full of racist and a few have tried me and when I don’t respond the way they expect “so they can twist the story to their advantage”, they back off. #gobacktohell!

  3. E. says:

Seth is doing a fantastic job lately under impossible circumstances. He’s keeping it funny and really telling the truth without normalizing the situation. It’s exactly what we need right now.

    • Mary says:

True but unfortunately it will fall on deaf ears to the majority who refuse to open their eyes. It is a little to late IMO.

      • kayw4 says:

Yes although I think it’s important to hold on to the fact that it wasn’t the majority (of the country, that is) and there’s still no majority support for Trump and his white supremacists. It sure does feel like the majority sometimes because they’re so loud and recklessly power-hungry – but they’re not the majority and I take some (small, cold) comfort in that. Also, I agree about Seth Meyers, he’s really stepped up lately.

    • Marti May says:

Way to go, Seth! Keep speaking up. We need more people to critically interpret what is happening with t_rump and the USA. It is imperative that we not become the FSA (Fascist States of America.)

  4. jj says:

Done with Seth Meyers too. Tired of misleading and outright wrong stories being used as a basis for bashing half the country. We are not racists any more than all Democrats are not members of black lives matters. Liberals lost. Learn things from it.

    • Liz says:

I would like to note that “alt-right” is not intended to be (and shouldn’t be) synonymous with “Republicans” or “conservatives,” so I’m not sure what “half of the country” you’re referring to.

    • Adi says:

whiny b*tch. he’s talking about the alt-right and not all Republicans. and he’s 100% right. also: Trump got 2,5 votes less than Hillary Clinton. and no one likes her. maybe your “win” isn’t as great as you think.

    • Joey says:

Just sayin’, but if you’re offended by what Meyers said, it’s not because you’re a Republican, or even a conservative. It’s because you’re a white nationalist or Neo-Nazi if you’d prefer. It means you agree with the likes of Richard Spencer, who is a burning garbage heap of a man.

    • Angela says:

No, the right are the ones who need to learn. They just elected a whiny man-child who can’t go a day without picking a fight with someone on Twitter because they were “meeeeean” to him (god help us if a world leader criticizes him), and who, based on all the accounts of those who’ve met with him thus far, has shown a staggering lack of understanding of the job he’s about to take on. He seems legit shocked at just how hard this job is. He’s already flip-flopped on practically any political view he has, he’s picking the most laughable and horrific cabinet ever, and he’s emboldened the racist/sexist/xenophobic parts of the country in disturbing ways (members of the KKK were celebrating his win, but yeah, that’s totally not something to worry about, right?).
Those of us who didn’t vote for Trump have every right to be troubled by this, and call it out where possible. We’re in this mess because of these alt-right groups, because of Trump supporters who cared more about the fact that Trump “told it like it is” whatever that means, than the fact that he didn’t have a freaking clue as to how to run this country, and because of people whose views on the world are stuck in the 1950s (if not earlier). There’s been all this talk lately about how fake news played a big role in this election turning out like it did, ’cause god forbid anyone bother to check the legitimacy of the news getting passed around on social media sites.
It’s very distressing, and Trump supporters are going to look even more foolish in the end than they do now.

  5. Nick says:

Seth is an idiot. The US had no agenda to engage the Nazis and resisted involvement until Pearl Harbor. We then declared war on Japan and Germany in turn declared war on us. As for white supremacy; most are totally sick of others trying to co-opt what aren’t their accomplishments. And, for the record, most people regard all but sub-Saharan blacks as white including Hispanics, Semites and Asians.

  6. SJ says:

It’s not, though. I’m not an alt-righter but I do agree with some of their views like Western Exceptionalism. There are those who take it to the extremes, to be sure, but most alt-righters aren’t like that.

    • Sam says:

Western Exceptionalism, sorry, makes you racist. Because you’re literally saying that the western way of life is better. Which ignores the cultures of other races. And is thus racist.

      • Spectre says:

I’m certainly not defending the alt-right (pieces of sh*t, all of them), but you also don’t have to pretend that everything is equal. if by “western way of life” you mean democracy, freedom, rule of law – yeah, that’s better than monarchs, dictators and religious fundamentalism like in major parts of the rest of the world. different doesn’t mean just as good. some cultures are better and some are stuck in medival times.

      • Tom says:

It is better. Every metric for success has shown this. Western nations are the most prosperous, fair, and healthy in the wolrd.

Not all cultures are equal. If you cNnot recognize that, then you have blinded yourself with political propagnda.

        • Joey says:

And why are people in non-Western nations not as prosperous as Western nations (in general)? Try colonialism. We invaded and plundered numerous nations, destroyed complete societies, stole their resources, and then blame their culture for not being as prosperous as ours? Please, call a proctologist, because I fear your head is somewhere it shouldn’t be.

      • SJ says:

It’s really not. The Western way of life is better and no one can deny it. I won’t apologize for what my culture has created and we’ve created a lot of good. Look at what the migrants from the third world are doing to our cities, our women and our social systems. As a German, I can tell you it’s not pretty. And it’s not racist to state facts. Our way of life is better. End of story.

  7. Jake says:

It really is Spring Time for Hitler….

    • tomboy says:

ahahaha, forget will smith, you are legend!! (now the melody will not leave my head lol) spring time for hitler and germany, la la la Greetings from Berlin! Btw, I know what nazi is, and Seth is soooo right :/

    • Charissa29 says:

Heh! Nice one! Spring time for Hitler! Though if we can get through the next four years without forcing muslims to wear yellow stars, I will be thrilled! THAT is how low I have set the bar for this President!

  8. AngelWasHere says:

It’s sad this is the world I live in. As a young African American women I’ve never been so rattled. It seems like we’re going backwards rather than forwards. Monsters like that shouldn’t be normalized or given a platform to spread their hate.

  9. AngelWasHere says:

Woman. Not women. lol Well to bring some levity to this disturbing situation….Alt-Right sounds like something on my keyboard. 😒

  10. Raul J says:

And Seth Meyers and his ilk on the loony left are the alt-left and they are no better than Communist Marxists. Certainly the most intolerant group are lefty loons like Meyers.

  11. Jj says:

Good for Seth. We need to stop normalizing the Fuhrer and the trash who voted for him.

  12. Squirrelly says:

Alt-right, ctrl-left…I think I’m just about ready to hit the delete key and hope I can shut down some processes!

  13. Hey, big lib Seth-why dont you STFU and as for now,,YOURE OUTTA HERE!

  14. James Adams says:

I mean, to be honest the media has been bending over backwards to destroy it and label it as a Nazi Movement. I much more fair assessment would be to say the Bernie Sanders movement are Marxist.
