Hairspray Live!: New Promo Reveals First Cast Performance Footage

Two weeks before NBC officially lifts the curtain on Hairspray Live!, the cast is giving eager fans a peek behind the scenes.

NBC on Monday released a new promo for the Dec. 7 event, featuring the first footage of the cast — which includes newcomer Maddie Baillio as dancing queen Tracy Turnblad — performing some of the musical’s biggest numbers.

The Tony Award-winning musical, which ran on Broadway from 2002 to 2009, takes place in 1960s Baltimore, where a rhythmic young woman (Baillio) uses her curves and cunning to fight racism and break down social barriers.

Additional cast members include Garrett Clayton (Teen Beach Movie) as local TV star Link Larkin, Jennifer Hudson (Smash) as record shop owner Motormouth Maybelle, Kristin Chenoweth (American Gods) as evil pageant queen Velma Von Tussle, Dove Cameron (Liv and Maddie) as Velma’s daughter Amber, Derek Hough (Dancing With the Stars) as TV host Corny Collins, Harvey Fierstein as Tracy’s mom Edna, Martin Short (Maya & Marty) as Tracy’s dad Wilbur, Sean Hayes (Will & Grace) as dress shop owner Mr. Pinky and Rosie O’Donnell (When We Rise) as a gym teacher.

  1. David says:

Fierstein and Short are too old to be portraying Tracy’s parents. And Jennifer Hudson is way too young to be Motormouth Maybelle.

    • Sal says:

Would you mind suggesting who you think should be alternatives?

      • Anne says:

Vivica Fox, Angela Basset, Tajara Henson, Queen Latifa, Alicia Keys, Lorraine Toussant, Loretta Devine, etc all would have been more appropriate casting choices than Hudson. (And yes I know Queen played her in the movie)

  2. W says:

Grande should have been Amber. She has too much spunk to pull off the nerd vibe needed for Penny.

  3. Jonathan Lighthill says:

Arguably Kristin Chenowith is one of the key castings. I didn’t see her in the trailer or her name. How bizarre.

    • Heather says:

I think it’s because she just joined the cast in LA last week. She was doing a one-woman show on Broadway until last Sunday and then she went straight to Hairspray. I hope we get some footage of her before the show, though!

      This looks great, I’m excited.

  4. James says:

My problem is that it looks just like the film. I hope they don’t copy it scene by scene.

  5. Fat Rosefed O’Donuts as a GYM teacher? Who the hell cast THIS show-Max Bialystock?
