The Goldbergs '90s Spinoff ABC Bryan Callen

The Goldbergs Getting a '90s Spinoff at ABC, With Bryan Callen's Gym Teacher

One decade of nostalgia isn’t enough for The Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg.

ABC is developing a ’90s-set spinoff of the hit ’80s comedy, our sister site Deadline is reporting, with Goldberg set to write the pilot script with The Goldbergs executive producer Marc Firek. (The Hollywood Reporter first had the news.)

The spinoff will reportedly center on high school gym teacher Rick Mellor, a recurring character on The Goldbergs; Bryan Callen, who plays Mellor, is attached to star in the new untitled series. (The premise: Mellor and another high school teacher team up to act as father figures to the school secretary’s three kids.)

The Goldbergs has been a solid ratings performer in ABC’s Wednesday night comedy block, currently in its fourth season; it was already sold into syndication back in June. And spinoffs seem to be the latest TV trend, with Monday’s news that CBS is developing a Big Bang Theory spinoff centered on a young Sheldon Cooper.

Would you watch a ’90s-set Goldbergs spinoff? Or should they just keep it totally rad in the ’80s? Hit the comments and make your voice heard.

Comments are monitored, so don’t go off topic, don’t frakkin’ curse and don’t bore us with how much your coworker’s sister-in-law makes per hour. Talk smart about TV!

  1. Joe Drizzler says:

This idea worked great when That 70s Show spun-off That 80s Show. Oh, wait…

    • Brian says:

That was just taking basically a completely unrelated show and slapping the title onto it. This is an actual spin-off starring a character from the show.

    • Dysturbed says:

Aside from the fact that this is different for the reason Brian mentioned, the past often shows what may happen, but not always what will….so we’ll see how this turns out if it becomes a series.

  2. Jiminy Johansen says:

    Just the Five of Us?

  3. JamesC says:

Fresh off the boat has this nicely covered already for me.

  4. Luis says:

Yeah, because That 80’s Show was such a good idea…..remember that? The That 70’s Show spinoff?? Yep, goood idea….idiots

    • Quinten says:

Cause this is the same thing? Lol That 80’s Show sucked but it had literally nothing to do with That 70’s Show. It wasn’t a true spinoff and shouldn’t be considered one. This is much different

  5. Brock Hard says:

    What a stupid premise.

  6. Jared says:

I love when the coach is on The Goldbergs so a spinoff makes perfect sense. I’d def be watching!

  7. I’m hoping that The Goldbergs will eventually move into The 90’s and not be stuck in the 80’s til the series finale.

  8. Ram510 says:

The gym teacher is my favorite secondary character so I’d watch the spinoff but not sure if it’s going to work. Plus wouldn’t it be weird that ABC would presumably have 2 90’s comedies?

  9. Brigid says:

Yeah I mean how ridiculous is spinning off a great comedy? It didn’t work when they spun off All in the Family with The Jeffersons or Cheers with Frasier! What’s wrong with these people?

    • Oliver Covington says:

the Jeffersons was a great spin off of All in the Family as was Maude and Good times.. three great shows… spin offs can be wonderful if done correctly The Jeffersons ran for 11 seasons i believe…

  10. Kosel says:

ABC already has Fresh Off the Boat covering 90’s nostalgia, so I don’t see a point in this.

  11. will horton says:

I would definitely watch the 90s spinoff!!! Theoldbergs are my favorite TV show.
